Before I spend money, I'd like to try a couple things. Maybe you guys have this stuff sitting around idle...

Platform pedals. I want to try a set on my mtb and see if they "work" for me. I haven't owned a set in over a decade. I get tired having to pedal on tiny SPDs just to ride my bike(s) to the store and sometimes I'd like to wear street shoes in case I see a neat shop or something while I'm noodling around town. But, I'd also like to try them offroad...

700x27-30c road tire. I want fatter tires for my bike, but I have very little clearance between the rear brake bridge and my current tire. I went from a 23c to a 25c without any problems, I'd like to see how fat I can go before I start rubbing. Do any of you have an old worn out 700c tire I can try? It can be a scraggly old commuter tire. All I'm going to do is put it on the bike and ride it around the block at most.

Thanks,
Chris

I can help you out with both. I have a set of Panaracer Pasela 28mm tires you can borrow, and I have a set of Atomlab Aircorp flats you can try out also.

For the platforms, shoes make as big a difference as the pedals. Skate shoes work very well because they have flat sticky soles.

If you have an old skateboard, you can try this (http://bikecentric.blogspot.com/2007/07/diy-platform-pedal-mod.html).
