In 1983, I was outgrowing my BMX bike in terms of size and speed capability (I couldn't spin the low gear fast enough to keep up with my friends on 10speed bikes).
The options were: larger chainring on the bmx bike (wouldn't fix the size issue), 24" "cruiser" bmx, 10speed road bike (wouldn't work for my ramp jumping, trail riding style), or those newfangled mountain bikes that were starting to appear.
I got the mountain bike for Christmas while in 6th grade. I rode it like the oversized, geared BMX bike I thought it was. I didn't learn about mountain biking as a sport until a couple years later when I stumbled across an issue of Mountain Bike Action. I STILL remember the article about a bike called "Mountain Klein". It was made of oversized aluminum tubes and had dropbars. The "wrecking crew" member doing the test (or at least the photo shoot) was riding a wheelie through a creek.
Been hooked ever since. BTW, the last few months of my first bike's life was spent as a single-speed (I was a trend setter in 1989). The derailer failed and I was in the process of saving for a new bike, a Raleigh Technium Heat (got the 1990 model, first year with Rapidfire).
I still have the Raleigh. It's at my parents house in Mobile. Since it has horizontal dropouts, I'm going to turn it into a rigid SS as soon as I can fetch it from there.
My third bike was a Klein Pulse (w00t! finally got the Klein), purchased in late 1997. That's the bike I ride today.

I got into mtn biking when I was little, but i fell and got scared and stopped for many years. Then, my brother and parents got me a bike and my bro took me out on a trail. He taught me everything i know. so thanks! :D

I started MTBing in... 98? maybe... I was young! Than I blew my knee out, years of therpy and an operation later now I'm back on the bike. I got into because my cousin lived on alot of private land and dirt biked, as a result he built lots of trails and it was just something rad to do in the summer. Than I went to a summer long MTB camp which sealed the coffin. Now I owe MTB for my career and life goals. its great

I started when I was around 10. A combination of my dad being into riding and doing a Howard County Rec and Parks camp for a couple years. I fell out of it for a while cause I had nobody to ride with. Then I started working at Race Pace and got back into it. Now I have to take a break cause I broke my wrist... :(

Part of an outdoor adventure trip I went on had time spent at Whistler. Always being an extreme sport guy, seeing the hucking and jumping piqued my interest. If only I took advantage of being on such divine soil while I had the chance. :(

I had a not-so-pimp SS before that...and that was before I ever went on group rides or read MTB sites. I tried my dad's IF SS and thought it was fun, so I had to convert

i learned how to ride a bike when i was about 4 and had one of those 16" bmx bikes. i road that bike until i was about 10, then that bike got lost in the move, and i inhereted my brothers old pacific full suspension toys 'r' us bike, i learned how to wheelie and bunnyhop on that bike. the first bike i ever baught with my own money what a rockhopper about 8 months ago after seeing my brother djing, i got really into djing and converted my rockhopper ss, watching the "jib" series is what started my love for urban riding and 3-4 months ago i baught my friends old p.1 frame and build my bike from there, since then it has pretty much turned into a trials bike (rigid fork, low gear ratio and working barkes) i barely ever ride any trails exept for some djing and some rock creek trails (witch i havent riden since i got my rigid) the only reason im even in this forum is because kirk pear pressured me

Wyatt your grear ratio is 36:18 right? Thats a 2:1 ratio. Its a normal trail/street ratio. And peer pressure is sometimes good.
