You only really need a tail light if your going to be out on the roads, but yes, any cheap taillight should work, just as long as its bright enough for cars to see, and distinguish it from other light pollution to realize its a cyclist.

Try to get the most annoying, blinky tail light you can to annoy the &%$* out of the rider behind you - this is particulary encouraged for ride leaders :D

Battery questions...
I have two old 6v 10w halogen systems (one NiteRider TrailRat2 and one Performance ViewPoint). I'd like to build new battery packs for them.
Would I gain anything by going with lithium-ion packs over NiMH? More life? Less weight? I know they cost a bit more.
6V or 7.2V replacement? I know the 7.2 will burn through bulbs faster, but bulbs are cheap. How much more light will that give me?
Has anybody rebuilt a battery pack re-using the NiteRider housing? I guess that would limit me to NiMH, but might be a fun mini-project.

I've got a couple of light systems that I really like but they're "old" and the NiCD cells don't hold a charge. I called the mfr- $100 for a new battery pack (in a water bottle). I cut one open and it's pretty straight forward as far as the electrical, so someday I'm going to get new cells and give it a go, for 3 packs and a creative housing for the headlamp. The setup was 11 cells 1.2v each for 13.2v total on a 12v bulb. I never had a blown bulb on either system (bike and helmet mount). I'm keeping my eye out for a source for 1.2v c-size NiCD cells.
I seriously considered going with NiMh or LIon, but abandoned that idea when I determined I would need a new charger for those types. Also, for as little as I have used the lights, the NiCD packs would work just fine anyway.
I've also got a NiteRider Digital Head Trip that is several years old but never used because I liked my older lights so much. I'd like to send it off to anyone interested for $80.
