Anne Morgan, who started Ride Like a Girl in Richmond (the inspiration for our own RLAG), has invited us to join RLAG-Richmond in a joint ride at Fountainhead on Saturday, September 16. This was originally going to be an Avalon ride, but it's the only weekend in September both RLAG's have free (which is pretty cool, actually!). So.... we're going to do things a little differently this time: One, we're going to have an associated ride for the guys, led by Scott Scudamore, AND we're going to have a picnic afterwards. So, if you've got a dude who rides, bring 'em along (and bring a dish to share while you're at it!)

Date and Time: Saturday, September 16, 10:30 am

Where: Fountainhead Park, Fairfax, VA. This is an intermediate level park (the August 2001 issue of Bike Magazine described Fountainhead as "some of the region's most challenging singletrack.") Squirrel Girl says: "Fountainhead has lots of hills. In fact, there is nothing flat there at all. Also, there are roots, roots, roots, and more roots. Plus a few rocks. It's not very technical, but it's relentlessly minorly technical, and it's continually up and down. It takes me nearly 2 hours to ride the full loop and I ride often (if slowly). Word to the wise. You shouldn't come if you're brand new to mountain biking, but if think miles of ups and downs and roots would probably be OK, then come on along!"

Fountainhead is located at 10876 Hampton Road, Fairfax Station, VA 22039. ADC Northern Virginia Street Map page 26, grid E7. N 38? 43.453' W 077? 19.787'.

Pace: We'll have Pokey (led by Squirrel Girl), Casual, and Moderate. WE NEED LEADERS for Casual and Moderate. If you know Fountainhead at all, PLEASE help us out on this one. Anne will lead one group, but probably doesn't know the park all that well, so will need a co-leader. I can't lead a group, since I don't know the park and I've volunteered to help out Scud.

Picnic: If you are planning on staying for the picnic, please bring a side dish to share! Scud and the guys are doing burgers and dogs and maybe some fries (!!!), Anne's group is bringing a little bit (but they have a longer drive than many of us do), and I'm bringing a huge pasta salad, but we need lots more. So please help out if you can.

Follow FURNACE RD/VA-611 for 1.0 mile. Turn SLIGHT RIGHT onto OX RD/VA-123 for 1.2 miles. Turn LEFT onto HAMPTON RD/VA-647. Fountainhead is 3.1 miles on the left.

PLEASE RSVP if you are planning on coming, so we can have an accurate count for Chef Scud.

Thanks, Liz

Liz!

I'm planning on coming out on the 16th - this will be my first time joining the group. Looking forward to meeting everyone and to the picnic as well. I'm new to mtb - but have been on a handful of rides - including in AL, CO and at Schaeffer. My friend said I should be fine with the pokey or casual group. Is there anything else you need - or can I just show on Saturday? I will bring a dish to share at the picnic.

Thanks,
Dharma

Are you still working for ride leaders on Saturday? My wife and some friends will be coming down for the picnic and I can lead a casual/moderate ride if you need help. I'm pretty familiar with FountainHead so I shouldn't have any problems finding my way around. I would keep a casual pace or a little faster based on the group and I'd be willing to go out on the fartherest loop, which works out to somewhere around 10 miles if I remember correctly.

I will be leading one group of men/non-RLAG women. If you want to take a faster group that would be great.

I missed your calendar posting about leading a ride. Unless Liz or you request otherwise, I'll just plan on showing up and if there is a need for a another ride leader, I'll be happy to help out. Otherwise, I'll tag a long with your ride. My better half is going to do Barbara's pokey ride and our other friends are likely to tag a long with me.

If you are coming to the ride and plan on eating afterwards please reply to mtbmore@comcast.net so I know how many potatoes to buy. I have about 15 lbs now but that will not be enough if we get more than 10-12 people.

I'm planning on coming out for the ride, just in case you need a head count. Won't be sticking around for the picky-nicky.

As of midnight ride is still on. I will check the trail hotline at Fountainhead in the morning. I will post the info in the morning. We are expecting over 30 people for the ride and picnic afterwards. If you want to check the park on your own the number is 703 250-2473

Scud*Sometime*! :D Us Pokey womens won't be back to the picnic ground before 12:30! :D

I got a cake in the oven right now. New recipe. Hope it comes out OK. Bought a kayak yesterday, so I didn't have time to spend planning/baking anything special.

Great ride everyone! We had about 30-35 riders, in four groups. MANY THANKS to ride leaders Squirrel Girl, Stacey, Julie G and Punga; to all the Richmond folks for coming up here; and especially to Scud, Mrs. Scud and JoeP for preparing lunch. The fries were great! And double thanks to Scud for all the prep work he did, and for supplementing my "c'mon everyone, let's gather over here" with a louder, more motivating version (at no charge!)

Joe's daughter Sagatta actually cut up most of the fries with a little help from Dad. We had a great time. I have known many of the Richmond MORE folks for a while. They really know how to party. About 40 of them will be at the Fall Camping trip.

Many thanks to all our NOVA brothers and sisters. We Richmondites had a ball. I'm sure I'll see most of you real soon on some of the weekly group rides.
Thanks again,
Scott

Great ride folks. It was nice to meet some new folks (both from Richmond and the DC area). Hope to see some of you out on the trails sometime soon.
