Public hearing on eBikes February 7th. MORE was asked to provide input into the policy a couple of years ago and has been involved throughout the process. You may sign-up to speak at the public hearing in advance or on site.

I am worried about dealing with throngs of high-speed "assisted" riders (+750W) zipping through the remote loops of Fountainhead in an hour, and the "slippery slopes" of some e-folks derestricting their speed (once you're being assisted, might as well ramp up the fun!) and of ubiquitous speedy electric vehicles hurting MTB access in the future. Disabled riders already have exemptions for motor-assistance under the ADA, and more exemptions could be added. For most riders I don't think there is an access problem, fundamentally. Rather, most e-bikers simply want to go faster. Almost every segment of FH can be climbed (or made easier) with low enough gearing. Recently popular 1x's can limit riders' options on steep climbs. (My 2011 Pivot M429 originally came with a 3x, now 2x, and can climb any non-chunky slope in the area.) LBSes might better serve a greater number of less-fit customers by economically matching their drivetrains to their intended riding destinations.

Mid Atlantic Off Road Enthusiasts - MORE, several comments asking if the org has a policy statement. Good question. What say you, please?

Haha wow is there a reason this is in lorton and not fairfax city? Driving there is impossible at rush hour. Also, e-bikes should not be allowed on mtb trails, especially with a speed of 20mph.

I can’t wait to ride my electric dirt bike up and down shockabilly

Any intel on why they they are going through this effort for nonenforceable guidance rather than something with teeth?

There's just no evidence that pedal-assist bikes have any more impact than any other user.

I, too, would be interested in hearing MORE's position on e-bikes, reflecting their input to Fairfax and NOVA Parks over the last couple of years. The proposed amendment [www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/park-news/2019/z-ir003] does not mention e-bike Classes (1, 2 and up): "Draft guidelines define e-bikes as a 'wheeled vehicle equipped with (i) pedals that allow propulsion by human power and ii) an electric motor with an input of no more than 750 watts that reduces the pedal effort required of the rider. This applies to both road and mountain style (e/MTB) e-bikes.' These use guidelines will be recommendations only and will not be enforceable by law." 750W will more than supplement a weaker rider. (And perhaps higher wattage won't be labeled...) So as long as your vehicle has pedally stubs that allow (but do not require) human propulsion, you can let 'er rip. Apparently there would be no legal enforcement anyway.

Or this guy youtu.be/StqAy7TWTqs

What is the MORE position?

Everyone (and me) is a laptop expert, but weighing-in: an E-bike (powerful or puny) is a motorized/partially motorized vehicle. We have enough problems with access and image. I would vote "keep them off all trails" (knowing nobody really cares what I say), just keeping with the hiking, horsing, pedaling right-of-way and access is going to be enough work to sustain❤️🚵‍♀️🚴‍♂️

Bad idea. They will harm the trails over time

If you are worried bout trails being messed up, please shame all the shameless trailslayers out there. Thousands irresponsible regular non ebikers f*** up the trails for 1 ebikers I bet. Why don't anyone do anything about those folks?

Is there a MORE policy document on this that you can provide us?

The worst is the folks on full throttle electric bikes not pedal assisted and enforcing it. It's coming and I have a feeling there is no stopping it. No one out policing.

I will keep riding my tin lizard, at least until I can save some cash for the plastic lizard.

Any designs anywhere? Would be awesome to have some stuff around here where you can get into a rhythm. To much “uppy downy” back and forth. Huge leg burning climbs as high as you can possibly go followed by long blistering descents with tons of rollable jumps one after the other with lots of flow and berms is what this area sorely needs. I love fountainhead but it’s like the tardis. You leave the parking lot, climb, climb climb....climb and you are back at the parking lot. There is no fun payoff.
