Anyone up for some shuttle runs at the shed? Maybe this weekend or next? I need to get my VP Free out. I'll warn ya that I'm not the fastest or most daring on this thing yet but I figure you gotta start somewhere :) Anyhow I've got a Ford Ranger that makes a pretty good shuttle vehicle...

Actually took my Transition out to EF over the weekend. I need more runs. Count me in. I have no truck, but will provide gas for trucks and gas for humans, as penance.
I am not available Saturday 9/30. But any other Sat. or Sun., I am available.

I gotta go to a wedding this Saturday, so I won't be around. I really hope you guys enjoy your runs.
If you guys plan on doing this again next weekend, I would love to go. Keep me in mind. I can bring anything but extra bikes and a truck.

Which Transition do you have? I've got a Vagrant on the way... It should be here some time this week.
I might be in for some shuttling too. I've got a pretty nice leg injury right now, (damn, dirty, doubles) but I think it should be okay by this weekend.
By the way, I've got a Chevy Avalanche.

I got a Preston. 2006 model. 4-way Swinger.
Had the frame about six months, been built up for about two. It was outstanding at EF. You will be pleased with Transition. Actually talked to Kevin earlier this year, he answered every question I had, over the phone, no less. That was awesome.
I noticed where they redesigned for the new models. Did the Vagrant remain unchanged?

I believe hunting season is still going, so riding on Saturday in the Shed is sketchy at best.
If I can get enough work done this week around the house I'll be out Sunday for my usual day of shuttling. But I may take the week off (as I did this past Sunday) since I haven't missed at least one or two days a week shuttling and/or riding resorts since June and I could use the rest.
I'll post again closer to the weekend if I'm going to be up there.

So, are we on for Saturday? Anyone want to pick a time? Early works best for me, but over the years I have learned that freeriders do not like to get out there early. :)

Its cool. Most of the MORE folks know me, but your mom doesn't, and if she watches Dateline it's understandable if she is a little paranoid. I can usually be found on the faster south side trails. But to be honest we hit them all when we ride (usually all day).
I may ride Friday afternoon if all goes well at work and I can get some stuff squared away beforehand. Another buddy has the day off so we may try to get out there.

I think the bike should be ready by next Tuesday. My LBS had to order some new parts for me because the ones from my other bike wouldn't fit.
I would bring my XC bike, but I still haven't gotten any new tires... Remember, they were all messed up from the Stan's I had in them? Maybe I'll see if I can scrounge up some old tires. If I can, I'll see ya there.

Yeah, I live about 20 minutes away so it's totally worth it to me. There's a football field next to it that has lights that sort of shine on the track. It lets you ride a little later at night. It's definitely a high intensity workout. Non-stop sprinting. I've never actually raced. I might have to try it sometime.

if you go up hamburg road (from the parking areas) to Gambril park road and make a left, it is up the park road about a mile and a half. you will see the towers on the right and a parking field on the left. a couple high speed runs and jump runs are on that side.

I've just found those trails recently and I haven't actually ridden the whole way down of any of them yet. I did ride the top half of evo and pl, plus I hiked all of evo, some of dav and a trail next to pl, don't know the name of it, it starts in the same place but it's the other side of pl from evo and dav. That's the one I'm going to try first, it seems to be the least crazy of these trails. No ramps or drops, the bottom half is still way steep, but the rocks on the steep section are a little smaller. Plus it comes out at the very bottom (below e/pl) with a nice flowing singletrack for a couple hundred yards at the end and a rideable creek crossing to the road (no portage required). pm me if you want any more details.
Unfortunately my buddies and I have to ride early, family obligations, you know the tune. But as I said, I think we're doing the dh run last so we'll prolly be up that way around 11ish.

Edit: OK, I'm counting 8 or 9 right now plus TDN's group that we might meet up with for a run or two. I'm going to adopt the unofficial role of "ride leader", and not to be a dick or anything, my first order of business is to declare that if your name isn't on this list your going to need to find your own shuttles and guide (I'll happily point you in the right direction, however) With too many people it's going to get too hard to handle logistically and there will be too much standing around deciding what to do next and not enough riding. Nobody wants that! I hope that doesn't bend anybody out of shape.

