Very affordable too. I might think about getting one for next season :)

I found this inexpensive one but I'm still looking for the best record time, battery life, optics, etc.

The new VholdR from Twenty20 is fully self contained, gets 50 min per GB on a mini SD card, 30fps; it is in limited production now. It has a price to go with the technology - $350! Most of what I'm finding is in the $300-500 range. At least with this one I don't need to buy a mini DVR to go with the camera! I'm still researching this so I will check back to see what anyone else has found.

My only problem is that there appears to be no focus control (auto or otherwise) meaning they use a fixed lens at a small aperture to achieve "infinite" focus. That generally means that you won't very crisp images within a few feet of the camera and it requires a lot of light to be effective since there isn't much getting into the camera.
It might be nice in certain situations (open desert riding, beach, etc.) but any in and out of sunlight on narrow singletrack is going to reek havoc with the image.
Nice concept though.

Peter Fagerlin makes some awesome videos and has a great "how to" section on his website. As mentioned above, you get what you pay for. You can get videos like the ones on the website, but it is expensive, otherwise videos will be limited to the somewhat grainy effect of most cameras, including lipstick cams.

PS - his vids from fruita and moab are awesome, well worth watching, and have been at least aprtially responsible for my trip to fruita and moab next week.

Well, there's always your cellphone. I took these good quality videos with my Samsung SYNC (A707) tucked into the pocket of my shoulder strap of my waterpack. Keep in mind they were taken when I sucked a lot more than I do now.

Obviously based on the OP, budget was considered with the product listed. However, there are options currently, granted they start at about $700 and go up from there, which is alot of money for something that could easily be destroyed in a crash. There are a couple of HD camcorders out now, that are extremely small, starting at 720p all the way up to 1080i (I have not seen any for 1080p yet). Add to that a custom made case to protect it (you will probably have to make it yourself as the camcorders are not exactly designed for the intended use here), and you can have a really nice, HD quality, small and light camcorder for your riding video pleasures... just don't hit a tree :)

Hmmm... and no MAC support either. Windows only.
2 thumbs down.

I have a Samsung helmet cam (210xl model or something). It works great. It comes with everything you need for video. Punga used it in WV. Jonathan used it for Moab. MattyD rocked it at 24hrs of Vail Lake in CA. Kent almost crashed into another campsite at 24hrs of Conyers. I have a lot of stuff following people on Lewis and Clarke and Eric Roman.
I think I got mine for around $400. It works with Mac. You just have to download the correct codex. I'm no good at video editing or else you'd see a ton of stuff from me...

Umm.. does that come with person to type in the contents of the codex into code so that your computer can read it :) or do you mean codecs :) Sorry.. had to..
Codex - A codex (Latin for block of wood, book; plural codices) is a book in the format used for modern books, with separate pages normally bound together and given a cover. It was a Roman invention that replaced the scroll, which was the first form of book in all Eurasian cultures.

Very affordable too. I might think about getting one for next season :)Cnet says this camera's images basically suck, but it's "cool" factor is high, so people seem to buy it. It got points for being waterproof and having a good lens.

I could see where it's convenience could be a real boon.

Yes I've seen his stuff, great quality videos and awesome locations.
Yeah my point was simply to share a decent (seeming) budget camera for those of us who cant spend big $$ at the moment :)

I was thinking of getting a helmet cam and wouldn't you know it, everyone's thinking of getting one!
Here's a hack on turning a CVS "disposable" cam into a helmet cam.
http://blog.mauronic.com/?p=5
Aerodynamic as a brick but ~$40 (with mount)
Also check out issue #7 of Make Magazine for a similar discussion (except they put theirs inside a rocket). Warning: Soldering required for these.
Here's Helmet Cam Central (should have known, right?) on the ATC 2000:
http://helmetcameracentral.com/2006/11/06/oregon-scientific-atc2k-atc-2000-helmet-camera/
Their bottom line (note, I don't have one):
- It's inexpensive!
- Get the right SD card
- Get the right mount
- Get the right batteries
