I'm in for this ride, does anyone want to carpool? I live in Silver Spring, just off the beltway and not far from 270. I can fit 2 more bikes (3 total) on my car or if you've got a bigger vehicle, I can chip in for gas and beers on the way home ;)
Any takers?

P.S.
I'll be out of the country next week, but can work on details when I get back if anyone's interested.

Coincidentally enough, I live in downtown SS and have three total trays on my roof and am also interested in going and carpooling.
By "classic ride," how much of that actually means "sufferfest?" I'm wondering what mileage and total saddle time we're looking at - I'm not particularly fit right now, and wouldn't want to go if I were holding folks back. I once did 24 miles at Pisgah and that's about as epic as I can handle. Any advice?

The last time I did this ride, i believe we were out for about 4 hours with just enough time spent enjoying the overlooks. The fireroad climb isnt bad, long but not bad. 1500 feet or so. The rocky ridge is good and technical = fun. I remember a fairly technical climb/hike a bike. I know a couple guys climbed it and a lot of us were walking.
This is a great ride, i highly reccomend showing up for it. I'm hoping i'm ready to ride by then.

Just found out my dad is coming into town next weekend and I have a b-day party go to at 3 near Baltimore. Catherine's Furnace just won't be near my travels that day. Maybe later this winter, we can get another group together and head up there.

Due to the start of Virginia Modern Firearms Hunting Season this weekend I need to postpone this ride. Note to self check schedule before scheduling rides in the Fall!
The new Date is Dec 10th. there are no trailwork days that weekend. There is an RLAG ride on Sat the 9th at Gambrill but nothing on Sunday at this time.
To compensate for this ride I will be helping out Punga's ride on the 18th at Gambrill.

I rode that area yesterday. Trails are in great condition, a couple wet spots here and there but...
the loop I rode was park on 211 at the orange trail parking, ride 340 to Catherine Furnace and start the loop backwards to the direction you all are going. Instead of going back via FR, we dropped down from the overlook to 211.
Holy Crap. Spectacular DH. A couple very hairy chutes ( I had to walk part, only one of us cleaned it) and a ripping descent to the visitor center at the 211 Gap - after that more silly fast singletrack DH through crazy tight trees and loose leafy trails.
Ride time was a little over 3 hours but we were stamping out a pretty decent pace. I highly recommend that loop but be very very cautious on the DH from the overlook. Very easy to get into a lot of trouble there.

So plan on getting to Hojos in time to make your carpool arrangements please. So far we have about 8 people committed to this ride. the weather is shaping up to be sunny clear and brisk.

It is a lot drier than EF and the ridge riding is not as steep as the EF downhill. The views from the overlook are outstanding.

It's about an hour's drive from DC to the car-pool stop in Warrenton, and maybe another hour to the trail head.

Hi I would really like to join this ride, but I do have some quick questions. First is there a group limit? This week is kinda hectic & I won't know my status until Friday evening.
Second can someone give a brief overview of the terrain? Are their other trails closer to DC that I might know that resemble this ride - as I noticed you classified it as intermediate / advanced. Sorry I am a terrible map reader, how many miles are you estimating?
Thanks for any info you can provide as my questions stem from the fact that I will be traveling all the way from Baltimore (small pickup & can carry a passenger)
thanks

But very different in the actual ride. It is a about 10-12 miles I guess with the whole figure 8 loop. I expect at least 3 hours but probably close to four. there is not a limit on people and we will most likely break up into multiple groups.

I am also considering this ride, but feel like I'd be holding everyone back. I am in good shape, but only have 1 year of experience and can't (well, have not tried it anyways) ride down shock-a-billy at FH.
I didn't have any problem with the mud hole gap trail and Signal Knob, but avoided Bear Wallow since I was solo and only have a partial year (non MTB injuries) under my belt. I go uphill quite well, but lack experience on steep downs.
I am thinking of waiting for next year on this one. Advice anyone?

I am thinking of waiting for next year on this one. Advice anyone?Iffin' ya want, I could go and we could be a team of pokies. I'm sure I'm not as fast as you. And I'm not all that terrific at rocks, but I do enjoy rocks when they're not too big or too steep. I enjoy EF a lot, even though I walk part of it.
Camp emailed me the details of the trail and it kinda scared me. I know that if I go solo, I can always walk the whole thing. It's only a little worse pushing a bike than it is walking without a bike. So why not try? What have I got to lose?
The only thing is that if you go with a group, I hate to bog the others down. BUT! If there are several of us in that boat, then we can be our own little pokey team. They may be better riders, but I guarantee we can have more fun anyway. I'll bring goodies and share 'em with the pokey crew and nobody else. Well, Ok, maybe with Scud. Even if he didn't answer my question about whether I should come which greatly discouraged me and made me think "no" until you posted. :o

I'll definitely be coming, and I should have one, probably 2, buddies joining me. We'll likely be driving straight to the trailhead since there're three of us and no real possibility of further carpooling, unless it's hard to find and we're likely to get lost. I'll e-mail a definite number within the next couple of days. We're stoked!

