October 9th, 2006, 02:10 PM
Back by popular request (okay, not so many, but people seem to enjoy these rides), the casual ride at Gambrill, this Saturday. If you're not going on the MORE camping trip, there's nothing that says you shouldn't have some fun riding somewhere closer. And if you've never ridden Gambrill, consider this a chance to get a guided tour. Details:

Where: Gambrill State Park, lower gravel lot http://www.more-mtb.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1208

When: Saturday, October 14, 10 a.m.

Terrain: Rocks, rocks and more rocks. Mostly single track with some tough climbs and fun downhills... come on, you know you want to ride it! :D Plan on 8-11 miles or more if the group is game.

Pace: Casual/Moderate. A no drop ride, but I'd like to keep the group moving where possible. First timers (to Gambrill, that is) are welcome, but you should be proficient at Fountainhead/Patapasco level of riding or you may not have a good time. That being said, if you have the gumption to show up, we'll get you through it. And, the road is never far away if you decide you're in over your head.

Contact: Me, punga! (shawn) 301-675-2117 or s_punga at yahoodotcom

Standard MORE disclaimers apply, mainly, if you don't have a helmet you can't play in our reindeer games. Non-MORE members are welcome to join us.

Crashmore, can you post to the calendar? I'll send you a message as well.

Tell the fiancee to relax, Gambrill is tough, but it won't kill you. No 50 ft. hucks, no off camber cliffside riding, just a gap jump over a bridge guarded by a guy who says "Answer me, these questions 3!":p

If it's a time issue, expect the loop to take about 2 hours, depending on how much we stop.

If you follow the directions in the link, they'll take you to Gambrill Park Rd, look for the gravel lot on your right with lots of cars and a kiosk. If you get to a stop sign at the top of the hill, you've gone too far. I usually have phone reception in the parking lot. Call me if you're running behind or lost.

I tried, but it filled up before I convinced the wife to go along with the plan.

I made the Memorial Day trip at Stokesville and had a blast.

Hope you make it out Brian. Had a good time riding with you last time.

Anyone want to carpool from the Reston area? (Or anywhere between Reston and Gambril).

I just love your phrase "I'm so horrible at ________. I feel that I would make everyone hate life." That is so how I feel when I ride with others!

i will start chanting that while I practice climbing impossible hills etc etc so that I improve and it never comes true. In fact, I think I am going to make it my mantra "I'm so horrible at losing Xterra races, I feel that I make everyone hate life." Thanks for the inspiration!

That's all I wanted to say.

For Gambrill newbies on the fence about the ride, this is the Gambrill ride you want to do. Punga is a great ride leader, and he isn't going to leave people behind. If you have never ridden Gambrill, this will be a great way to learn it.

If we get a warmer, wetter winter (like the past few years), Gambrill is one of the only consistently ridable places in the area. So if your plans for the winter include riding, learning the Gambrill trails will benifit you greatly.

Hmmm... that's a good question. The Chunders will be nice on the rocks and allow you to really rip the downhills. But there is some climbing to be done out there and you may want the XC tires. You don't say what tires they are, but if they're beefy 2.1 or 2.3s, you should be fine. I run a WTB Weirwolf 2.3 up front and a Maxxis Minion DH-R 2.35 in the back. Even though the Minnion is listed as a DH tire, its smaller and lighter than most, so I use it as a beefy XC/AM tire.

If they're skinny 1.9 or 2.0s, you may want to stick with the chunders. This applies to you and everyone going along who's never ridden Gambrill: You may want to run 5 lbs more pressure than you normally do and bring at least one extra tube. Pinch flats are not unheard of in Gambrill.

You bet... as the trails get closed out from weather, Gambrill will remain one of the few places that can be ridden most of the time (and not have to worry about ducking bullets from hunters). I'd like to do these rides on a regular basis, when life doesn't conflict too much. Maybe it will get Sticky status if I can find someone else to share the leading with. I just can't commit to every Saturday morning in Frederick, but I might be able to do them every 2 weeks or something.

