Not to worry we will be having more night rides in the near future. I'm trying to get 2 or 3 on the books for October and we'll see what November brings.
Missing a Schaeffer night ride for Colorado isn't so bad though. Hope you do get a ride or some climbing in.

Schaeffer Night Ride Is Full
Our 20 rider limit has been reached. Everyone who emailed me and got a reply is officially registered for the ride. I will take a few (3 to 4) more people on a "Stand-By" basis; however, there is no guarantee you will be able to ride. If you are put on stand-by and we get a no show, you are golden.
Now to the riders who have registered, if you can't make it and know you can't before the ride, please let me know ASAP. This way I can make sure we fill the ride to capacity.
Thanks,
Todd

Is there a possibility of a weekend night ride? I can't make weekday evening rides but would love to try a night ride.
We haven't done weekend night rides (to my knowledge) because it's easy for most people to get a ride in during daylight hours. Also, for me the weekends are my days to get long rides in. Trying to set up a 4+ hour night ride would be a daunting task when you consider the differences in rider ability. One more thing to consider is that Schaeffer has a hard set close time of 10 pm. So, if someone wanted to get in an epic night night of over 4 hours you would probably need to add the HMC and Black Hills which means getting permission from those park authorities. I think you can see where I'm going with this. :o
Now, if someone wanted to setup a weekend night ride at Schaeffer I think that would be great. Remember though that it would have to be a MORE ride where it is open to the riding public and on the calander.

Just a quick reminder about the Schaeffer night ride this Thursday. For those of you that RSVP'd and are registered, please let me know if you cannot make the ride. Hey Todd,
Siince we already asked, I would probably give him a call today and see what he says. If he (or the other rangers) have already called around to the neighbors and taken steps toward the nightride, I think we are obliged to go. It would probably REALLY make him mad that we not ride after he went through the trouble of contacting anybody who would otherwise be calling the cops/ park and then we ended up not going.
If, on the other hand, he hasn't done anything yet and it will be a hassle for him to make the calls at this point in time, then perhaps we "head him off at the pass" and deep six the night ride.
Just my $.02

Is the one house that borders Scheaffer ( the driveway you cross on the white trail) the reason why the Rangers have to call? So that person know we are going to be there.

I believe there are others, including the house across the street from the white loop (across from the farm field you have to climb up, before you enter the woods with all the pine trees). There may be others.

Is there a way we can get a schedule set up (thursday nights) so we don't have to bother the ranger every week or so. If you stayed of that section of white he would not need to call anyone.

Probably the biggest concern is the house on the corner as you enter the parking lot. No matter where you ride, that will be a problem.
But, I think your suggestion to set up several dates at once might work--to the extent that the Park has given its OK for several rides. But that is between Todd and Ranger Powell, so I'll leave it at that and not get in the middle.

I plan to call him today. I agree that if he goes through the trouble and we don't ride he could get a bit perturbed. If he hasn’t done anything yet and needs more time I don't see that as a problem either. All we do is plan on a regular Thursday ride and tell everyone to bring lights. In the event we get permission at the last minute we extend the ride into the night. If we don't get permission then we just ride until dark, easy. I'll have all the appropriate waivers in case we can ride.
I’ll also ask him if there is any way we can get a standing request for every Thursday. I agree with Crashmasta that it would be easiest for all parties involved. However, Ranger Powell may not see it that way. Either way it never hurts to ask.

We may have other problems tonight..................
...SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS POSSIBLE DURING THE LATE AFTERNOON AND EVENING HOURS...
THERE IS A SLIGHT RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ALONG A SHARP COLD FRONT WHICH WILL BE CROSSING THE APPALACHIANS DURING THE MID AFTERNOON...REACHING THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AROUND MIDNIGHT. THIS TIMING PLACES THE HIGHEST RISK OF SEVERE WEATHER ALONG THE INTERSTATE 95 CORRIDOR DURING THE EARLY EVENING HOURS. THE PRIMARY RISK OF SEVERE WEATHER WITH THESE THUNDERSTORMS IS LOCALIZED DAMAGING WIND GUSTS.
RAINFALL ALONG THE COLD FRONT IS EXPECTED TO BE TORRENTIAL. WHILE IT WILL ONLY LAST ONE TO TWO HOURS...WHEN COMBINED WITH THE BREEZY CONDITIONS THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING...LEAVES WILL BE CAPABLE OF CLOGGING STORM DRAINS...INCREASING THE RISK FOR LOCALIZED FLOODING IN URBAN AREAS.
RESIDENTS SHOULD PLAN FOR GUSTY WINDS THIS AFTERNOON AND A BRIEF PERIOD OF HEAVY THUNDERSTORMS DURING THE EVENING.

