I've been biking Accotink and Wakefield pretty much every day for the past month now (except rainy days, of course), and I'm trying to figure out the different color arrows and signs. From what I can gather, yellow arrows seem to have lots of technical challenges and the reds seem to be fairly flat, with orange being in between. Is that right?

Also, I follow the direction the arrow points, but come across riders going opposite every so often. I'm assuming etiquette dictates they are going the wrong way, but there is no way to enforce it. Is a gentle verbal reminder appropriate? Or is it pretty much a free for all?

Thanks!

Thanks! Man, I can't believe I committed the n00b sin of not doing a proper search... :)

Also, can you explain the colors of the arrows?

Well, *I* can't explain the arrows, but maybe myotherbrother or someone else can....

Anyway, maybe you have a life and don't *yet* waste it all day flipping between windows on your computer paying way too much attention to the MORE forum.

Welcome here to MORE! :)

Well, I finally answered my own question.

It would seem that the yellow arrows denote the north Wakefield trail system, the orange for the middle section, and the blue arrows (which I just discovered yesterday) for the south. :) By the way, the blue section is awesome (and I didn't see a single other rider on the whole blue network between 530pm and 630pm).

The yellow arrows are part of the race course, which happens to be in the north part of the park. The arrows are directional only for the races, otherwise, it's a free-for-all out there :p

There are more sections in the north (rollers, berms and switchbacks in the field which all make up collectively Phase 2 and 3). No yellow arrows out there, but all located in the north section of the park.

Your general descriptions of the blazes and their areas are correct, just not set in stone.

Finally... clarity! :D

OK - It took me awhile but this morning I asked for an official definition of the blazing from the Park.

Here's the answer:

"We have three color coded trails; The blue trail is in the bowl and is fairly technical and up and down hill; the orange trail is the creek trail that is flat along the stream valley edge of the creek; and the yellow trail is a combination that also includes hills, technical challenges and some flat areas."

(The yellow trail mostly follows what is considered the race course).

The Park also wanted me to convey that the RED blazes are reserved for the CCT and is uniform across all of their properties and that the description above for the other colors (Blue, Orange and Yellow) are specific to Wakefield and may not match blazes found at on other FCPA properties.

I hope this helps!

PS Wait till Phase IV. A new color blaze will probably be added!!!

I had been riding Wakefield for months before I even realized there was a blue section. When I found it last week, it was like discovering a lost city! It was so cool to find something new in a place so familiar.

So tell us about this Phase IV??? When, where, details...!!! :D

There are a couple of plans and idea's for Phase IV. The SOW still needs to be written and finalized. Here's a preview on few things mentioned:

Currently called the Deer Trail. At the base of Phase I before the cinder. Lots and lots of armoring.

The Bowl - Have you seen all of those orange flags? Gonna be some reroutes and a skills trail added.

Trail Solutions had some other idea's but 10K only goes so far.

Ask me again in about 6 months.................

That sounds really cool. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help or contribute.

What we need is a really good Wakefield map :)

The thing is, the rides happen to be on the same day my wife has the car, so I ride down (from Oakton, about 5 miles), get there at 6... and since the rides usually start at 630, my energy is already half spent...plus I need to hit the road by 730pm before it gets too dark to ride home.

I know. Complicated. :)

I WILL be there for a ride one day next week. Which day, I don't know.

Are there colored arrows at Lake Accotink, or is that limited to Wakefield?
