Greetings all -

The ride for tonight is ON, so I'll see everyone out there! We'll be meeting by the recycling bins at 6:30, and will plan to be hitting the trails by 6:45. If you're running late, call me on my cell and we'll wait for you, or plan to meet somewhere on the trail (if you're familiar with the Wakefield network).

Pace will be casual as I have not been on the bike in a couple of weeks  :o

These days, right around 7:30 - 7:35, maybe sooner in the woods. And depending on how good your night vision is - mine sucks.

If you can hit a Performance Bike Shop on the way to the trail, this light gives out enough light to ride without being a significant purchase decision: http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=15910&subcategory_ID=4320

Ideally, though, your best bet is at least a 10W helmet mounted lighting system. Handlebar mounts are fine, too, but having the light on your helmet will allow you to see into turns earlier on the twistier trails.

jvanbrecht
October 3rd, 2006, 02:37 PM
And do do what I did.. the light I snagged from my neighbour only fits std sized handlebars, not oversized.. so where its mounted on my bike, it points to the right slightly.. so the left is completely dark.. mountain biking roulette on all left turns.. makes for an interesting ride :D

I had one of those... on steep hills I was almost blind from not being able to generate enough juice to keep the light on... on downhills, some of the cheaper ones you could blow out a light bulb from pushing too much current :)

Has anyone done any comprehensive research as to which LED kits produce candle-power equivalent to, say, a 10w or 20w halogen?

It would be good to know - those LED burn-times are outrageous....
So is durability, and bulb life...

So is durability, and bulb life...LEDs have incredibly long bulb life and durability. They'll outlive you, practically. Unlike HIDs which are incredibly fragile.

But LEDs tend to be broad and not focused. That doesn't make a good bicycle light. I have been carrying around my new Princeton Tek Apex lately in the car. I bought it for caving. It's a 3W LED headlamp. I've been curious how it would work for cycling. For an LED it's pretty focused. Unfortunately it doesn't have a good attachment to a bicycle helmet.

Thanks, Cindy, for use of the headlamp in lieu of hooking up with proper lighting prior to the ride. SG: the Tek Apex (which i handed back to jvanbr post ride) worked much better than the aforementioned...(thank you!), but not quite as good as the system that Halfinch loaned me at 830...(thank you!). Thanks to everyone who loaned out lighting units.....and thx to everyone from behind whom I whored light on the trails! Had a great ride... Big group, yikes!

PS: Can someone speak to Cindy's well-being???

uh, SG said to give you the light that's currently in your camelback..i believe that belongs to Cindy.. and i handed the Tek Apex directly to jvanbrecht post ride--he said he was to get it to the girl of squirrels. weeknight trips to WF are very few and very far between..

To Brizn, and halfinch;

Thanks for:
a. being merciful to a slow old fart while,
b. kicking my butt all over the park. :D

I hope to get faster when I figure out how to pay for a correctly sized FS frame, and
the early am ride-n-runs I'm doing with my boy start to pay off.

Slept like a baby last nite!

Thanks also for the Phase 2 (?) tour. I want to go back in the light to see where the heck we were! Maybe weekend after this coming...

Great meetin y'all,

i think LED has come a long way. there are several decent site's out there where folks have made comparisions and some decent DIY links.

if you scroll thru this link, you'll see some comparison photo's.

MTBR LED Link (http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=146529&highlight=LED+vs+Halogen)

i picked up the cateye double shot, and have been pleased with it for most of my rides. durable, nice construction, wicked long burn time, and reasonably priced.

FYI for the Tuesday night gang...

I'm going to start arriving early so I can get a few miles in ahead of the regularly scheduled ride. My goal is to get to the parking lot and be ready to ride by 5:45pm at the latest (make sure you have the proper footwear, yes I'm talking to you SG). Anyone who wishes to join me is welcome. I plan to hit the Accotink side of the lake, ride some single track over there, then ride the gravel trail back to Wakefield. The pace will be set by the slowest rider.

