I may have some shimano mechs (quite used, perfectly functional) and brand new rotors (1 shimano, 1 avid clean sweep)... but wouldn't be until after the holidays. I look to upgrade my brakes in the next month or so. stay in touch if your int'd.

I have a set of Hayes MX somethingorothers (I think MX2) and rotors sitting in the shop. They are both in excellent shape and in need of a good home. If interested give me a shout @ 571-643-5207. I live in Centreville so we could meet half way or if you want bring the rig by the house and I can install them for you. ( I have bulk Ripcord housing and cables if needed)

Pricepoint would run you around $100. I'll let em go for $50 and install for free if needed. (cable and housing would be a little bit extra)

Damn, I never think to ask the board when I need to buy something like that. I just recently bought a brand new rotor (from the LBS) for a stupid trainer wheel! DUH!

I have to say that I with the amount of people and resources in the area, I've been able to build a frame from the ground up. Plus its been great meeting and talking to some of the members!

Jenson has the avid that are brand new, taken off of a new bike, mounted but never used for $39. Pretty hard to beat that. You just dont get the box that they originally come in. Big Whoop.

Bikesmart.com has the same deal, but you get the box. :)
That's what I bought this summer. They're still going strong, no problems with mine.
Jenson is showing them out of stock, but Bikesmart shows them in stock.

Yeah, I checked those out before but they are Avid BB5 versus some 'experienced' better quality ones that I have been quoted on here.
I will tell you that I have bought everything else on this build from Jenson including the OE derailleurs, wheelset, crank arms, and headset. Just got that shipment in on Friday. I am always checking out places like Jenson and Blue Sky while I am at work. Luckily, I think our IT guys are cyclists or someone would have approached me by now about the amount of time I spend on those sites plus the MORE site!
Thanks for the heads up!

FWIW, I have an Avid mechanical (rotor, caliper / pads, and lever (generic brand, v-brake compatible)) set up laying around I really have little or no use for, that could use a home. I'll let it go cheap. Pads should be in decent shape (mayyyybe 40% wear (?)), rotor is pretty true. Replaced my mechanicals with hydros.
Email or IM me if you're interested.

I'd stay away from the bb5's. A bike mech friend of mine was telling me about how the pad adjustment likes to um... how do I say this politely... unadjust itself. You'd be much better off with a used bb7 at a similar price.

I've been running a BB5 up front since August or so, I haven't noticed any problems. How exactly does it "unadjust" itself?

As the pads wear, you adjust them by screwing in the red knobs on the side a click or two - at least that's how you do it on the bb7. If I recall correctly he was saying that the bb5 just screws in and doesn't have the positive 'click' and that after a while they may unscrew, i.e. unadjust.
I haven't personally laid hands on one so maybe I am wrong. If you could either confirm or refute this with your bb5, I'd appreciated it. (Just turn the knob and see if it clicks into the next position as you turn it.)
If I'm right in my understanding, you should probably check the pad adjustment pretty regularly, particularly after a fall when you might accidentally hit and loosen the adjustment knobs on the outboard side.

I thought the bb5 completely lacked the outboard adjustment knob. Clocks only has the inboard one from what i can recall and the outboard spot is occupied with a red cap instead of a dial.

That's interesting. I guess you have to adjust the outboard spacing using cable tension... Does the inboard knob click when you turn it? That's the real question. Like I said, I haven't really held one to see how it works so I'm really passing along second hand information. Take it with a grain of salt.

The outboard knob is adjusted by cabel tension using the barrel adjuster mounted on the caliper. Im not sure if the inboard knob clicks or not but from when i handeled it it felt like it had a bit of resistance to it so it isnt very easy to turn by bumping up against something or ratteling along the trail.

The inboard knob clicks. I adjust the outboard pad using cable tension. I haven't noticed my brake losing adjustment, though I've had to make a couple minor adjustments as the pads wear. That said, it has still required much fewer adjustments in that time frame than the rim brake it replaced.

i ran bb5's for about 6 months on a bike before buying a new bike w/ hydros. here's the scoop: they have an inboard adjustment screw that clicks w/ every about 1/8 turn. it uses a torx bit, which kind of sucks, but i never had any trouble w/ it coming out of adjustment while on the trail. they are kind of a pain to get adjusted initially (as compared to the bb7's w/ the inboard and outboard adjusters), but i had good success w/ them.
p.s. while running them, i used avid full metal jacket cables and was extremely pleased. i would definitely recommend the $30 investment for anyone running mechs.

Anyone have a Hayes MX-1 caliper lying around...or even the adjuster side of the caliper? The front caliper on my Trek Fuel 70 has a frozen adjuster barrel, I mean that thing is STUCK. The brakes themselves work fine and I've been adjusting the pads by altering the position of the mount, which is kind of backwards. I can't justify forking up the bucks for a new caliper right now, since it doesn't affect the stopping ability.
