Fairfax CCT - VA (http://www.more-mtb.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1200) 9:30 AM
Saturday, November 18th, All day - Instead of a traditional trail construction or maintenance project this Fall, FCPA is asking for signage evaluation, repair and cleaning. I'm proposing this as a worktrip/ride of the entire CCT - approx 43 miles. The northern 16 miles is mostly single track and then it is a mix of gravel, cinder, natural surface, asphalt, sidewalk and bits of single track. We will be doing the following tasks:

Cleaning the interpretative signs
Checking the mile markers and directional signs
Marking new directional sign locations
Adding arrows to directional signs
Evaluating future potential signage to address shared use and trail rating
Track significant maintenance needed - e.g. trees down, etc.

The CCT can now be ridden dry with all major crossings either bridges or large stones. We'll be able to stop along the way for lunch and water. We will be stopping a lot to check out signs so it will be a casual pace overall. We'll need to set up a shuttle before the ride. You'd be welcome to ride sections but you'll need to arrange your own shuttle and/or bail point.

Bring: Extra water bottles, snacks and long distance attitude.

Directions: We'll start at sunrise in Great Falls and end at Occoquan Regional Park passing through Reston, Oakton, Fairfax City, Wakefield, Accotink, Springfield, Laurel Hill (Lorton).

WHY? All the parks in our area rely heavily on volunteer efforts to maintain the trails. A temperature fluctuating winter means that most trails have taken a freeze/thaw beating and need some TLC. A few hours of work from you will ensure that your favorite trails stay open and fun for everyone. You can also learn about trail building and maintenance techniques, scope out new places to ride and meet fun people. Hours worked in the spring and fall series will count toward MORE’s annual trail work awards, which recognize those who put in over 20 hours of work and also support both MORE and the International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA) with their paid membership. The awards include some great bike gear and discounts. Plus, you could be eligible to win a new frame or bike! Stay tuned as we will be announcing these and other prizes soon on the MORE website www.more-mtb.org.

WHAT? Bring work boots or sturdy shoes, work gloves (an old pair of cycling gloves will do), plenty of water, and lunch or a snack. MORE and local land managers will supply the tools, but feel free to bring your personal favorite (shovel, pick, metal rake, hand saw, etc.). We’ll also have a stash of Clif Bars on hand, thanks to IMBA and Clif Bar! Some workdays will have lunch donated so we encourage volunteers to RSVP to the work day contact in order to plan for food, tools, supplies, and in case of last minute changes.

NOTE: Trail workdays begin at 9:30 AM unless otherwise noted.
