There was a rather long thread about these on MTBR.com in the 29er forum. The predominant view seemed to be that they are a good idea, but the current bunch are heavy and fragile. Many folks posted photos of their shattered seatposts. It wasn't pretty.
Search for "Gravity dropper" on MTBR in the 29er forum and you'll find the thread. It has 3 pages of discussion.
I used the old spring hite rite from Joe Breeze many years ago. That worked well. That was 18 years ago. I haven't used one since.

PS: Disclaimer -- Take all the stuff written on the 29er forum on MTBR with a grain of salt. That place is a haven for freaks and fanatics. :D You'll find plenty of information... both useful and not.

Don't you know that there is much shame for a cross country rider to use an adjustable seatpost? Just take one in the nuts (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pinoy1x1/378982763/) once in a while to spare yourself from pariah status.

MTB Action mag just had a review this month or last on seat droppers. I can't recall off hand which one they favored, but they basically like all of them.

This months Decline mag has a review on the Maveric Speedball, and gave it a great review - but it only comes in two (large) sizes. Don't quote me, but it was something like 30.6 and 31.8.

Between having my saddle smack me in the ass and going over the bars on steep, technical descents I've decided to at least look into them.
I'm turning into a chicken on such downhills.
My knees are not happy when I don't have my saddle high enough, so just lowering my current saddle height is not an option.
If these things were cheap I'd just buy one and try it out, but before I drop $200+ I want to get some first-hand reports.
If I was worried about pariah status I'd buy some baggy shorts, but besides the inevitable taint issues those mofo's will surely catch on your saddle when you're trying to get your ass over the rear wheel! I'll stick to lycra & mtb pariah status.

I've had a Speedball for more than a year now. It's nice, but a little chunky.
Although I've used it on some rides at the Furnace and in the greater GWNF, I stick with a light, rigid, and trusty Al post for most rides.

I can't remember the last time i had to slide that far back on a saddle, and I'm known for taking some stupid lines (ask people about the steep I rolled in down to the FR on my last WaterShed ride, which I survived, Philman was there).
Seems like you don't have to get that far back on the saddle for most XC stuff.