The tough part of this ride is the fireroad climb to the ridge. It has taken me close to 45 minutes to an hour to climb. There are two ways to to speed that part up. You can leave before 10:30 and the faster people will catch up or you can wait at the trailhead to the ridge. You can drive up to the ridge TH and someone can go later and pick up your car. the ridge ride is not that steep in either direction. The 2nd part of the ride has a little hike a bike in it but not near as tough as Bear wallow. Plus the ensueing downhill is a lot easier than Bear Wallow's downhill.

No way are you allowed to skip a climb. *That's* cheatin'! :D
I like the idea of gettin' there early and just spending an extra half hour or more hauling my slow heiny up the hill before the rest of ya'll start!
I dunno. Here's what Camp wrote to me earlier today. I assume he won't mind me posting it up:
long, 5-mile gravel climb. steep at the bottom, grueling all the way.
a short, smoothish, flat, doubletrack to the orange trail T,
techy, rocky, ridge singletrack to the overlook about 1/4 mile,
backtrack
techy rocky ridge for about 2 miles, mostly slightly downhill,
back on road, downhill for 1/4 mile
hike-a-bike, similar to EF's, but much much shorter,
fine singletrack descent > fun fireroad descent.
But *then* he wrote:
"well, that ridge trail on the CF ride is a lot like the Spruce Knob Trl." Which was in response my telling him how I could ride about 200' of the Spruce Knob Trail when I walked about 1-1/2 miles of it (he directed me to that trail, though my rock riding skills have improved since then).
But he also wrote that "it's probably easier than the standard EF loop."

I want to bring my camera. I decided to do a video Christmas card this year. I did a 4 minute digital video of me explaining what I did this year. OK, I'm looking like I'll probably be there for the ride. I will show up a good half hour to 1 hour early to get a head start. I expect to do this solo, unless someone posts up or emails me to coordinate with me. Then, we'll all regroup on top. I'll match up with the most cautious or pokiest of the group and we'll work our way back.
I may be crappy at riding, but I'm decent at reading maps, so I'm happy to deal with that end of the ride.

At least you know I drive a SUV, that's more than I can say about you, accept you have a Corolla and a Tacoma, your MORE jersey has the word MORE in the wrong spot, you like Walsh's posts more than anyone else, who give out green dots with iresponsibility, you focus way too much on irrelevent topics like stickers on someone elses trucks, you own a dead squirrel, and you obviously ride so slow that walking is a fast paced sport.
I WAS going to ride Patapsco with a local PRO, but since it appears the "in" crowd will be out a CF and I enjoyed myself so much the last time I was out there (like three Christmases ago) I'm going to go this time.

In spite of the fact that I missed the turn (twice) and was about 10 minutes late we had a great ride. 15 people but no DC Raider :( We broke up into a fast group and casual group and headed on out. The weather was perfect. We did take a few pics that will be posted soon and the casual ride took about 4.5 hours to complete. When we got back to the cars a few of the fast folks had built a roaring fire that felt good at 4pm as the sun was setting. I did forget how much fun that ride is. the only bummer is it takes two hours to get there. It was good to put a face with the name of more people. Lil Tommy rocked the house !!!! Super props to Squirrel Girl for the tasty bake goods after the ride.
We will be going back to the GW on Dec 30th just don't know where yet. Kennedy Peak? Duncan Hollow? Woodstock Tower? EF? CF?

Great ride. Thanks to everyone for making it worth the drive. Good pace on both the fast and the slow ends. Thanks to the quicker group for hanging on as I played catch up. Squirrel Girl's powdered sugar pastries were mighty yummy. The post ride camp fire: Crucial. Good times were had.
As for Scud's recommendation for another ride, I'm in. Anywhere in the GWNF will be great. Woodstock Tower has a nice view from the top, very technical rocky ridge and avoids a hike-a-bike at EF. Never been to Kennedy Peak or Duncan Hollow. How about the IMBA epic Southern Traverse in Harrisonburg, or part of it. Might have to be overnight considering the driving distance, but doable. Just an idea.