I just checked the storm out on radar. (a) it is moving really, really fast and (b) it looks pretty big. The downside is that I think it will get here in time for the ride and it will also last long enough to rain us out if we get a direct hit for any of the particular cells (I am thinking about an hour of torrential rain if our luck is bad). The upside is that since it is moving so fast, that will limit the amount of rainfall we would otherwise get if it were moving slower, we may also not get a direct hit--in which case we would get a whole lot of wind, but little rain.
Gotta admit--this one is moving fast and looking at the temps behind it, represent a huge temperature gradient. I wouldn't be surprised if there were tornados associated with this storm.

I am going to try and make it out there for 6:30 but could be a little late.
I will be in a silver xterra.
Scott,
I will bring the SS for you to check out. If you decide you want it there is also an xtr wheel and a shorter bar stem that I am throwing in for free. I will bring both.

Hey Guys and Gal,
Let this thread rotate off of the board. If you look up above there is a Sticky called "Sticky: October Thursdays @ Scheaffer ". (Spelling mistake and all)
Each month we will start a new Sticky. This way the threads don't get so large that you can never find any thing.

The night ride at Schaeffer was another huge success with one exception. While trying to keep warm in the parking lot, RiderX dinked on his bike and dislocated his elbow. Pretty badly from what I understand. Punga was already to take him to the emergency room when Liz stepped in to offer her services. Big thanks to the both of you for your willingness to help out a fellow rider. Another example of what makes this club so great! :)
The ride itself was the usual good fun. We had three groups; Prez elect James and hophead shared the lead for the fast guys, Punga took the lead on a "casual moderate" group and I lead out the casual pack. Punga, I can't seem to say this enough...thanks again! The weather was a little chilly in the parking lot, but the sky was clear and it was an awesome autumn evening. All the riders were back to the lot by 9:15 where we promptly made our way to DogfishHead. The 90 minute IPA was flowing and the glasses were raised to our fallen comrade, RiderX. Joe, get well soon. I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say our thought's and healing vibes are with you. The "Assault on Avalon" may have to wait a few weeks. :D
The night ride will be back on the 26th and it's a Halloween themed ride. Wear your spookiest costume (or any costume) or you'll be buying a round at DFH

Yes, thanks to Liz my ambulance driver, Crashmore for taking my bike home and Punga offering to transport me to the ER. Doc says I should be back to normal quickly (physically, not mentally) and on the bike even sooner. Took him a bit of work to rearrange my arm back to it's normal form, but he seemed to know what he was doing.
Not sure which hurt more, my elbow or my ego!

Sorry to not call you but never made it up to Schaeffer tonight. Never realized until I turned back around and got home that Baltimore had a gas leak downtown. They closed down several roads so traffic was horrific all over the downtown and on the freeways. I sat in stop&go traffic for 45mins to only make it 6 blocks in my car and then finally give up. I am really bummed not making it up to ride with you all but today wasn't meant to be. Hope you all had a great time riding tonight.

Big thanks to Princeton Sports for donating the water bottles. And I'm already thinking about what to have out there next year. I've been told that the props all need to be much closer to the ground, I guess so that riders don't kill themselves and the person in front of them looking up. Did anyone even SEE the vampire bat?
I'm thinking about leaving the severed arm in that log hop  ....

I had fun, albeit a boatload of problems.. halloween rides and me.. just dont mix. I had to work late, in the rush to get to the trail, I forgot a few key components at home, named the larger adapter I have to mount my unreliable light to the stem (the stock one is too small). I manage to ghetto rig it up (or would you all prefer using redneck engineering :D instead if ghetto) but it kept coming loose. The loaner that Cathie lent me at that point worked great, but the battery died about 30 min later (Thank you Cathie), and then my left SPD broke.... on the bright side.. no major falls and spills and no dmg to my body.
Thanks to Todd and all who escorted me back to the parking lott :) I did have fun, honest... of course afterwards made the mistake of checking my voicemail and had to go deal with some personal issues.. I should just leave the phone at home... I really wanted to go to DFH...

Oh heck, I may as well weigh in with my round of "thanks" and "had a great time".
First and foremost a great big thanks to Princeton Sports for donating the water bottles for all the riders. Kinda cool that we had pink ones for the ladies :D
Secondly, a huge mahalo to Liz for filling the bottles with candy, supplying the glow sticks, decorating the woods with all those scary things and all the other things you did without actually making the ride. The laughing skull was my favorite and I never saw the beating heart...oh well.
A thanks to all the ride leaders who got all 20  riders safely through the woods.....Punga, Scott, James and Sid (sorta...get your buddies a watch).
It was great having so many people wearing costumes and really having fun with the ride. That's what these things are all about people :D Oh and the award for "Best Costume", hands down must go to Cathie. I wish all of MOREdom could have seen her dead hooker themed costume with all the glow sticks, spiders and everything else that went into it. Truly an inspired costume. I'm sure a few satellites were tracking her movement throughout the night.
Thanks to all our new riders and all our vets. Also, thanks to our waitress.....Emily/ Erin(??)whoever, at DFH for being ever so attentive and speedy with our beverages. We couldn't have re-hydrated (properly) without her.
See you all next time,

