In cooperation with Maryland DNR, two night rides have been arranged in Southern MD for early November - Wednesday Nov 8 at Rosaryville and Wednesday Nov 15 at Cedarville.

As with all lit events in MD, these are group rides for no more than 20 riders. We may split into a couple groups based on pace depending on the participants. RSVP is required. You do not need to be a MORE member to participate.

To reserve your spot, contact Dan at hudson_dc at yahoo.

Both rides will begin promptly at 6:30PM. We will wrap up no later than 9:15PM so we can be out of the parks by 9:30 PM. Good chance a few folks will grab some grub at one of the fine establishments along Route 5 post-ride.

Thanks to the staff at MDNR's Southern MD Rec Complex for this opportunity.

Can we make the Rosey ride a weekly occurrence? I'm sure it's going to be a success.

Thanks to whomever put these rides together.

Well then, just meet up at 730 for the second lap. Traffic should be reasonable by then, hopefully.

Why didn't I think of that? I guess I didn't know there was a second lap so that I could catch up with everyone. thanks for the idea!

Whenever you arrive at the rose, take the trail counter clockwise and meet the group somewhere in the middle and do a hug and uturn Hookup. Why wait around in the parking lot when you could be riding? Dave M.

If you get off work at 5, you should be okay, takes me about 30 min to get home to bowie, and from my house takes about 30 to 45 min to rosaryville in traffic, you may be able to make it by 630

Dave, I'm so bummed!!! :( I'm pretty sure I'll be on the DL for the rest of the week. With any luck I can try for some riding this weekend... we'll see. If there's some miracle healing in the next 48 hours you'll be the first to know. Worst case I'll see you for the Rosaryville trail work this Saturday (that's right everyone, c'mon out for some R'ville trail work, did I mention we are working to put together a picnic for afterwards?)

Sigh... My opportunity to be the ass.

One of the reasons we do not have open nightriding at MDNR properties is concerns the effect of a multi-hour broken stream of lights will have on wildlife. A couple of passes by a group or two, clearing a given area in a minute or so, was deemed acceptable.

With this in mind, I'd ask folks to try their best to be ontime and not to ride "backwards" to try to meet the group. This keeps with the spirit of our arrangment with MDNR. This good relationship makes these rides, the ones at Schaeffer, and potential lit visits to Gambrill, possible.

Waiting at the trailhead for a potential additional lap is okay but you do so at your own risk - the group may decide frosty beverages trumps additional mileage!

Thank you for understanding --Dan

Status...

R'ville: Full
C'Ville: Many available

If everyone who has asked still plans to ride, we're full for this week at Rosaryville. Now we just need to have good weather. I'll be at the park all day for other biz so will have good data on conditions. If we do get rain tomorrow evening, keep your eye on the forum on Wednesday for an update.

Hey Dan, if Roseryville does get rained out, is there any chance of rescheduling?

I'd like to add my name to the hat for Cedarville (if double-dipping is allowed), because riding tomorrow is looking unlikely.

R'ville Ride Status... Pretty clear the weather overnight has not been ideal. I'll be in Upper Marlboro throughout the day and will have a chance to check the trails. There should be a definitive update here (maybe not by me) sometime this afternoon.

Just got off the phone with Dan Hudson, who is on the scene at Rosaryville. Rained all morning there and conditions are too wet for riding tonight. So the night ride has been cancelled. Sorry. Maybe we'll have better luck next week with Cedarville.

Bummer, but I knew that was coming. Thanks for the update Karen.

Just curious, do they continue with trail maintenance even if it's raining a bunch? Does that make things easier or harder?

Trail work is somewhat easier when the soil is softer. I will conduct trailwork events in light rain. Heavy rain and high winds are 2 good reasons to get out of the woods and into an establishment of libations and nutrition. Dave Marchyshyn.

Sorry to disappoint folks this evening - really wasn't a hard decision as it was raining or misting at R'ville pretty much all day.

Still a number of spots available for next Wed at Cedarville for folks jonesin' for some lit southern MD trail.

Re: future lit rides at R'ville. Not likely that I personally will try to reschedule. But this should not discourage another. All it takes is for someone to step up, know the rules, take responsibility, and make arrangements with the Rosaryville land managers. A good first step would be contacting the liaison (Mr Marchyshyn) or the (unofficial?) night ride coordinator (Mr Tinyk).

Not looking good for Wednesday. Sunday's rain on top of what fell last week has really made things wet at Cedarville. Hope for a lot of sun and wind tomorrow. As with R'ville, there will be a definitive go/no-go message on Wednesday afternoon.

I would really love to do some night rides at Rosaryville. I think it would be a great place for darkness beginners with the smooth rolling trails. So who wants to head this up? :D

Hudson's humble assistant here...
Dan says he's cautiously optimistic that the ride will go tonight. He'll be there at the start time, ready to ride. Don't know exactly what trail conditions are like after Sunday's rain-fest, but he's willing to give it a try. If things turn nasty, probably cut the ride short and head straight to BBQ.

You weren't the original stopper for the light adjustment. I had put my light one hole to far forward on the helmet and couldn't light the trail ahead on the faster sections, but thanks for taking the blame for the stop.

Really was a great ride, had never ridden Cedarville before and really recommend it. Thanks to Dan for showing us around the loop.

I never realized how freaky a group of riders coming at you ( half with HID lights) is.
I couldn't tell at first if is was a DNR truck or the group.
It was nice riding that place at night with others (and legally). Takes most of the creepiness out of the ride.

Off topic question about the lights.
I have a jet phantom that pivots on top of my helmet. I can and do adjust it, and often do, on the fly. I thought all lights were like that. Aren't they?

Tommy -
My lights (Light and Motion) do adjust up and down, but only so far. The light was forward enough on the helmet that the slope of the helmet kept me from getting the light up high enough. Hence the move. Only 2nd or 3rd night ride with these lights and still forgetting where to put them :).

Not knowing where we were most of the time, your light looked like a house light. Kept thinking, why are we riding towards this house. But then figured I was dreaming.
