Any recommendations on a higher volume rear tire that actually grips AND rolls (relatively spkg)?
Specialized Enduro 2.2 works very well in Frederick, but rolls like a slug everywhere else. MutanoRaptor 2.4s are perfect for Monkey County, but just don't grip or corner very well on rocks.
Grip/corner/brake/roll, but have NO volume:
Continental Slash 2.3
Panaracer Cinder 2.25
Kenda Kinetic 2.35
Maxxis Ignitors
How about Conti Digga 2.5 (always undersized) or the Hutchinson Baracuda 2.3 MRC medium? Maxxis Advantage? Don't want another Specialized rear tire.

I've been pretty happy with the WTB Exiwolf 2.3 as an all-around tire for around here.
Although if you thought the kinetics 2.35 were too small, you won't like the Exiwolfs either (they are similar in size).

I'm going to give the 2.35 small blocks a try (ordered them tonight), shooting for similar performance goals....
The tread design appears similar to the Nevegals, although much lighter and smaller (i.e. faster rolling).
I'm not sure those have the kind of volume you're looking for though given its more of a purposed xc tire....then again, 2.35.......

WTB Weirwolf 2.5 or 2.3....better the 2.5 for volume

If you hurry you can get a Kenda Kinetics 2.6" for only 9 bucks at Jenson. For that price you can't pass up the chance to try it.

Maxxis High Roller 2.35 works well for me.
don't forget to answer that email about about that thing I sent you.
To derail the thread even further, I saw that drummer Max Roach passed on. Bummer.

Hm.. Small Block 8 looks a little shallow for me. Weirwolves will probably be comparable to the Specialized Enduro with real' widely spaced center knobs and slow slow slow roll. Those Kinetic 2.6s have been on sale for a while.. not a popular size, hence blowing out. Performance has 'em too. Honestly, I'm not even sure a 2.6 would fit inside my stays. (ps: Tuba, only reason I don't want another Spec'd rear is cause i've had trouble with the sidewalls ripping). The shop has a HighRoller, maybe I'll give that a look-- that a pretty tall tire? (ps: P!, very int'd- will reply!) Max was a beast, RIP.

Brian I have a Maxxis Ingnitor 2.35 you can try if you want? It was swag at a event. I have never tried them so I know nothing about how they perform.

I was running the Cinder 2.25 front and rear on my hard tail. They were everything I liked about the FireXC but with stronger knobs on the sides. They corner well, aren't painfully slow, but are kind of weighty. Bottom line, I think they do a great job and have tons of traction up, down, and in turns.

Brian.. yea.. I tried running the Cinder 2.25 and loved all those same characteristics.. except it's not a big enough tire for me. I'm running it on a ht, too..as a REAR.. and I ride seated over a lot of rocks.. so I want MORE AIR than what the Cinder offers. Dave, I've sized up the Ignitors & I think they're gonna be too short as well..

A friend linked me to this Tire site which is gonna be QUITE helpful. http://www.mtbtires.com/specs/index.html

Sorry, I misread your message. I thought you were looking at those tires. Panaracer makes a 2.3 Fire DH. I've never ridden one, but I imagine it's a lot like the Cinder. 2.3 might still be too small.

Ya might want to take a look at either a dual sidewall or UST. The UST would be a little bit heavier but no more flats with Stans. The Dual sidewall would be a good deal heavier, but you could beat the hell out of it in the Shed on downhills with no worries.
I thought the 2.6" might be too big. Heck my 2.4" rear Specialized Enduro Pro UST tire barely clears my chainline.
BTW if you do find a good big tire replacement, please fill us in. I prefer fat tires also and am pretty much after the same characteristics you are.

http://www.panaracer.com/mtb.phpNo worries. Yea, those FIRE DHs are super hot.. deep tread.. Looks like a city skyline! I have a feeling the tread's gonna be TOO deep on those, tho... although according to the MTBtire site, they're comparable in size to the Enduro 2.2 . Tuba, word.

Its a 2.4, and is supposed to run a bit big. Roughly the same tread as the FireXC, which is a very good all around tire for this area.

I think the tricky thing is that I, like many of you, switch back and forth from Frederick to Montgomery County. And finding a tire that work well in each area is tough. Really, the mutanos are good, but just don't bite enough up here.

What about Conti Vertical Pro 2.35? Take a look at that one.
I got a spare if you want to test one.

I ran Conti Verticals about a year ago and loved them.. for the first 100 miles.. then the Endless Edge wore off and I was noodles all over. Claimed 2.3, more like 2.1 tho, really.

Very true about the sizing. My edge has started to wear as well. I moved to the Diesel, and If you liked the Vert., then you will like the Diesel 2.5. More like a 2.35.

I ran them two years ago and had the same situation. Once they wear down, I got what felt like speed wobble on some softer surfaces at higher speeds. I didn't feel safe on them after six months and switched out to IRCs.

the Diesel 2.5. More like a 2.35.How tall is that thing off your rim? (And what rim is it?) Would you say that thing rolls ok? I also like the Digga (practically a 2.5 version of the Slash-- which I rode and really liked, just too small). The Hutchinson Baracuda 2.3 also looks like it could work. Rolls smoothly and has good size.

Brian,
If you want it, I have got a 2.3 Weirwolf that is yours for the taking. I used it for a few months before going tubeless, and it had plenty of bite left. Just let me know and we can work out a time for you to get it.

It sits somewhat high on the rim, which is a Single "run" track. Similar profile to the way a Vertical sits, with more sidewall, of course.
I think it rolls fine. I like the tread pattern and it withstood a recent Snowshoe trip. Snowshoe was the driest I have seen it, however, I still was impressed but not as much I would want to be. Gotta try it in more wet conditions. But others may like it.
I am going to get a Digga soon, or maybe a WTB Dissent... have not decided.