DFH has some competition up north. No Chicory on tap--no problem. Went to B&H yesterday for a few. Todd, I think this stuff is right up your alley:
Schifferstadet Stout - Classic dry Irish. This stout is made from highly roasted malts used for color. Oats are also added for an extra creamy mouth feel. With coffee and chocolate aromas, this ale is very flavorful, but don’t be fooled by color, dry Irish stouts are always very light in body.
I felt like I was cheating on DFH, but hey, if they ain't delivering the goods.

At this point it is not looking good for the ride tomorrow. It is still raining and I don't see any sign of "drying out". Even if the sun were to miraculously appear in the next few hours, Schaeffer usually needs a full two days to really dry from this type of rain. Heck....I had a pond in my backyard this morning and I've never seen that before.

I know people are going to call BS to this, but the trails are in good shape. They are wet in all the usual places but not any wetter than usual. Some of the turns are a little slippy, however that is because of the wet leaves, not the soil.
I rode white counterclockwise until the orange connector to the yellow trail. Took yellow clockwise up to the 4 way with blue and then continued on yellow for a little bit. Turned around, went back to the 4 way and out on blue towards the playground. From there I went towards the lot on the outer yellow around the cow fields. It was only on this last section of yellow that I encountered any real soft spots. A couple puddles, but nothing terrible.
Believe me I didn't expect to see the trails look as good as they did. There is a layer of moister between the top and the bottom leaves and this accounts for any loss of traction one may feel. Also, it makes some of the turns a little hairy, but again, it's the leaves, not the dirt. Overall my bike and I were cleaner than the ride I did at the shed over the weekend.

I was supposed to have some folks over for dinner tonight, but they all cancelled out on me. I'm especially POed because I had the afternoon off, and I could have been riding in the brilliant sunshine instead of trying to coordinate for nothing (not to mention and the time and $$ at the grocery store last night). :(

I haven't kicked all the Gambrill night ride dirt off my bike and you guys are clamoring for Schaeffer Night rides. To be honest I haven’t thought about the Schaeffer Night rides much as we may have issues just filling ride leader spots for the Thursday rides.
Personally, I can swing one night during the week to ride. Any more cuts into family time and the good graces of SWMBO. When we organize the Night Rides we need to decide on the night and frequency of the rides. Also, we are going to need people who can commit to leading rides on a regular basis. Basically, we need to get all the Schaeffer regulars together and formulate a plan for the year. :D

We desperate for good dry trails after a long, miserable, wet winter (OK - the first half of winter was nice, but we're at the tail end of the second half, and it was sucky).
I might be suckered into, er, I mean, happily volunteer for leading super casual once per week. I really burned out on the drive to Wakefield, but if I'm stuck with a horrible drive no matter what, maybe Schaeffer would be a nice variety for me.
Anyway, forgive us for being anxious for our rubber to hit the dirt! :D Let us know, and maybe you can get enough volunteers!

Just checking to see if there is any local interest in reviving this thread. I volunteered my services as a ride leader back in March (I have never "formally" led a ride, but I lead friends around Schaeffer pretty often), but that was the last post to this thread. It sounds like the Thursday Schaeffer rides have been getting good turnouts, but not so much for the Little Bennett night rides (at least not yet). I was interested in the Little Bennett night ride, but it looks like it is not happening this week...so I was wondering if a Schaeffer night ride would draw more interest? It could either be after (or perhaps instead of?) the regular Scaheffer Thursday night ride...maybe once a month? Every other week?
Lastly...does anyone know if there are any restrictions on night riding on the Hoyles Mill Connector? If not, I was thinking about taking a spin there on Thursday or Friday night after dark if there are no other Maryland night ride option this week.

The days are getting longer, so there will most likely not be any real night rides at Schaeffer for a while. It would cut into valuable drinking time. :D
To my knowledge, there has never been a Hoyles Mill night ride. I don't know that there is much interest in riding that trail at night. It is also been my understanding that approval from multiple authorities would be required, making it very difficult to organize.

We'll be doing the Schaeffer night rides again, just not for a little while. The days are plenty long and you have to be out of Schaeffer no later than 9:45. That would give us about 1 hour of actual "night riding" with lights. Just not worth it.
We do these night rides when the days are too short for a decent weekday ride. They usually start up late summer, early fall and run until the gates close for the winter.
Hope this helps,
Todd

MNCPPC regulations prohibit night use of most parks (including Hoyles) without a special use permit. We are able to ride in Little Bennett because they are more open to night use since camping is permitted. We're hoping that the experiences there improve the possibilities at other MNCPPC parks.