I'll be the guy with the red Klein bike and green Toyota Camry.

it's the triangular patch of woods above the power station bounded by the power lines and the cc gravel trail. it stays wet and is a salamander breeding area in the spring - hence the name.

Technically it's just called "Salamander".

("The Salamander" is sort of like saying, "The Bowls" or "Gambrils". Every trail around here some how gets pluralized.......... :D )

At the base/bottom of the power station - The OLD OLD Start/Finish area.

If you went across all of the stone work and board walks, it would be the small section of woods that seperates the race course from the CCT. Salamander ends just as you cross the new bridge and head into Phase I (Race course FORWARD direction). During our June rains, the small bridges we built flooded and floated away.

60-70% chance of rain on Tuesday, 10/17. Is the ride still on if it doesn't rain too much?

CRAIG2
October 15th, 2006, 03:34 PM
First things first - there's a 20% chance that the forecast for Tuesday this far in advance is actually accurate. Live here long enough and you'll come to learn that. So, yes, the ride is still on.

As a general rule, the ride will be cancelled if we get a soaking rain within 24 hours of the ride. This typically means an inch or more of rain, or possibly a steady rain the day before. I will post up a cancellation the day of the ride if weather conditions are not good, or if we've gotten too much rain Monday.

Hope this answers your question! For now, I'm looking forward to riding Tuesday and wishing I could be wrong all the time at my job. Checking the Doppler throughout the day the day of the ride is your best bet....

In this area, forecasts are useless, the weather changes quicker then a womans moods :) (no offense to any women here... ) :D

In all seriousness, this time of year is usually pretty wet, but long term forecasts are usually wrong, unless theres a hurricane coming up the coast, then whether or not the trails are open, well thats the least of the concerns.

GT sucks. ;)They're good to pose on, though. Seriously, with the i-drive system, you can put it right on top of gnaryl stuff (you know, roots and hills  ) and hop on your bike and balance just long enough for someone to take a picture. Next and Magna, same deal- great for posing.

Yeah, it's totally great being a poser. I'm one step ahead of you though - SS poser. Maybe one day I'll let you touch it, in all it's ghetto glory.

My 8 inches of travel handled it just fine, now if only my ass had 8 inches of travel since it was not on the bike when it hit the roots :D

not sure how early i can get there, but i'll get there. will want to check out the race loop - heeding Scud's warning about the trail damage, I hope Craig'll avoid any danger zones :D

So far, the ride is still on for this evening. Hopefully things are in decent shape. The only problem spots might be along the salamander section, and the fireroad between phase 1 and the upper creek trail. Possibly the section along the beltway. We'll figure it out. Anyway, I'll see everyone out there.

I will most likely not be at this ride, I have training Tue and Wed, not sure when it finishes, but its near where I live, which will be a major pain to get to by 630, I may just end up hitting Schaefer in the afternoon with a co worker after training.

Anyone planning on riding tonight? I rode last night and was a little cold until I warmed up. Time to switch to full fingered gloves...

Still sopping wet around salamander but most of the stuff we rode last Thurs was more or less dried out, still puddles on the gravel road though.

The ride scheduled for tonight is ON, so I will see whoever shows up at 6:30, hitting the trails at 6:45. Guess we'll just have to pedal a little faster to keep the blood flowing :D

Mrs MOBL will be joining Craig's group for her first night ride ever.

On Saturday's Trail Maintenance we filled in a couple of places along the board walk section and one place in Salamander. On last nights ride we avoided the quagmire I took the group through on Thursday, but almost everything else seemed to be in GOOD shape (The CCT and truck roads being the exception). I think with today's high wind the riding should be GREAT. (Fingers crossed)

I'll be playing the game from the other side of the "Welcome Mat". I'm taking the spawn around to coerce candies from the neighbors. I'll have to wait till the Thursday night ride.

Alright, I dug out the lights and I don't want to deal with Trickor Treaters, so I'll be there.

P.S. If anybody has a spare 6" hayes rear disc brake adaptor or a spare stem top cap bring them because I need these parts on a bike I'm building up.