The weather forcast for Saturday in Frederick:

Sunny, with a high near 57. Calm wind becoming west between 14 and 17 mph.

But what's more important (at least in the morning) is the forcast for tonight:

Partly cloudy, then gradually becoming clear, with a low around 31. South wind between 5 and 8 mph becoming calm. :(

Dress accordingly and plan on warming up as the day goes on.

By my count, we've got about 8-10 people going along, is there anyone else interested who hasn't posted up yet?

I'm local, so if I'm not there right at 10am, just ride on. If I do make it, the first climb will give me some indication whether I'll continue or not. I really hope to make it though.

Chris mentioned at the overlook that it was nice to not be the youngest person on a ride for a change. Being a decade+ older than Chris, I took a look around in the parking lot once everyone took their helmets off. Only two people with wrinkles, one of them being me. To clinch my claim to geezerhood, when I got in my truck, my Yaz CD came on.

Hey Shawn, I was on the look out for a ride this weekend, but my Saturdays are all booked up for a while. Otherwise, I would have loved that ride...you know me. But I intend to ride this winter (probably more solo than I would wish) as long as theres not more than 5 or 6 inches on the ground. Hope to see ya guys out there soon.

Sorry, hate to do this as I was really looking forward to Saturday, but I have to bail out

We thought we could get an exception for emergency surgery as a reason to move your flight, but apparently not. We can't move our flight to Sunday without Spirit Air screwing us out of over $300, hence, we are going fly out Saturday.

But, not to worry: Brizn has stepped up to the plate and graciously accepted my request to lead the ride. :D So, while I won't be there, I hope you guys get a good ride in. Someone please make sure to go as fast as humanly possible on the downhills for me, please?

I promise to lead at least one more ride at Gambrill before I have my shoulder surgery at the end of the month. Afterwards, I'll be off the bike till Jan. some time. :(

If you've been to "Gambrill" (no s, two ls), and want to go back, then you're good enough for me! :)

RedClay-- you should definitely come. Everyone, not to worry about "sucking" or the word "moderate".. this will be a fun, social (though not beginner) ride geared toward an Introduction to Gambrill Park.

1 better make it or I'll be upset (SG)Willya figure out how to get the dang stuck pedals disconnected from my bike so I can put my ATACs on? And change my tires? Normal tires are easy, but these are the dang USTs with the recessed rims and the Stans. Yuck. How 'bout you, Jabberwocky? You messed with my tires and rims before. 'Member how hard it was? It took you about 20 minutes to get that tire seated. And it wasn't because you don't know how to change a tire!!!!!

Actually, as I was typing this, I got a call to say the briefing I was supposed to go to at 9 was cancelled. So that means I'll probably have lots of time to go home at lunch, get my bike and trot it over to the Bike Lane. Loren? Jay? Derek? You reading this? :) Loren tried to teach me a trick once about getting the bead way down in the middle part of the rim to get them to seat, but I'd really just rather have him do it for me.

OK, Jabs says that he'll fix my bike and I can carpool with him (though I'll try and get my bike fixed before then).

How's this for a plan? The faster-types can go in one pack, and RCR, me, and anyone else who's not quite so masterful of a rider can go around at a pokier pace. Then, since Jab will have to wait for me while I pokeyize around, those fast folks can do the green loop or something till we get back.

A plan?

I'm fine with dividing a large group! I'm def gonna ride casually, and Jbwcky'll be much swifter than me-- so maybe he'll be willing to lead those faster folk if the group splits?? I plan to stick with the majority- those folks who are new to Frederick or are generally a lil slower.

Oh, and I'm definitely int'd in tacking on another little portion after the Yellow loop. Lots of times i go down Red and back up to the lot. Or maybe down Black (South of lot) and back up Green. OOOOORRRRR--- maybe some folks would like to play around on Black from the Overlook, down! Yummy!

