When I picked up my El Mar, I also remembered to get some Frame Saver. Since the bike is built, it would need a complete tear-down to do a proper job.

Can this wait a little while before doing? Is time of the "essence" when doing this? Meaning is I don't do it before riding, don't bother because I've given rust a chance already.

Would it be ok to frame save without a complete tear down?

And lastly, how often is this needed? Is it a one time deal?

It should be easy to get the seat tube, head tube, top tube, down tube and seat stays if you can remove the seatpost and fork. It should only require a 5mm allen wrench and knowing how to adjust a headset (check parktool.com). Getting the chainstays would require pulling the EBB, unless you can get the spray-can straw to fit in the tiny drain holes in the chainstays.

It's probably harder to get the can of J.P Weigles than to use it!

So: no, you don't need a complete tear down. you can do most of the bike with your emergency multi-tool if required.

Also: If you ride a steel bike in the rain/wet a lot, you will want to remove the seatpost after each wet ride (at the very least), and turn the bike upside down to drain and dry. re-apply the framesaver each year.

You might want to make sure you don't gum up the EBB with the stuff. I think you'd have to pull it prior to doing the other tubes just to keep it clean.

But, hey... that bike is a 1x9 and has no EBB, right?

Also, you might want to check with Salsa prior to application, unless you already did that or the shop recommended the treatment.

I do have the EBB and I was wondering about that myself. Since I have never used Frame Saver, I have no idea if it coats and dries, if it's oily, etc.

I already have the can of FrameSaver as our LBS carries it, so there I guess I am lucky.

I'll contact Salsa tomorrow and see what's up.

Thanks guys.

When it dries, it's gummy. On an EBB bike, I'd pull out the EBB first before spraying it up (so none of that stuff gets into the EBB mechanism). I'd also clean any Frame Saver that got into the inside of the BB shell with WD-40 first.
