Thursday - November 8th Intermediate Ride ** CANCELLED** :(
I know the weather on Thursday is predicted to be absolutely beautiful, but these two days of rain have left Wakefield very sloppy. If this was summer, the surrounding grasses and local plants would just drink our trails dry, but that’s just not the case any more.
Side Note: I wouldn't mind doing the first half (15 miles) of the PPTC road ride tomorrow. If anyone wants to join me give me a shout back. It would be on road bikes with lights. If we needed a longer ride we could extend.
Craig - Is your ride still on? (I'll modify the calendar to reflect either way)

Where would the meeting point be? What's the pace? This is dirt road stuff, right?
I REALLY want to ride tomorrow, but if the Casual ride is open tomorrow, I'm better off doing that. The PPTC pace might be a tad fast for me if I don't get enough notice about the Casual Wakefield ride to change my tires to my narrower ones.
So, I'm a definite maybe for the PPTC ride. :)

Given the current assessment of trail conditions, the casual ride scheduled for tomorrow is also OFF. Let's give the trails time to dry.

So, MOBL, what are the details for the PPTC ride?

No Mountain Bikes. It be a road ride. (I'm too lazy to put Skinny Slicks on the IF)
The PPTC Wakefield ride is a 25 mile summer ride sponsored by the Potomac Peddlers Touring Club. Riders leave from Wakefield (on their road bikes), cross Braddock Road and proceed to knock out 15 miles in that North Springfield neighborhood. Traffic is light and the streets offer a good mix of flat, rolling and short hill climbs.
The second half of their ride follows Braddock Road down to Wakefield Chapel road where you hang a right and climb up and into NOVA. That's OK when it's bright and sunny, but not my idea of fun in the dark and with a group.
The pace tomorrow would be a nice 15 to 18 mph avg (Depending if it's just me or if there's a couple of others to share the pulling). I'm looking down at this Kilroy's GUT and feel like I just have to do something. This would be a NO DROP group ride.
L
PS Although I love that summer ride, the AA's were finishing the complete 25 circuit with a 23.2 mph average. If you ever wanna get faster so you can race your MTB, break out your road bike and try this one out.

Ahhh. For some reason I thought you were referring to the Loudoun dirt roads route that's being next weekend. Yeah, there's no way I can hang on pavement with a mountain bike.

It was a nice (but quiet) ride last night.
Me, myself and I left the Parking lot at about 6:50 PM and after about 23 miles I got back to my car at about 8:15 PM. Not a particularly fast ride, but a nice spin.
The night air was strangely calm. Almost no wind at all. The air had a mix of warm and cool temperatures. The Brand New L&M Marathon lit the road like I was on a Motorcycle. A Red Flasher on the seat post let vehicles "Behind" me know just how often I go to Kilroy's. Except for Hemming, there was almost no cars out at all. Every one of those side streets I rode had pole lamps.
All in all a good ride and an acceptable alternative to trail riding when the weather dampens our prospects for riding. BTW - Rain is called for Next Wednesday and Thursday.

I might be interested in dusting off the road bike next week if it rains - not sure if I'll be able to average more than 16-17 mph at this point and in my current shape, though.... Best I can offer is to maybe leave you from having to talk to yourself...

I put the "narrow knobbies" on my mountain bike and put in 20miles on the W&OD in the Vienna area (rode to Arlington in one direction, then to Reston in the other). I managed a blistering 13mph, but it was a nice ride nonetheless. I had to shoo the deer off the path a few times after it got dark.
BTW, bright blinky headlights suck. I just about went blind when folks sporting those lights came towards me.

since it looks like it is gonna be crappy on Thurs night.......... I say we just all meet at the bar. We all know the reason we ride on a Thurs night is to get out to the bar anyway.
I am sure Craig, given a extra 1 hour of bar time, can offend and insult just as well as leading a night ride :D

We all go to Kilroys. We set up our trainers. Put beer in our camelbaks. Every once in a while, we rise up off the saddles to hop "logs." The every now and then we have to cross a creek and a waitress throws a bucket of water on us!

CRAIG2
November 15th, 2006, 11:44 AM
No, the NRS - the front wheel is somehow off-center (for lack of a better description), and the rear suspension bearings / bushings I think are shot - waiting to see if that's something Germantown Cycles can service. Who knows... the GT is still rock solid. Though, GT's suck.

Assuming we're talking about the same wheel, Craig's front wheel lost dish (so it appeared) on the last Thursday night ride I attended. That was the ride where me, Punga (I think), Sophie, Jabberwocky, and you split off and rode the bowl for a while before quitting for the night.
Based on what little I know about wheelbuilding, I can't think of a reason a front wheel could do what his did without some sort of major failure.

Axle or bearing problem maybe, though I would expect either of those to affect how the wheel turned. IIRC, it seemed as solid as ever.

Either or goes well with the cases of Gatorade in my trunk. Vodka is better with the lemon-lime, and tequila goes well with the lemonade flavor - a splash of triple sec is a nice touch, too. :D

Yeah, based on trail conditions yesterday, if we get any rain in the next 24 hours I would call the ride off. There's talk of heading to Kilroys tomorrow, though, to talk about riding, think of new ways to offend people, group hug, think of creative cocktails to make with Gatorade, and just bond in general. Possibly mud wrassling.

I have a VERY cheap LED commuter light that you're welcome to. It's barely trail-worthy, but if someone covers you with an HID from behind you might scrape by. Someone used it on the casual ride a month or so ago when their loaner didn't show up.
I'll be on the silver 'goose.

That would be me (I think)...I was unfortunately the last person in the pack, so I would steal the light from the rider in front of me, but if I fell back a bit, let's say it got interesting. It was also my first ever night ride, and probably 5th time riding off-road period which made it even more interesting.
So if you are comfortable at night on singletrack, you probably could get by with it if you know the trail.
