Ride Like a Girl will be at Schaeffer Farms on SUNDAY November 5, 10 am. (This is slightly different for our normal Saturday rides, but I have a trailwork day at Cabin John on the 4th.)

I'm still in need of a casual-pace leader, if anyone is interested. I can provide a good route, if you need one.

Ride Level: We will have at least two groups with leaders: a casual/beginner group and a group for more advanced riders.

Location Information: Shaeffer Farm is an extremely popular mountain biking and equestrian destination with several excellent singletrack loops covering almost 12 miles of rolling terrain. Trails offer something for all levels, but tend toward fast and smooth hardpack singletrack, with moderate climbs, and a good number of log and ramped log hops. Some technical sections will require beginners to dismount, but intermediates should find most sections rideable and challenging.

More info: http://www.more-mtb.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1205

About Ride Like a Girl (http://www.RideLikeaGirl.org): We're a group of women riders who get together for mountain biking, fun, and comraderie. Most rides are beginner-friendly, but are geared toward women who have at least a little mountain biking experience. Some rides are for more experienced riders. Rides are expected to last from 60 to 120 minutes. Depending on the size of the group, smaller groups will be formed on the basis of skill level and interest.

All riders MUST wear a helmet, bring water, and have a trail-ready bike. Riders should also carry the usual basics: spare tube(s), a pump, tire levers, a chain tool, and basic allen wrenches.

Please reply if you're planning on attending.

If any of you ladies want to bring the significant other, I will be leading a concurrent casual ride for the guys. Same time and start as the womans ride, and I'll try to get back to the lot around the same time. Pace will be nice and easy.

Count me in to for the casual ride. It will finally be nice to ride Schaeffer during the day since my only experience was a night ride. There were a couple spots where I thought I was going to kill myself. Looking forward to riding with you all again. Hopefully the weather will hold up for this weekend. I will also PM you Liz to place me on the list.

I will try to make this, depending on pedals by then, and whether I am no longer sick, I am hacking up a lung right now :(

Hey, we'll finally meet your fiancee!

You know of course that you cannot ride the dude's ride if you don't have a gilfriend/spouse/fiancee/other on the RLAG ride, right?

Btw, before you cough out all your lungs, try taking 1000mg of Vitamin C everyday. Works for me...or if you've seen the movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding", then Windex should do it for you.

Public transportation won't get you to Schaeffer Farms. I may go to the boy's ride at the same time. I could give you a lift from the Shady Grove Metro which isn't too far from the ride.

Your destination is about 20 miles to the northwest of DC, in Seneca state park (Directions can be found on the MORE schaeffer farm page here (http://www.more-mtb.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1205)). If you can make it to one of the Metro stops to the west, I could possibly give you a ride. Drop me an email if you want to discuss it, chris (at) intensity (dot) org.

I'll try to make the RLAD (Ride Like a Dude) ride. I'm working the night before (as usual), but should be home at a reasonably ungodly hour. However, all I've ridden the last few weeks has been Lower Magruder, so I'm itching to get on another trail...any other trail. I mean the squirrels and deer now say "Hi Dave!" when they see me. :p

A few friends and I are planning to start around 8:30am at Schaeffer, and plan to make an effort to join in the RLAD fun, so if you see 3 strange fellows trailing the RLAD line, its us (we'll try to be in the lot at 10am). (Chris-I'm the guy with the green reign 2 and the b&w angel tattoo on the back of my calf who you waited for on Pete's HMC ride several months ago cuz I had a bad calf cramp, not that I expect you to remember any of that :) -troy)

Not if you wear some clothes. :D

It wasn't bad today at Patapsco. We all ended up shedding some layers.

Yeah, it was super cold to start at Gambrill today, but by the end of the ride I was in a long sleeve t-shirt. Looks like similar weather tommorrow.

It looks like we are getting a mix of people on the guys ride, so I just want to note that you faster riders should wear something warm because you will be waiting a bit (and it gets cold when you stop moving). Layers that you can take off and put back on are handy.

Given that it is going to be in the 30's when we start the ride tommorrow, how does everyone feel about heading down the Hoyles Mill connector to hit the stream crossing a few times? ;) (Note: I am kidding).

Fun ride today, guys and girls! The turnout was amazing. I had 11 guys on my ride, and I think between Liz and Heidi there were 23 women. Weather was pretty nice for November, the trails were in pretty good shape. All in all, a fun ride.

We look great, don't we? :)

And of course, the highlight of the ride was that jabberwocky got a new hat.

Enjoyed riding with all the women today at Schaeffer. You were a great leader Liz. It was nice getting to meet so many new people today. Hopefully we will get to ride again in the future. Hope you feel better Dharma and Cathie after your crashes.

It should be noted my crash was post RLAG ride. So much for "lets go do another quick loop" :o

I can't decide if it's a good thing or bad thing that I smacked my ribs on the opposite side of the broken (now healed) one. It hurts like heck but I don't think I broke a rib this time.

However, I have a few narcotic pain relievers left over from the last broken rib. I think I will be taken a couple at bedtime. :)

Dharma I hope your shoulder isn't hurting too much.

Here are the stats for the RLAD ride today:

Total distance: 9.5 miles (according to TopoUSA...the Garmin only had 8.7)
Total climbing: 933 ft
Total descending: 933 ft
Total moving time: 1 hour, 25 minutes
Total time from start to finish: 2 hours, 18 minutes
Maximum Elevation: 443.1 ft, approx 1/4 mile before the end of the ride on the white loop
Minimum Elevation: 236 ft, on the backside of the yellow loop before you start heading back in.

Of course, the stats don't tell you that it was a heck of a lot of fun to ride today.

I did have my "guilty conscience" moment on the ride. I was heading downhill on the white trail after the whoop-de-doos with Dave behind me on my rear wheel. I was barrelling down pretty good until I realized I was on the verge of being out-of-control, I braked pretty hard to slow the bike to get through a right hand turn. At the same time, I hear Dave's bike crashing behind me. I was convinced that he had crashed trying to avoid me. I felt really bad about it, so I pulled up on the next hill, stopped and asked "Did I do that to you?". It turned out Dave found a tree root and washed out, without having anything to do with me. I was definitely relieved. I've got to admit, that's a weird feeling hearing a bike going down behind you, and you're not in any position to stop and/or look to see what just happened.