Surely there's gotta be at least one strip club your pops can chill out in in Fredneck?
I'll be riding with my usual band of merry downhillers. Will probably start around 9-ish since I have to bail out around 2 so I can get home and work on my brand new decrepit 105 year old house rehab. Joy.
Our group probably won't have room for more than a couple extra to shuttle with us, but we do have a truck and we're more than happy to show some people around. Should be a "takin' it easy" day since 8 of us local guys are headed up to Diablo next weekend and no one wants to get maimed beforehand....not that that stopped me from probably tearing my shoulder a new one last weekend, and another guy seriously scrabbling his eggs (concussion) the week before that.
Anyways, look for guys wearing armor and looking rather seasoned (by comparison to you noobs, bwahahahahahaha). Introduce yourself, we don't bite and we'll be around the same spot at the same time.
Oh and remember, if the parking lot is full don't park in front of the gate. You can park across the street just off the road (Gambril).

October 6th, 2006, 02:24 AM
I should also add the following....
Nothing against you guys but I would suggest staying away from E, PL, and a few other trails on that section of of the mountain off the east side of the gravel road. They're definitely not beginner or intermediate DH trails and are tough to enjoy/survive on a shorter travel bike (or hardtail). Feel free to ride them but I suggest you don't, and if you do then only do so when it's dry and with a local guide. And speaking of locals, shed locals who ride those trails several times a week on full downhill bikes injure themselves there with some frequency which should speak to their difficulty.
Also, they're not in the best of shape. The shore-style structures on a couple are quite sketchy, bordering on rickety. Other trails have deadfall completely crossing the trail that needs chainsawing to remove. On E there are several places that even I, as a trailbuilding noob, would suggest need serious work before they are even stable to ride (i.e. rocks and boulders not chasing you down the slope). Taking a load of brake-dragging riders down them isn't such a great idea on any trail, especially those that are basically directly down the fall-line.
Anyhow, my comments shouldn't be taken as arrogant or elitist since that's not the intent. Just an informed warning. Those who know me, and know me from other forums, know that I'm all about getting more people into DH/FR and open access/discussion about the Shed, however I don't want people getting hurt.
Final word: they're trails that are difficult to walk down, and once you've ridden a lot of DH trails you start to realize that classes them as rather high up the food chain in difficulty and consequences. There's plenty of trails elsewhere in the Shed that you can shuttle and have a good time on, and I would suggest being completely comfortable with them before tackling others.

October 6th, 2006, 08:39 AM
Great points. Given the rain I have been reconsidering the DH run for my crew. We're not shuttling multiple runs like urbaindk plans to, but we were going to do a one-way shuttle ride with one DH run at the end (leaving a vehicle at the bottom and ending the ride there). Although we are a bunch of pansy-ass XC'ers we do have more skillz than the average joe, but even so I was only considering doing the least sketchy of the three top-to-bottom runs I've been on. But the trails being just a little bit wet can seriously increase the sketch factor.

I'm with you man and I take no offense to your comments. They are all valid. I was planning on starting over on the south side and seeing how the group does, then make decisions from there. Most likely we'll move over to the drop trails after that and maybe play around in the bowl over by the ponds. I've walked E and know it's stupid steep. I'm pretty sure I'd be fine riding it but I don't know about everybody else. PL not so much. From what I've seen that trail just looks retarded. We'll be smart, don't worry. I'm sure we'll see you out and about Sunday.

The rain makes the steep trails pretty dangerous. Combine loose terrain and poor trail building techniques (not removing topsoil, leaving moss on rockslab rolldowns, slimely deadfall you think you can clear but slide off of, etc) and you get some nasty results.
The rest of the trails are perfectly fine even immediately following a rain, or in the rain as the case may be. The Shed drains quite fast and seeing as there only seems to be about 2 tablespoons worth of dirt on teh whole mountain, the rest being rocks of various sizes, you can go just about anywhere with good traction in the wet on the established trails.
According to weather.com it should be sunny and mild though, so it'll be fine on most runs.

No offense taken, I for one appreciate the heads up / warning. I've done a bunch of other runs there but haven't tackled E or PL as of yet. I'm a solid technical XC rider but as a beginner to DH/FR I'm well aware of my limits :)
I have a feeling Sunday's group may be pretty varied skill wise.
The club needs more folks like you to help encourage folks looking to give DH/Freeride a try.

If the MORE Forum gets much more turn-out on these freeride/downhill/shuttle days I have the distinct feeling there's going to need to be a sticky'd thread titled "On the Bench - Injuries List" like I've seen at other local forums. Oof, ow.

