The Giles Run Trail, a single-track trail at Laurel Hill park in southern Fairfax County, is due to open in October. It will be the first 1.5 miles of a planned 10 miles of single-track connected by the Cross County Trail. Laurel Hill is a new Fairfax County Park Authority park located at the old Lorton prison property. In 2006 REI funded a grant to MORE for a conceptual trails plan for the Laurel Hill property.
The plan was developed by IMBA Trail Solutions and accepted by Fairfax County Park Authority in the spring of 07. IMBA Trail Solutions was then hired by Fairfax County to flag and start developing the single-track trails. The new trail will start in the shadow of the old maximum security facility at the 8400 Lorton rd trailhead. It loops around the Giles run stream valley and connects with the CCT while providing access to the fishing pier and between the front and back 9 of the planned disc golf course.
Volunteer Day: Meet at 9:30 am at the trailhead.
Bring: As usual, water, gloves and sturdy shoes. MORE will provide tools, Clif bars, and ice-cold Gatorade.
Call Chris at 540-607-6821 if you have trouble finding everyone.
To get there: from I-95 take exit 163 (Lorton Road) and head west. There is a park entrance off of Lorton Road about 500’ after the Shell station on the right, before the creek. Go up the hill, pass the pond on the left and stay to your left. There’s a parking lot on the left in front of the old prison. Follow the signs to the trail crew.
