MD-Cabin John Stream Valley Trail

Cabin John Trail
Bethesda-Rockville, MD

Trail Discussion Here

Trail Liaison: Rob Lowe, CabinJohn@more-mtb.org
Spring 2010 Trailwork Days: Sunday, April 18

Description:

The Cabin John trail runs roughly 10 miles North-South, from Cabin John on the Potomac River to Montrose Road & I-270 in Rockville. The southernmost 2 miles (from the Potomac to where it crosses under the Beltway - near Seven Locks Road) is not ridable and is not open to bikes. It is a lovely stream valley trail, giving a strong sense of being alone in nature; this trail is located near major highways but still offers an unexpected sense of solitude and natural beauty. Residential neighborhoods are nearby, but generally not visible. Basically an out-and-back ride, with several options for loops as the trail enters Cabin John Regional Park just North of Democracy Boulevard. Much of the trail is along side the creek, which can make for a lot of mud after rain. The trail includes rocky sections, and areas full of Mountain Laurel that blooms in June. There are several small stream crossings, and towards the northern end, the trail crosses the Cabin John creek. The entire trail is blazed with a sky-blue blaze.

Notes from other riders: Since the trail is in an urban area, users must be careful when crossing roads as they carry high volumes of traffic. A portion of the trail traverses Cabin John Regional Park.

Directions

From The South: Take the Beltway to River Road West (towards Potomac). Take first left onto Seven Locks Road. The gravel lot is 1/2 mile down on your left. If you go under the Beltway (a highway overpass) you have gone too far.

From the North: Take I-270 to Montrose Road West. Take first left onto Seven Locks Road. Take first left onto Goya Drive. Go to the end of Goya Drive. The trail starts just ahead of you. You can also access the trail at several places in Cabin John Regional Park, at 7777 Democracy Boulevard, west of the interchange with the western I-270 spur.