Just to point out...
He crashed on one of the easiest (if not the) easiest trails in the area, not one of those that I suggested people stay away from as beginners, and that the trail itself included no built up structures, stunts, or otherwise, and is (believe it or not) a long established trail that mountain bikers did not cut (and one that is actually on maps).
Healing vibes to Pirate. He'll no doubt have some serious titanium metalwork by the end of the evening if it was a double break indeed.

Alright, I'll post more details later on this subject, but I just want get this out there right now... The accident that I had today, could have happened anywhere. It was pretty much a fluke. It didn't have anything to do with FR/DH or anything like that. It could have just as easily happened at Schaeffer or Patapsco. My foot just happened to get caught on a root or branch or something, and it twisted it.
I also want to give a HUGE thank you to everyone who helped me out. I especially want to thank Urbaindk and Crashmore, who hung out with me at the hospital way longer than they needed to. It really made a difference and helped to take my mind off of the pain. THANKS A LOT GUYS!!!

I'm just glad to have been able to help. I know first hand how much it sucks sitting in a hospital by yourself and wouldn't wish that on anyone...
I'd have to agree that it was just really rotten luck it could have happened to any of us anywhere.... Definately had nothing to do with the trail itself or the type of riding we were doing at the time. It does serve as a reminder that this is an inharently dangerous sport. Accidents happen from time to time. When they do we can only hope we're as fortunate as we were today.
Keep us informed as to your progress and heal up soon buddy.

Pirate, sorry to hear you got banged up, hope you heal well and fast! It's funny, all this talk about DH/FR trails and some random accident happens on a "regular" trail.
I was hoping to meet up with you guys yesterday but it didn't work out (obviously) -- my crew didn't end up riding the steeps anyway, we hiked to the bottom and checked it out, damp trail, wet leaves, mossy rocks, a little too sketchy for us mere mortals (at least that day).
Anyway, get well soon...