I'll be especially pokey as I was tonight. Just haven't had enough time pedally lately. Sigh. No way to get back at it, than to ride. So I'll be there and be pokey and it works for me to watch Jabs (Jabs and Babs--urk!) ride those obstacles!

Advanced terrain, not a beginner ride
Pace will be casual, but steady.

Brizn sent me some questions about riding tomorrow in the cold, so I thought I'd post this up for everyone's benefit. This works me, other people may have different opinions, so take it for what it's worth.

..gimme some quick advice. I've read all the cold weather threads but sometimes have a hard time synthesizing all the info. If it's gonna be cold tomorrow, i'll need to be comfortable, which means i'll need to get some gear tonight. I got some tights, and a compression wicking jersey etc for base layer.. and i have a nice balaclava. what are your upper body recommendations?? a few layers,, then a windbreaker? what's a good middle layer??
It sounds like you're off to a good start. If I was riding tomorrow, this is what I would wear, with a couple of options:

Base layer of long Trek tights and under armor type shirt. A pair of shorts over the tights because us big guys don't look so hot in the tights. Plus it ads another layer of insulation over the crotch, and you can't complain about that.

Up top, I'd have 1 or 2 more thin layers: I have a couple loose fitting poly something tops (found them in JCPenny's "sports wear" department for cheap) and my heavy Pearl or Performance riding jerseys. And then on top of that, my Cannondale windbreaker type jacket. My jacket sleeves zip off if I get warm, one reason I really like that jacket and the back is vented. I don't usually go with any kind of insulating layer like fleece because they're too bulky and I generate enough heat once I get going. I also have a pair of arm warmers and leg warmers. The arm warmers seem like over kill when I wear the stuff listed above, so I mainly use them for cold mornings in the spring or fall so I can take them off later. The leg warmers, roll down too easily and I've just about given up on them.

To me, the important stuff are my feet and hands:

Feet: one thin wool layer of socks and 2 pairs of Smart Wool socks. If i'm expecting water crossing, I have a pair of water/wind proof socks that go inside my shoes. Sounds crazy and bulky, but I can deal with it if my feet stay warm, plus I can always stop and remove a layer.

Hands: I have a pair of Louis Garneau Gloves lightweight winter gloves, not too bulky. If its really cold, I have a pair of Pearl lobster claws that squeeze over my gloves. It's tight, but my fingers stay warm and I can remove them later.

The balaclava is good, I also have a fleece lined Pearl head band that covers my ears but still fits under my helmet if it's too warm for the balaclava. I've also been known to wear both, but that gets really warm quickly.

With this set up, I've ridden in weather down into the low 20's and in the snow. (Jim Thorpe, PA gets really cold in February).

Last thing: I always have something warm to wear waiting for me back at the car. Usually a fleece pull over and a dry, warm shirt. Once you stop and its cold, all that sweat, wicking material or not, will start to get cold in a hurry.

Ya'll was the nicest bunch'a folk i done ever come cross! *spit ding*

Great ride! I think we peaked at somewhere between 12 - 14 (can't 'member) riders-- several of whom took their maiden trip around the Yellow loop today.

One flat, one chain snap, no injuries!

Ride description in brief:
RnF rode more than he fell. Jabberwocky called SG 'barb' a bunch of times. Efunky's toes didn't fall off. Julia finally found us at the apex of Yellow extender. 1der and I finally got that ride in! DaveG cleared the south side of Jedi. I was introduced to SuperFrenchie. Nocro got G-ride #2 in AND shared w/ me a very interesting conversation about chickens. Yueq had the cleanest teeth on the trail. Punga was missed. SG broke out the whip. Luic shared his very ingenious solution to keeping big group rides together at trail junctures. Karen and her friend burned trail. And Drew 'regretted' ordering the cheese fries post ride.

See you all next time!

EDIT: Drew.. you look nothing like your avatar either! :D

Thanks, Brian, for leading the great ride. Though overall, I was more pokey than usual due to my crazy summer and relatively lack of riding, I *did* clean one slightly rocky hill to the top which I'd never done before and passed two, count 'em two, people going up.

