9/08/04 >> Hey, anyone know if it's possible to adapt a roof rack on a 98' Jeep G. Cheeroke to work with a Thule fork mounted roof tray. The crossbars on the Jeep are bowed (slightly) and flat. Is there an adapter that will work with the original crossbars on the Jeep? I've seen other people with bike racks on their (factory) roof racks. Where do you get these (adapters) at?

Go to Thule (or Yakima or Sportsrack, etc, I would assume) website and they have a fit guide. You can put in your car make, year and model and they will tell you what kind of racks you can use. They have both cross bars and attachments that will fit on a factory rack. www.thule.com.

Hey there BikerRob--

I may have the solution! As previously mentioned here in the forum, there are adapters for attaching to factory racks. I've got a set of "fat mouths", which are Thule's answer to your problem. These attach to your factory rack securely, and allow you to mount various Thule accessories (i.e. bike trays, ski/snowboard racks, etc.).

Since I got a new car last year, I use a different set up, so no longer need them. The fat mouths were lightly used (~1 or 2 ski seasons); in excellent condition (in box w/instructions).

If you're interested, I'll give you a fair price. (If desired, we could even arrange to meet at Wakefield or somewhere, you could try them to make sure they fit; I'm fairly sure they're a universal fit for factory racks). Let me know; either post a reply (I'll get an auto-email) &/or a PM here.

Best,

10/8/04 >> Brad, thanks for the info. Right now I'm in the process of re-thinking the strategy that I'm going to use for the Jeep. I'm thinking now of a hitch mounted rack so I can use the roof for a cargo carrier or something else ( like a kayak ). What I'd really like to get (for camping) is a small enclosed trailer but at the time I can't afford it. Right now I'll probably be going with the cargo carrier and bike hitch rack. My goal is to keep the interior as open as possible so as not to interfere with the acoustics of the stereo...I do like my tunes.. :D