The Scoop! This is my version of events. If I didn't give credit where credit was due, I apologize, I was running on adrenaline....
It was an awesome morning, blue bird skys, crisp clear air, perfect riding weather. When I pulled into the parking lot at 10 til 10, Jason Reckner, pie, their buddy Leon, crashmore, and dcrider and his little brother were already there. Jason and his crew were already suited up and ready to ride, as were dcrider and his brother so they all took off for the first run, while crashmore and myself waited for pirate and jayem to show up. Pirate and jayem showed up a few minutes later. We geared up and sent pirate to the bottom to pick us up for the first shuttle. The first run was a little slow as it was still really slick from Saturday's rain. Some of the little log crossings up on the pedally "Lance Armstrong" section were covered in slime and almost everyone had 1 minor crash on a log at some point during the day. Next we headed down Piperun and hit the jumps.
After one more run both groups ended up at the bottom together and we merged. Nine bikes and bodies piled onto Jason's truck. From then on it was 8 riding, and one rider selflessly giving up the chance to ride to instead shuttle. We stuck to the south side and I think we hit all the trails there were to hit and we hit them repeatedly, stopping at various spots to session jumps. As the conditions got drier as the day went on, the riding got faster and faster. The group was pretty strong and no riders seemed out of their element. To the contrary, everyone was having a blast and grinning ear to ear.
I was really impressed with dcrider and his little brother. These two kids could really tear it up. Here's my only decent picture of the day. Here's dcrider really boosting out of a little kicker. The kid was on fire.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y38/urbaindk/Misc_junk/dcrider.jpg
As the day was drawing to a close we decided "just one more run." Famous last words. I think it was crashmore who said to me in the parking lot, "It's been a great day, no injuries, no major mechanicals." I don't think we even has so much as a flat up to this point (besides Leon who ripped his rear-d off early in the day and went home), but I knew we were jinxed then. Who was it going to be? Pie was running shuttle, jayem, dc rider and his brother went home. It was down to 5, Jason Reckner, me, pirate, crashmore and another guy who had joined us for the last couple runs. (dude, sorry in the heat of things I forgot your name! we'll call you bulletguy for story telling's sake.)
I was feeling pretty tired so I hung off the back of the group with bulletguy. The ride order was Jason Reckner, pirate, crashmore, me, and bullet guy. We took off down "Lance Armstrong" regrouped at the fireroad and then regrouped again at the intersection of dirty hippy and pipe. Pirate asked me if I wanted to go in front and I said "no man you're tearing it up I don't want to slow you down." So he and Jason took off and the rest followed. Soon after dropping in we ran into a group of guys driving Jeeps up dirty hippy. We had to maneuver around them and continue on. We had passed them a few times earlier in the day about them being up there "tearing up the trails" etc. We were about to eat those words.
A little trail description is in order here. Dirtyhippy is an washed out, old logging road. It's basically one big rut / halfpipe carved down the mountain. It's a very flowy trail and the general idea is that you carve back and forth between the berms on each side of the rut all the way down. It's really fun and fast and not too technical. It's one of the few trails in the shed that is actually on USGS topo maps (as an old roadbed).
Crashmore got there first, slammed on his brakes and started yelling for me to stop. I screeched to a halt to find pirate lying in the middle of the trail screaming that his leg was broken. It only took a quick glance to confirm this. His ankle was visibly displaced by about one inch and his foot was pointing one way while his leg was pointing in another way.
Thinking quick, I told crashmore to run back up the trail to find the guys in the jeeps and tell them we needed to evacuate somebody as fast as possible. While crashmore ran back up the trail, I got pirate to move a little so his feet were elevated above his head so he wouldn't go into shock and tried to keep him calm and still until the jeeps got there. Crashmore and the first jeep were back in maybe 5 to 10 minutes. Pirate emphatically stated that we must splint his leg before putting him in the jeep. So I went and found two sticks of appropriate length and got two spare tubes and together crashmore and I splinted his leg. Crashmore wrapped while I held pirate's leg and foot. I've never held a broken leg before. Let me tell you it is weird. Basically, his foot and leg were no longer connected and I had to be really careful to move them as a unit.
After we had splinted him, crashmore and myself picked him up and carried him (with lots of help) to the waiting jeep. Got him in, buckled him up and sent him on his way. The jeep guy, the true hero of the day drove him the hospital. I think we had pirate to the hospital in under an hour, I'm guessing.
We cleaned up the yard sale and made sure all gear was accounted for. I was given the unenviable task of calling pirate's wife to deliver the bad news. We regrouped dismissed everybody we didn't need. I drove pirate's truck to hospital and bulletguy drove me back to pick up my own truck while crashmore hung out in the ER with pirate. When I got back, I shook crashmore's hand, sent him home and stayed with pirate until his wife and a friend were able to come and pick him up.
Pirate will have to fill you in on the exact details of the injury, but from looking at the x-rays, it looks as if he has a spiral fracture of the fibula very near the end of the bone at the ankle. Best we could piece together was that pirate got loose on a little jump veered slightly off course and clipped a cut-off tree with his left foot. It's the kind of thing that could happen to any of us at anytime, at any place.
Pirate is a good rider. I've been riding with him about once a week all summer. He pushes hard and in the time I've ridden with him I have really seen him progress. It was pirate's first real ride on his new frame and all we talked about in the waiting room was bikes, riding bikes and riding more bikes. Let's all wish him a speedy recovery so he can get back up and keep on riding.

I was thinking last night about how much of a gong show the ride was. It was a very fun day of riding but we definitely racked up a bit of an injury list by the end of the day for both bikes and riders.
1x concussed rider getting dizzy from the flickering light in the wooded singletrack
1x rider coming off big kicker cockeyed and running off the trail and over a bike
1x one-hander to one-handed-landing-chin-to-bar-interface
1x 30mph highside to lawn dart head-knee-hip-ribs-to-ground-interface
2x highspeed shoulder to tree impacts
2x broken rear derailleurs
1x broken hanger
1x broken leg or ankle
As the owner of the lawn-dart move I can tell you that I think I blew out something in my knee which is now locking out with a sharp pain if I put too much weight on it, my face (around my eye) and head is bruised, my ribs are bruised, I have a minor case of whiplash, and my hip is very badly banged up (bruise will be coming up soon). But yeah, I escaped relatively unscathed in the scheme of things and the day had far fewer mechanicals than I'm used to.
....and now that I think about it, Pirate was the only one from the MORE group to crash or get hurt, it was mostly us seasoned locals who were pushing harder that ate it. Heh.

Oh yeah, these words should never be uttered while downhilling:
"One more run"
"I'm going to make it today without a crash!"
"This is my last run"
"Are you okay?"
"Hey, watch this!"
Should have explained the rules to you guys better maybe. ;)
I had a great time riding with you guys and hope to see more of you out on our usual Sunday rides. We don't generally organize per se, but if the weather is decent (above 50 or so and not raining) we ride those trails and a bunch of others, same place same time. If you're curious just PM me and I'll let you know if someone is going to be around.
Next weekend 9 of us are going to Diablo for the "last hoorah of the season" before all the resorts close. Almost guaranteed to be a gong show if Sunday was any indication of how us season-long downhillers have been getting a little big for our britches.