However that said, overall I was, yet again, the worst rider there.

Am I getting too repetitive with these rides? Okay, maybe a little, but I'm trying to get in what I can before I go under the knife. Scud and Brizn will be coming out to help me lead (breaking up into smaller groups if necessary so that some can go at a faster pace). I need to be on the road heading home, no later than 1 p.m. Saturday, so be sure to be there at before 10 and wheels down at 10. I will not be waiting for people if you're more than 5-10 min. late, however, Scud or Brizn may be enticed to if people are MIA. So, here it is:

Back by popular request (okay, not so many, but people seem to enjoy these rides), the casual ride at Gambrill, this Saturday. And if you've never ridden Gambrill, consider this a chance to get a guided tour. Details:

Where: Gambrill State Park, lower gravel lot http://www.more-mtb.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1208

When: Saturday, November 18th, 10 a.m. sharp.

When you get out of the metro, go toward the parking lot/bus station area. I'll be in a blue Mitsubushi Lancer with a black s-works stumpjumper hanging off the back. I've got a patch over one eye, a peg leg, and a parrot on one shoulder. ;)

Call me if you're not going to make it, etc.

The route I've found the most fun is to climb straight out the parking lot (like to get that climb out the way) up to the tea house, then parallel the road to the overlook and the going back into the woods. (across from the overlook). Stay on the yellow to yellow extension, the crossing back over the road, winding through the pine forest to the long downhill (think Brizn calls it Jedi or something Star Wars related) and then making our way back toward the cars on the same side of the overlook until we cross the road at the overlook taking the roller coaster all the back to the car. Basically the entire yellow trail and the way I like to go leads to best combination of downhiill vs. climbing.

You'll have fun.

Can I get an idea of how many people are coming out tomorrow. I 99% sure the trail will be dry enough to ride tomorrow, but I'd like to get an idea of whose coming out. By my count so far, I'm think about 10-12. If you haven't posted up or sent me an email, try to let me know today. Remember, tomorrow we will be rolling at 10 (okay, 10:05, perhaps) but I don't have a lot of time and want to get the group moving asap.

Scud, who is this ghost rider you speak of? The Ghost of Rider Leaders Past? ;)

I was looking fwd to seeing a few folks I hadn't seen in a while.. but I think splitting the group was a more prudent idea. PS: you're lucky we split the group Red, otherwise I would've told you to 'shut up' more than just the once. :p :D

BIIIIIIIIIG turn out. For real! I wonder if the various ride leaders could give a head count.. or an approx for the more add/drop rides, like RiderX's. I had 8, self included. Holla.

Next trick is gonna be associating real life names with board names.

Thanks for a great ride, Brian, and y'all in the "casual" group! Having an opportunity to ride in a group, but not too far out of my pace zone, helps me get better. Plus, that way I can see when people fall in ditches and avoid them myself ;)

Thanks go out to the many people who came out today, but I need to call out a few:

First and foremost, Brizn: Thanks for picking up the casual group at the last minute, today's huge turn out made taking one group that large (the 12 in my group, plus the 8 in yours, would have been 20  ) impossible. Brizn, karma is smiling on you. Hope I can return the favors someday.

Thanks go out to Scud and Joe for leading the other rides. Before we headed up the hill, I counted 22 people plus myself. Adding another 10+ or so at the teahouse puts us at close to 40 people on the day!

Red, Marty, Mark, Pat, Jabber, Shannon and all the others, on my ride: Great group, good pace and good vibes.

More thanks to all who showed up, these things don't work unless people show up and have a good time.

Now, over to punga! for the post ride report: We had pretty smooth ride. No major injuries, no major mechanicals (although 3 flats in the last 1/4 mile may qualify as a major mechanical, Mike A, how did you did you flat both tires at one time?). I clocked just over 8 miles and a max speed of 22. <-- Not sure where that happened. We kept a good pace and I was able to make all my family obligations on time. Thanks to the group for making that happen.

