I am moving from CT to MD soon and I will be working in Lexington Park. Are there any places to ride near Lexington Park and / or what are the closes plces to ride from Lexington Park? It looks like most of the rides in MD are up north. Any info would be appreciated.

You're definitely wayyyyyyyyy out there. Lots of great road riding out that, way, though. I guess you're going to be working over at NAVAIR or something? That's a hike from the DC area - I always loathe having to make that drive over to our Lexington Park office.

Anyway, not sure what would be considered close, but your closer bets might be Rosaryville and possibley Avalon/Patapsco.

Craig, you NOVA puke.
You don't know what your talking about.
So. Md. is famous for its MTBing.

Ok seriously,
the one local spot is St. Marys River state park.
Its not much, a 8 mile loop around a lake, but its pretty well maintained.
No rocks, no elevation changes, some water crossings, and lots and lots of roots.

Its 15 minutes from Lex.Park.

Yep, Saint Mary's Lake is it for riding in the Lexington Park area. I'm down in the "LP City" and ride it as my "local" trail "system," but there's only so many ways you can ride a loop... It's not bad, but could be better; I basically make it a time trial everytime I ride it.

Aside from riding there I try to get up to Rosaryville (1 hour) or Patapsco-Avalon (1.5 hours) when I can, but unfortunately it hasn't been as much as I would have liked lately.

Tommy,

You should stop calling names and go back to hurting baby seals (something you know plenty about)!

Baby seals aren't in season for another 6 weeks.
I'm just antsy.

You know, John kinda looks like a baby seal in the right lighting.

So I have ridden Roseryville and St Mary's Lake twice(once at night). Here is my assessment if you give a shit. Roseryville is VERY fun kind of like an 8 mile BMX track. I will be back there ASAP

St Mary's Lake SUCKED. I rode there twice and I went through a set of brake pads and probably wore my rim down to nothing. It has so much potential but the trail doesn't make sense. The trail just plows through little streams rather than using the most space and going around the streams. Some of the trees would make great bridges. Now that I live here I hope meet more people that would like to help make the trail better. I am curious about the rules on that. I will try and write IMBA.

I would also love to ride with some folks down here. Where are the bike shops? I stopped by Mikes Bikes but I haven’t raced BMX in 20 years and they don’t have much in the Mountain Bike / Road Bike dept. Please e-mail if you would like to ride manvillej@hotmail.com. My name is Juston

hey , welcome to the area, and you are right st mary's lake is not the best by far but its all we have down here in a sense - bum deal ! sounds like you have hit everything in our southern area. anyway the two best bike shops are patuxent adventure center in solomons and bike doctor of waldorf both are great folks ! mikes in lexgt is strickly bmx and some parts although he sells fuji ? i am always up for rides in area and have and will continue to participate in all events possible come spring and summer 07...there are a few folks the ride on a limited basis down here but i try to go every chance possible..when do you plan to get out again ?

I thought the same thing about it when I rode it the first time.
Yup its not much but its all ya got.
If you haven't ran into the group that takes care of the place and rides there, you can find them on google groups, the name is SMMB. I ran into them once on and they put me on their list.

I'm not sure whats going on with them though, no ones posted since 11-8.

BTW, I would be up for some riding there, I live about 20 miles north of the park.
The lake is a little bit closer to me than Rosaryville.

I have lights and I ride as much as possible. Almost any and every night if I can. My full suspension with disk brakes will be shipped soon so I won't be sweating the brake pads so much. I love my SS and I was bumbed it got so trashed. However, I will gladly trash my full- susp. for a good group ride--Juston

I'm going to try to get out to SML sometime this weekend, depending on how bad the predicted precip for tomorrow is. I haven't been out there in about 2 weeks.

I'm a local on that SMMB (Southern Maryland Mountain Bikers) list as well... activity tends to die down in the winter months...me and one other guy last year were doing regular Thursday nite rides around the lake. We managed November and December before it kind of fell thru. So far I've only done one night lap out there this year, and that was my ride 2 weeks ago. Hoping I can pick it back up in December. I try to get a night lap during the week and then a lap or two on the weekends during the winter if I'm lucky.

And Yeah, it sucks that it's the only offering of a trail around here. I love to hate it and have to love it since it's the only option for after work rides or quick weekend rides. You'll get to know the trail all too well. I don't even want to think about how many laps I've ridden out there...

Didn't notice mention of Cedarville in this discussion. It ain't no Patapsco but is fun in its own way. I'd guess it drys faster than St Marys but not as fast as R'ville.

FWIW, our MD trail wizard Austin has a few fires burning in Prince Georges. Looks like the long-planned restructuring & additions at Cosca may actually happen soon. A later phase of this project could include a connector between Cosca and R'ville (a la Schaeffer, Hoyles Mill, Black Hill). There is also the real potential for significant natural surface trail along the Patuxent River cooridor on the PG side. Not exactly in the backyard for Solomons and Lexington Park folk, but these are something.

Always looking for help on this stuff. Not dirt moving help (the easy part!) but the public meeting, talking to planners, showing the need, building support, kind. If you are curious, Austin's info is on the CONTACT page.

Speaking of St Marys, I know MDNR wants to address some of the chronic wet areas on the loop. Perhaps something will happen in 2007 which will make those trails a bit more all-weather. If locals provide park staff with positive feedback, maybe a little sooner.

Sounds like St. Mary's needs a trail liason. One of the locals should take the bull by the horns...

i'am in this area, could someone elaborate on what a trail liason would do. i assume this would be representing riders to agencies of the county or state or do i have this all wrong ?? i do spend a lot of time there and might not mind politic'in
