I rode FH today in the blistering heat. Stoopid.

Anyways. I skipped a great deal of the trail using all the bypasses, but on the way back from the picnic table there are some trees which need clearing from the trail.

The first I saw was just past the first bridge heading out after the picnic tables. It was about an 8" trunk suspended about 8-10" above the trail. Nice red blaze painted on it. Itserved it's mission well.

About 5-10 minutes further down from that same spot are 2 back to back trees not all the way down hanging low over the trail requiring ducking to ride through.

There might be more in the loops further back, but I was SERIOUSLY overheating and skipped most of the trail.

Got out there again today and found one leaner that requires dismounting to crawl under at mile 2.66 according to my computer. It is just off the service road not too far after the picnic tables on the way in. The other trees I saw before are at mile 6.2 and mile 6.4 or so according to my computer. Place took a beating in that last storm.

Just thought the mile mark might help locate them. Thanks again for the great trail day you ran last week!

Thanks for the update Mr. Tuba. Time to try towing a chain saw in our new Bob Trailer.

In the future we will have all trees fall before the workday. ~tom

Tom,
Is anyone allowed to clear the trail as needed, or does it have to be approved, etc?

Thanks

I've often come across a downed tree or limbs and thought "If I had a saw..." IMHO, it's wise to clear debris (branches, limbs, trees...) when safety is a concern - such as a limb or branch across a 'blind' turn or at the bottom of a fast descent. The other obvious situation would be to move an obstacle if trail users start bypassing or widening the original trail.

But we need to be sensitive to park/property owners because "unauthorized" maintenance might be frowned upon. I guess the real solution is to notify the trail liason and to participate in trail maintenance days to learn the MORE best management practice.

Is there a MORE maintenance guide?

I saw that one tree was 8" in diameter from the post. What about the others? Can anyone provide a few size details? I can remove 8-12" diameter stuff with the ax and hand saw, but larger than that and I need to take my chainsaw... and then I need a "spotter" to stop any traffic and make sure I am in one piece (It's a NFS safety requirement and common sense). Does anyone have more info?

Thanks,

Eric

As I recall, of all the trees down right now, none are very large and almost all (but 1 I think) are down and laying across the trail, I believe only 1 is probably about 10-12" but is already down as well. I didn't dismount for any trees this past week or today. Guess I just rode around or over them.

Replied to other thread as well.

As you suspect, it must be approved, etc. if you are using tools (but thanks for asking) ~tom