I'm looking to forward to next Friday, my last ride at Gambrill of 06

No, my Capitol Hill posse decided the 20-person group was insane so we stayed with Scud and company and went on a longish, casual ride that featured yellow, blue and Shed elements. It was a spectacular route and a great group, one of the most pleasurable rides in recent memory, despite an above average number of mechanical issues. And best of all, we arrived with one Gambrill virgin and another afraid of the 'Gill due to past difficulties, but we left with 3 people eager to return. I for one found the place very welcoming; each ride there is a little bit easier and I actually look forward to the rock gardens instead of dreading them. And the cheesburger/gyro place in Frederick (Dairy something...) was outstanding as well. Cheers!

Although I rather desperately need to get back into some semblance of shape. I love to climb but prefer to do so while on the bike, attached to the pedals.

Brizn, one of the two mysterious riders on RiderX's ride was Reid, who works at the Applied Physics Lab with me. Strong rider, and great on the downhills. The Hamburg rider was our buddy Frank, who actually intended to ride with us, but who had a brain-cramp and forgot we were starting at Gambrill, not the 'shed.

What do folks think of this?Did I miss something here, or are you asking MORE what they think of me scrubbing the mud off at your place?

Actually, after I posted up, I combed the internet up and down. Made phone calls. Was disappointed right and left. Eventually I found the City of Gaithersburg Fitness Center that only charges $5.50 for a non-resident to visit. One way or the other this should work out.

Uncharacteristically, I'm all up for a late start this time. If we start too early, we end early (even if it is 4 hours later). I get my shower, then I have to kill time until the Banquet at 7. I'll save 80 miles of driving by showering in MD, but I don't relish killing time malling or something.

Alternately, there's an indoor pool in Germantown (http://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/rectmpl.asp?url=/Content/Rec/pools/aqua_gtown.asp) , across from Schaeffer, they have full shower facilities and a hot tub :) They're open to the public 2-4 pm and it costs $7.50 for non-residents. You could see a movie (http://www.kentlandsstadium8.com/?s=K8main) while you wait...

I'm awfully good at spending other people's free time, since I have none of my own ...

If you like, you can stop in Gaithersburg and I'll give you a lift the rest of the way. lmk with a PM if you're up for that. It would save you some driving, and it would be one less car.

Say What? It's Friday night. You dang sissy.

Did I miss something here, or are you asking MORE what they think of me scrubbing the mud off at your place?

Awkward.

Maybe there could be a moderate ride at 9:62 and a more casual ride at 10:62?

The 10:60 ride will probably be a big slice of moderate with some casual sprinkled on top and follow a different line than most Gambrill only rides. I'm not trying to disuade you, but my shower day hasn't arrived and I don't want to be mentioned in the "I'm offended" thread.

No, I can't back out of this one. One of my commitments for tomorrow is to give someone a ride up there. Besides, I enjoy flirting with the rocks. They're like an abusive significant other, they always hit hard, but for some reason people keep going back.

Thanks, Liz, you'll be on my list, too! :)Aw, your ex gave the speech last year? You should have emailed him a bunch of news clippings about Bobby Kennedy (who was assassinated giving a speech). Then show up and sit in the front row, sweating, glaring at him and occasionally slipping your hand inside the bulky jacket you are wearing. See how his speech goes in the face of that. :)My best friend called me a few minutes ago. I read her what you posted. She told me how she has been doing some work for the History Channel. They asked her to do a caving show with a certain somebody because he was the "Jacques Coutsteau" of caving [his nose is similar in size, anyway]. But she responded, "He's my best friend's ex, and I can't help myself. Everytime I see him I have to make him squirm. He gets so uptight he can crack a pecan....." She felt very proud of herself not explaining exactly where in his anatomy the pecan would be located when he cracked it. Then she explained how his ego was bigger than the caves he goes in.

:D

Life is so much nicer with friends like Hazel and Chris. They make me laugh! :D

0960hrs it is.

