Anybody know of a good LBS in the Chantilly, VA, area?

We've just moved our office here from Ffx City, and my boss is looking for a decent rig for his 10/11 year old daughter.

Trailvictim? Squirrel Girl? Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Dave

Well....

Now I make the drive to the Bike Lane. No, it's NOT close to Chantilly. But it's "on the way" to Fountainhead and Wakefield.

There's A-1 in Herndon. There used to be a place at the intersection of 28 and 29. I bought a saddle there once a longggg time ago. On rare occasions I'll use Performance in Reston.

There's a bike shop in the "Clock Tower" shopping center close to Ned Devine's off of Centerville Rd. Don't know the name. And there's a Performance in Reston.

That's the A1 that SG mentioned.

I'm actually surprised nobody has opened a shop out South Riding way - with all the new development, there should be a market.

Of the 2, A1 is closer in Herndon than TBL in Burke, to where we are near 28 & 50.

Thanks for the intel, y'all.
I'll pass it on.

Be on your toes in A1. I've been in there a few times and get an unprofessional reception every time. They guys working there are always more concerned with talking to one another than customers.

Pedal Shop in Ashburn's not too much of a drive from Chantilly

And if you're heading up to Ashburn, there is a Spokes up there too.

conversely,
there is a shop on 29 just east of 28 in centreville. BP cycles or the likes.

Washington bike center is at the eastern end o' chantilly near fairlakes and stringfellow. I'd aim towards washington bikes over A-1.

Washington bikes is the place that told me they didn't carry disk wheels because they thought disk brakes were a fad

Dead serious. I have not been back in there since.

Yeah, I went to Washington Bikes when I was first getting interested in biking on a more serious level, but they didn't really impress me. Kind of the opposite of Vecsus' experience at A-1, the owner wouldn't stop trailing me. I was trying to browse, and he tailed me the whole time and it made me nervous. Other times I'd been there, and I was left alone a little more. But somehow I just didn't bond with those guys.

There's an A-1 in Manassas, too. They've got an employee there, Chris, who's a real cool dude. But I've had other employees there that I didn't like at all (young kid who not only couldn't answer my question, he couldn't understand what I was asking). I bought my crappy road bike (that I LOVE), at A-1, so I took it back to A-1 (Manassas) for some work last year. I think they overcharged me. So now, it's the Bike Lane all the way (unless for some reason I just can't make it over to their distant store). I bribe them with beer, and they ALWAYS treat me well, and they have done a lot of on the spot repairs for me and have done a lot of them very cheap. Once I think they burned me a little on a chain that was defective from the manufacturer, but you know, overall, they treat me so well, I let it slide. To me, there's a lot of art in bike maintenance, and I think overall, the Bike Lane is great.

A co-worker bought his kid a bike from Toys R Us. He's having problems with it.
DUH! ;)

Reluctantly I'll chime in with my 2 cents:
A1 = wayyy too expensive (plus other comments in thread...)
Pedal Shop = cool dudes, but 1/2 a shop (but they will make you deals on stuff)
Performance = still pissed they closed the Manassas store - emergency runs only

The Bike Lane = they are a must. Great people, awesome service, expert knowledge. They are reasonably priced, but seriously, if they do cost a little more for something its gotta be worth it to get that kind of service.

i have a friend over the weekend who asked about "how much would it cost for me to get a comfortable bike so i can ride around the neighborhood".. ok, i thinking you can find a closeout for less than 250, or something newer for low to mid 300's. nice dependable bike, no bling.

i get the typical response. that's too much, i'll go to walmart and get something for less than 100.

i held my tongue and stated, sure you can. I'm not trying to be a bike snob, but the fact simply is you get what you pay for. you can find a bike for cheap at a big box, but once you leave then it's your problem. a simple tune up will double the price of the "great deal" in a snap. why go through that hassle in the first place.

i'll go to walmart and get something for less than 100. Yeah. Remember when I went to Walmart--or was it Kmart? I was at my caving convention and I wanted to buy a disposable bike. All it had to do was last a week. For <$80, it was worth the price, and I'd donate it to a charity at the end of the week. Well it lasted less than a *day* and the pedal started to fall off and stripped the threads in the process so I couldn't screw the pedal back on! Fortunately I was able to return it as defective. Sheesh!

Ah the plot thickens...

I've been hearing good things about TBL for a long time, but haven't made it down there. It's a bit of a haul and Perf. while it ain't perfect, is so dang close to my house...

Any way,
Thanks for the gobs of feed back!

BP in Centreville changed owners a couple of years ago and is now "The Bike Shop". They are the closest shop to me and I have been using them for a number of years with very good results for repairs, wheel builds and parts.

He said the Bike Shop talked up MORE a whole bunch and told him about Saturday's work day and everything. OK, so now I have to put a plug in for them on principle. I have no idea if they're a good shop, but they deserve credit for that! :)

I would say that Pedal Shop is at least 9/10th's of a bike shop. Only because Mike has half a thumb.

I've had nothing but good experiences with the Bike Lane, both with service on the bike and customer service period. They also they support and sponsor a lot of local events.

And the mexican place to the left of them has killer fajitas :D

The owner's name is Jeff and the mechanic's name is Danny. They both worked at the Dale City Bike Shop in Dale City when I got into biking 14 years ago. Danny spent a number of years at Performance and used to be my only mechanic for almost 8 years. I heard that Jeff bought the shop but I have not gotten over there to say hello.
