05/25/04>>> I got a chance to ride out at Susq. St. Park on Sunday. It turned out to be a great day for a ride. :)
All the trails were in great shape. I saw no mud at all. It's been a year since I last rode here. One of things most notible about Susq. is that the place is so lush with vegetation. Also very, very fragrant. If you've never ridden Susq. before you should definitely check it out. Maps are available from Md. DNR. The terrain will remind you of Avalon a bit...minus the rocks. Lots of hills to test your legs as well as some good moderate sections. The only downer is that some of the steeper hills have log berms that will slow you down when climbing but at least the logs are keeping the trails intact so I guess it's worth it. It is quite a drive if you're from Va. but for those of us around the Baltimore area it's no more than a hour drive away. Besides the trails, there are some great points of interest around the park including the Lower Susq. Greenway trail: ( 3 mile rail trail to Conowingo Dam.)
If you go, I'd wait till after Memorial Day. Traffic will be a bite on Rt.95. ;)

Hey folks,
I have never been to Susquehanna - Can someone tell me how long it takes to dry out up there? - Avalon is the closest to my house and that takes for ever to dry. I would be excited to ride up there but an hour is pretty far to go for a mud bath.

Thanks.

05/28/04>> Wow...that's really hard to say for sure but if I were a betting man, I would bet the trails would be fine. With all the hills there, drainage is pretty good. Most of the rain lately has been from minor cells with rain lasting only minutes. Of course, that's enough to totally mess up riding in Avalon. Susq...well that's another story. Unless it rains up there really hard for a half a day or more the day before you ride, I would think it would be fine....If you go, try to get a good map of the trails, you're going to need it. If you don't have one you might be able to get one from the park office. I think it's near the historical area but I'm not sure. Expect a lot of other people to be using the park during the holiday.. ;)....P.S. During my ride there last week I saw only one trail with mud and it was very minor and quite rideable. No mud fly-up or tire loading at all. Good Luck!

Thanks. My experience has been there are several parts that can stay pretty muddy. Drop the folks at the Harford Velo club a line, they should know -http://www.harfordvelo.org/

With it's high rock content, Frederick Watershed can be ridden almost immediately after a rain. It's an hour from Avalon too. That would be my first choice.

Thanks for the info - I will probably be heading up there next week sometime - I think I am going to order the trail maps off of the dnr website.

Thanks again :)