We'll linger in the lot and pop wheelies and stuff for a while before starting the official ride- giving folks a chance to roll in. Don't forget, overflow parking atop the hill.

Right now sounds like Rider and Mrs., Liz, Nocro, Yueqing, RickyDUpIntheMuthaFizzle, Crashmore and friend, SG, 1der, Jabby, MarkyMark..and hopefully BikeElephant..

Do what I do, put on a 32 tooth in the rear and a 22 up front. It's slow, but not too painful. :D

Great leading out there Brian! Thanks for putting this together at the last minute!Well, we had 7 to start, but after realizing that Crashmore's friend was not behind us at the overlook and Crash heading back to find them, we were down to 5 (Me, Clay, Rob, Jay and Mark) and stayed that way until the very end when we picked up Chris who had dropped off Joes ride due to a flat.

Fun ride for sure.No problem. Sorry if I was holding people up on the descents. I don't think I could have gone any faster on the rigid. I never realized how much suspension helps when bombing Gambrill terrain. :o My forearms are pretty damn sore, I can tell you that.

I oped to ride along with him and come back and do the loop along with him so he didn't have to ride solo. I ended up having a great ride despite some delays..

Sorry I wasn't able to really ride with you folks. I'm looking forward to next time..

Ha! Sorry, Joe kept calling you Travis, so I did, and I don't recall you correcting us. My method of having someone remember my name is to keep calling them by the wrong name (even though I know their real name) until they get mine right. If they keep getting my name wrong, I call them funnier and funnier names. By "Ogbuawa" they'll either stop talking to me, or get mine right. :D

I think the weight of the gears are slowing you down... ;)You know, my SS is a good deal lighter than my squish bike, but I think its been a while since I've been so slow at Gambrill (especially the downhills). I don't know how you guys do it; I think I would end up with nerve damage in my hands if I rode a rigid there in a consistent basis.

Don't grip so hard and use squishier grips. Ourys are my favorite. (Keep in mind this is coming from a guy that just swapped to a shock... after riding rigid for 5 years. :o )

However, tonight I put a rigid fork on the Inbred for my ride tomorrow to see what it feels like on this bike. :p The funny thing is that it has completely changed my geometry. Hopefully I'll get used to it quickly tomorrow or else face multiple crashes.

Hopefully I'll get used to it quickly tomorrow or else face multiple crashes.I run ODI rogue grips. I've honestly never felt one that was squishier. :)

Part of the problem was probably that my tire pressure was too high. I think I was worried about pinch flatting on the rigid and overcompensated a bit (I think they were around 35 psi when they probably should have been closer to 25). I was also gripping pretty hard, but its hard to avoid that when my eyes are watering and I'm bouncing down those rock hills more or less out of control praying that my magical 29" wheels keep me from killing myself. :)

Don't worry, I'm not that smart. I'll forget all about this in a month or two and start thinking "Hey! It might be fun to take the Wily to Gambrill this weekend!". ;)

Try the regular Oury (not the ODI Lock-Ons) or the ESI (http://www.extremesteering.com/).

Proper tire pressure is key. With the rigid you have to go lower. When I put the Reba on the Inbred, I had to bump up the pressure a bunch because I tended to slam into stuff instead of finessing as I would on the rigid.

It may be a slight improvement, but I think the problem is probably my skill rather than the grips. :) I'll definitely try a lower tire pressure next time though.

How are you liking having a suspension fork on your bike? You've been a rigid guy for a while, I'd be curious to know what you think of the change.

I have ridden with Rogues. Noticeably different. I prefer Ourys.

Love/hate with the fork. Comfy on rocky stuff, allowing me to go much faster than with the rigid. Usually feels like an anchor anywhere else. I also dislike how high it's kicked up the front end. I can't put my hands any lower than they are now without changing to a lower stem (it's already flipped downward, with no headset spacers.)

I still have a lot of riding and experimenting to do. I put on a Poploc which is nice, and I should be getting a 20mm travel reducer soon.