X-rays are best done by putting them onto a light box and then take a picture of them with a digital camera. I'm not sure if they'll work on a scanner but they may since there's a white background.
I'm surprised they haven't already rebuilt your leg. Definitely don't let them give you any external fixator, very very bad and old fashioned. My mom was in a car accident 14 years ago, had her tibia and fibia both shattered when someone running a redlight hit her head-on while she sat at the light minding her own business. They put a Ti rod from her knee to her ankle the same day (at Hopkins). The fibia didn't heal for a couple years however and needed a secondary surgery to put a plate in there with 6 screws.
Good surgeons: Dr. Byank (sp?) at Hopkins and Dr. Brumbach at Union Memorial. The former did my mom's rod, thet latter did her plate. The latter is a total a-hole with absolutely Marine Corps style bedside manner (i.e. get out of that bed and walk, it's only been 1 day after surgery!) but is without a doubt one of the best in the country.

My fiance told me I could never get another motorcycle.. she said its too dangerous, now she seems to be realising that MTBing might be just as, if not more dangerous heh. I guess the only difference is that with MTB its your own mistake or stupidity that hurts one, which motorcycles, its the other idiots stupidity that gets you killed.

Instead of a titanium plate do they have the option of a carbon plate with hollow ti bolts? So what's the story lads? Anyone actually managed to get a ride going since our big show that ended with a nasty broken leg?
I haven't been around since the week after that ride since life off the bike has become more hectic. House to rehab. Work. New girlfriend. More work. Etc. In fact my bike is still in the basement sitting with mud caked on it from Diablo where we rode the weekend after the MORE ride we did up at the Shed a while ago.
I wouldn't mind trying to get a ride together but the days are short and cold and ol' Jason (JYETI) moved back to Michigan so we don't have the swanky Shed Shuttle we ran all season this year. Bumma'. Not that it'll keep us from finding someone else to shuttle. Hehe.

I wouldn't mind trying to get a ride together but the days are short and cold and ol' Jason (JYETI) moved back to Michigan so we don't have the swanky Shed Shuttle we ran all season this year. Bumma'. Not that it'll keep us from finding someone else to shuttle. Hehe.

I've been doing the XC thing too. and I'm barely finding time to squeeze that in. Christine's due in less than a month. Things are hecktic, getting ready for the baby and I can't afford any injuries right now...

My name is Giuliano, I am an intermediate begginer dowhill rider (but I don't skipp jumps) I ride a Bullet with 7" suspension. I am looking for people to do shuttle runs with, I don't have a truck yet but I plan to buy one soon. I'd like to participate in this runs with you guys.

Is this section doable on a hard tail? If so, my brother has a car that can hold 7 people and 7 bikes and we might be interested

i am interested but one problem i do not have transportation... i live in dc and can take metro if anyone is willing to pick me up. i just moved here from california last fall and my car is still back there. will not have my car here til the summer when my wife moves here.
i have been on a couple of MORE rides and was grateful of some who were willing to pick me up and drop me off at the metro.

at 10 - lets meet at the radio towers and see where we might want to go from there
edit- Ok, there are 2 people coming with me. is anybody else going to be there and what if any vehicles will you have? if we dont have any shuttle vehicles it will be a drop trail ride rather than a fast trail and drop trail ride.

Yeah, the family ended up at Patapsco watching daddy ride the jump trail stuff. The kids were pretty impressed. They had a great time in the woods.
It's hard to find an entire day.

Yeah id be down helping with that if i can get some community service hours.

You can get community service hours for sure. I'd love to go to local high schools and ride a bike off the stage, show videos then ask them to volunteer for trailwork. Hook, line...
We have a meeting at Patapsco tomorrow. We probably won't move anything forward, but it will be an indicator of where things are going. More specific and actionable info in Feb.

If anyone is doing shuttle runs this sunday I would like to join in. I would go saturday morning too, just as long as I can get back in time to watch the ravens game. I don't have a truck for shuttling, but can provide gas/gatorade. This'll be my first time riding the trails so hopefully someone that knows the lay of the land wants to go. :)

not a good weekend to go to 495. if its at all wet people will give you a hard time for riding those jumps. maybe the next weekend after this.
