Looks like I'm a day late, but I was up at Schaeffer on Friday and the trails, overall, were in great condition - the corn has really gotten tall! Hope you were able to get out there and enjoy yourself!

BTW, whose idea was it to get rid of the port-o-john? Oh well...

Here is some information on Schaeffer farms that came out of the Friends of Seneca meeting last night. It is too bad that we might have vandals in our community.

Report from last nite's mtg:

Several things happened in June. First the donation box at Schaeffer was completely destroyed by thieves (box cost c. $300; unknown amt stolen fm box). Second, someone tipped over the Schaeffer portajohn. Third someone put drink cans in the portajohn at the disk golf course, then the maintenance guy from Gene's Johns dumped the cans (covered with icky blue goo from the john) on ground next to portajohn, saying we don't do trash.
Ranger Powell called Gene's to protest dumping on ground, got same response from Gene. So Gene's contract was cancelled.

Park Mgr Walt Brown mentioned that a portajohn on WSSC property near his house gets tipped c. 3X/week [few cows around here to tip anymore, so...]

Bill Larson, Ch of Seneca Friends, is committed to restoring service at Schaeffer, will investigate other providers, techniques for preventing tipping such as build small enclosure. I mentioned Scud's offer to contribute to cost, which he appreciated.

Further news as it breaks...

Super. People really need to find something better to do with their time. More proof that parents really need to beat their kids more often - if only as preventative maintenance.

Thanks for the info, though!

On a constructive note, I would also be willing to contribute to the re-establishment of the can.

Craig, MORE has offered to contribute to the rental of a new porta-john. Stay tuned.

Excellent! I guess I'll add a camp shovel and toilet paper to my repair kit ;)

God forbid he place the cans in the nearest garbage receptacle... Talk about deserving to lose a contract!

I rode Schaeffer today from about 10-2. I was very concerned so that if it were too wet, that I didn't damage the trails. It turned out to not be that wet. There were a few puddles. Early on, it was damp enough that it was a bit slippery. But it dried out enough that that didn't seem to be a problem.

I noticed there was one tire mark in one stretch and wondered if maybe someone got caught during the rain yesterday. But overall, it wasn't too bad and my riding partner didn't seem to leave any marks.

Unfortunately, I noticed a big, black cloud in that vicinity around 4 pm or so today. If it wasn't any more rain than occurred last night, it probably won't screw up tomorrow's MORE casual ride. But there is a second, bad cloud headed that way on the doppler radar.

Hate to Rain (pun intended) on the ride for tomorrow
but I'd expect it to be really we since between both last night and tonight's rain the noaa site says that about
2.5 to 3 inches of rain fell there!!
I'd say it will need to dry out.

I'm not too pleased with what the sky's been doing the last two days. And I'm not saying that we *should* ride tomorrow. But on the other hand, your estimate of rainfall is highly exaggerated. Dulles (close as the crow flies--long to drive) reports 0.79" for the last two days' rain. The doppler radar shows no more rain headed our way. Perhaps a new patch of rain will develop tonight, but it doesn't look that way.

Again, I'm not saying the trails definitely will be OK. But I also don't think it's a cut and dried (there ought to be a pun in there somewhere) case of no riding tomorrow. It might be something where the ride could be postponed until the early afternoon and a few hours of no rain and warmer temps could make it quite rideable.

Several things happened in June. First the donation box at Schaeffer was completely destroyed by thieves (box cost c. $300; unknown amt stolen fm box).

:( I was wondering what happened to the donation box. I went riding there a couple weekends ago (first time this year because of all the wet weather) and went to put a fiver in the box... but no box?? I don't know if the donation box was bringing in much, but I did like being able to donate occassionally to my favorite trail in the area (not that it's been rideable all that much the last two seasons).

Are there any plans to replace the donation box?

A few weeks ago vandals stole the donation Box. Plans are in place to replace box. Stay tuned.

How's Schaeffer looking for the 1st? I've been out of town for a few days, so I don't know what the weather's been like...

Went last night just before sunset... The trails were in great shape. Minimal puddles. I didn't ride down to the low areas near the stream, however. The area got a brief shower around lunch today. Don't expect it did much to the trails. I'm going to head out there shortly for another ride.

Rode Sunday 8/22, and the trails were in overall good condition. A few muddy spots, nothing serious, in the typical areas. A couple new logpiles, one of which I bent a rotor on :( Be careful diving through the tall weeds... makes for completely blind, narrow turns. If the rain continues to hold off, this week/weekend should be KILLER! Yar!
