On Columbus Day, I went and managed to fracture my collarbone while I was riding at Accotink. (God bless the Inova Fairfax ER.) Looking ahead, I was considering getting some type of the shirt/chest protectors to give me a little protection so I can ride again with the added protection while I let the bones do their healing thing. I really want something that offers strong/good shoulder protection - Anyone have any suggestions? The lighter the better, I'd like to avoid the DH body suits that look like something an astronaut should wear.

I rode with a guy named Dave a few weeks ago. I don't remember what he was wearing, but it seemed to have pretty good coverage and was pretty light weight.

Most things in the body armor department are going to be DH or Freeride inspired.

I ride with 661 Race knee and shin guards from time to time. Right now I've got a fracture in my left patella and so I ride with that on my left leg. I've got another 6 weeks of doing that before I am allowed to take it off.

The 661 Race pads come in both knee/shin and also elbow/forearm models. They are light weight and breathe pretty well. This time of year they are dang comfy on the trails.

The only problem with it is that I had to extend the straps a little to accomodate my well developed and very manly calf muscles. It took 20 minutes, a little webbing and a sewing machine.

I know that isn't a complete answer to your question, but that may help a little.

Good luck.

An easy way to extend the velcro straps is get some of the double sided velcro (hook on one side, loop on the other) and use them as extensions. Just cut them down to size and slap them between the short straps.

No girly-man sewing from this massive-calves manly-muscle-man. :D

I started with that, but I didn't like the way it felt against the girly man skin on my manly man calves.

I have no problems doing girly man sewing. I've done it for years and found it a helpful skill.

Later folks. I need to get back to my knitting. ;)