Yeah, there is even al book about 101 ways to cook codfish - and even more do exist :p . Also, we are talking mainly about dried salted cod. I am not going into details how the whole thing is prepared, but yes I did pick that handle because nothing more portuguese than codfish :), and would be easly to be recognized by other portuguese people. The other option was porkchop, which would leave way too much room for trouble
Great thing about this ride, was I wasn't the fastest one, neither the slowest one, so I had a chance (among other things) to see Sud tumble on a switchback, Tommy submerging is foot crossing the creek, and no one saw ( I believe) my own misshaps , like riding over 50 yards dowhill with my feet off the pedals and cursing all way down trying to avoid falling on the bumpy ride - good thing I was on a FS, because even with suspension, my butt got sored :(

Well, Philip (or is it Phillip?), Here's where our heritages cross (or collide)... Christmastime is when we would traditionally eat Lutefisk. If you don't know what it is, don't ask, but it starts with cod, and is prepared the Scandanavian way.
Well, my life is totally out of control these days. I did NOT arrive early as planned. I was at a totally energy low. I felt OK, but had NO umph to go up. While I'm normally slow, it was quite out of character for me to feel so bad. Oh, well.
However, the ride was great, aside from that. Very pretty. Rocks were fun. If I were to ride it a few more times, I'd clean some more of them. And at at less leafy time of year, I'd do better, too, but still it was a blast.
Thanks to Philip and Eric for hanging with me. It wasn't necessary, but your company was quite pleasant.
To whoever that guy was who kept calling me "Bunny," it's SQUIRREL, SQUIRREL GIRL (girl because it rhymes). Rabbits are lagomorphs. Squirrels are rodents for gosh sakes! :p ;)
armcalmtb: Great pictures! Love the one of the person going down the stairstep rocks! However your camera seems to have the same problem mine does. Intermittantly, the shutter doesn't open all the way. I need to bring mine back. I paid for the extended warranty, so I really should do something about mine.
Thanks for leading Scud. Always good to have ya around.

I had a little spill near the bottom of the long downhill. The baby heads covered in leaves got me. I wondered if I'd wake up with a big purple bruise, but alas, all I got was a 1-2" scrape (how'd that happen thru my tights without ripping them?).
Drats--no new picture for the Battle Scars gallery! :(

Yeah, it was all good. Except for the vine thing, and that should heal up pretty quick.

For those not on the trip.... Picture a piano wire stretched across the trail. Actually, I guess he saw the wire, but figured he'd just bust it when he hit it

It looks like he got into a barfight especially in the back of his neck. He has a good story to tell

Yeah, a bar fight against someone with really long fingernails!
It was a great ride, Scott. Thanks for organizing it and getting everything together. This was my first time to CF and certainly will not be my last. I would like to try riding there without all the leaves -- they do manage to cover some of the sketchy areas -- particularly that frozen creek full of rocks and leaves. It sure was nice to get back to the lot and find the fire going, and then get some of Barbara's cake (thanks for that, by the way).
Beautiful day, good ride, no injuries. Can't ask for anything better than than.

I just loosen my grip up and try to plow through.
If I could see what I was going over I'd probly turn chicken and walk.

I kept telling Eric it was Tommy's 29" wheels that made it so easy for him to get over the rocks! ;)
Nice riding, Tommy! I was impressed! :)

..all depends to whom I have to answer. My mom did not like the name change so much, but officialy - on the citizenship document - is Phillip , with double L
Lutefish, yes I know what it is. I saw once that show - Dirty Jobs, and the host was helping preparing it. The best cod is the Norwegian - at least as far as I recall to hear, and was the most expensive too
DISCLAIMER: I just watched the show, didn't suggest the idea, or anything else :p and the Norway plug is based on other people's opinion, that claimed to know better

Two words, Babs:
1) Restraining
2) Order
(someday you'll have to tell me who gave you a red dot on account of lil' ol' me)

(someday you'll have to tell me who gave you a red dot on account of lil' ol' me)Actually, I don't think it was really because of you. I think it was more because of the way I intoned about the RLAG rules that were being semi-but-not-quite broken by the co-occuring RLAD ride. I completely don't care if people prefer one type of ride versus another. I totally just wanna go with the flow, but I was just getting yanked around a little by the rules. And somebody, probably you commented on how "isn't that a normal ride?" and I pretended to be mad, and whatever, and it got away. And one RLAG gal PMed me wondering if I was upset with RLAGers (no, not at all). It was someone else who red dotted me. No hard feelings on my account, but I'm also not gonna run my life worrying that someday I might offend someone. I will, so all I can do is try to be kind in general, and try and not be toooooo offensive with my humor (knowing I'll fail once in a while).
:o
Edit: Let's take this discussion back over to Chit Chat's Dot Craze thread....

I dunno. Maybe it was you. If I didn't have this track record of never having given red dots, I'd give you one right now, just cuz! :p
