View Full Version : Anyone fed up with their juicy brakes?

I've about had it with my Juicy 7s. I've bled the front brake about 3 times in the past year. The rear brake, oh about 4 times with a complete lever overhaul today. There's also a sticky piston that I can't seem to get moving which explains why my rear brake always like to rub. As I'm trying to move the piston in and out and lube it I hear a 'hissssss'. Oops, the piston went out too far, have to bleed again. It's still sticking. Holy schnikes...I never had to touch my cheapo hayes that came on my old Sugar 3.
Grumble, grumble...

Oh, forgot to mention the shoddy engineering on the OEM rotors and the awful noise they created.

ive only owned mine for a year now but i havnt had any problems. If it rubs i stick a box wrench in there and push it back in and that has seemed to work for me. hope i dont run into the same problems!

I have had issues with Hayes and have read people complaining that Magura breaks are the biggest pain in the world to work on, so what does that leave? Hope and Shimano? I need to buy a light pair and was thinking about the Hope Mono or one of their other models. Any recommendations out there?

My second choice was the just dissed model, but I also get really annoyed when I have to redo the breaks two or three times in 4 months.

Those good old Avid mechanicals still work. :)

Yea, but when the Juicy’s work, they feel so nice.

Personally, I have not had any problems (that Where not my fault) but I have only had my Juicy 7’s for a couple of months. They where super easy to install, and I love the control I have with them compared to my mechanicals. I could never get my mechanicals to feel that good

I agree. They worked flawlessly for a while, only recently have I had problems that were not solved by a bleed. They feel good today, but I've had them go out on me several times at the shed - not fun. I have a caliper rebuild kit coming from speedgoat. I hope that a new o-ring will solve the sticky piston issue. I'm a pro at bleeding these things. Too bad the o-rings on the bleed syringes like to shred too!

Not to sound like a commercial but I am shocked~
I have had them for one year~~ zero maintenance zero issues..
They have been through multiple 24hrs races, MANY miles of training, GW forest, FH, Wkfield, - I have not bled them once or even changed the pads. Pads are still in great shape and they still break better then the first week I had them (first week they needed to breakin and were a bit noisy!) I am not sure how much heavier they are compaired to the Juicy's but everyone I ride w. who has the juicy's seems have complained about them one time or another.

I'm not sure if it is because of my weight that I dont need as much stopping power and this would be less hard on them or what!? Or if they actually have an awesome product that can be used and abused by anyone?!? The Hayes 9's have worked amazing tho! ( I weigh 135lbs!)

Heh. I wouldn't worry. Sram does have good customer service. When I had the warbling/garbling/gobbledegook sound from my rotors, they quickly replaced them with the round ones. I'm out of warranty for my brakes now and they don't cover seals and the like, which is the problem I'm having. ie sticky piston, internal bypass in the master cylinder.

Never used them myself though.

Shannon uses Magura Martas; A little finicky but not TOO bad. She doesn't do an outrageous amount of miles per year, but they've only needed to be bled twice in three/four years or so.

My old 4-pot shimano XT brakes are absolutely bombproof. I've been running one set since 2002 on which the front has _never_ needed to be re-bled. I re-bled the rear when I swapped them between bikes because the hose was too short.

All I need to do for these is replace the pads every 1000 miles or so.

A friend of mine has Hayes that he's done basically nothing to as well. Personally I can't stand the feel of the Hayes, but they seem to be low maintenance.

I have had my Hope minis for 4 years and have never had to bleed them. I am on my 3rd set of pads. In spite of that, I have Avid mechs on my other 2 MTBs and they are the best choice for me. If I buy another bike it will have the mechs on them.

I too have heard good things about Formula's brakes. Only thing is the cost. About $200 for the caliper and lever and another $40 (or so) for the rotor and IS adapter. For whatever reason they sell the brake and rotor separately. At this point I'm not ready to make that leap unless I can't get my Juicys back to operational status. Caliper rebuild whenever the rebuild kit arrives. For what it's worth the front brake has been pretty flawless besides need for frequent bleeds.
