Does anyone have any experience with Shimano's spd/platform pedals such as the PD-M424? Do any other companies make a double sided clipless platform similar to it?
I want a platform for store runs and noodling around town, but clipless for offroad use. I don't want to be in the position of constantly switching pedals.

I had some M545s on my hardtail for a few years (commuter during the week, trail on the weekends). They work fine for either, but the review can be summarized as: heavy. Other than that, nothing at all bad to say about them.
If you're not wearing dress/leather soled shoes, it's surprisingly easy to comfortably get around on your clipless pedals. Well, for me anyway. If I'm just heading to a bar down the street or heading over to the grocery store, I'm usually in sandles/trainers on my speedplay zeros (which are pretty tiny, but you just kinda hook in . . .).

There are also two levels down from the 647 that are okay, since the 647 is kind of over priced.
If you are on a budget the Performance brand "Campus" pedal is okay as long as you don't leave it sitting around dirty and instead actually clean it when it's covered with mud. Left dirty it tends to get hard to work faster than the Shimano version.

I used them for a while and they drove me crazy on the trails - always flipping the pedal for the SPD side to land upright. It was madness.

Yeah, I'd rather avoid the campus pedals for the same reason. I checked out the 424s in person yesterday. They seem ok, especially for the price.

I switched from some standard sized SPD's to the 545's and found I hit more rocks with them in the beginning but they were fine once I got used to them.
You should also consider the Crank Brothers Mallet pedals. I switched to egg beaters from spd's and will never go back.
