Been debating about pedals for a long time now.. HAD decided that I wanted to stick with SPDs so I could be consistent between bikes...but not sure about that now..
I notice that my cleats (relatively new, thx gaz) come unclipped when i loft over moguls or the like. You know, when you're hanging in the air and you're putting english on the bike and bowing your legs out...it causes my foot/feet to roll outward, which causes an unclip, and landing unclipped is not something I want to keep doing. Is this the nature of the SPD device? Will Times or CBs be any different in this particular regard?
I know that I want some platform, I like the Mallets and the Shimano M545 BMX/DH pedals..

FWIW, and this is based solely on personal experience, I noticed significantly less 'rolling out' of pedals with the Time's than Shimano (or similar) as well as the Egg Beaters.

I'm a recent convert to Speedplay Frogs. No platforms, but you will stay clipped in. I've tried SPD and Crank Brother Candies but like the Frogs for their float and the fact that they stay clipped in unless you really try to get out, then it's like butter.
I like the Mallets (got em for winter and on the wife's bike when she rides) but my main problem with the egg beater design is that it tends to unclip you when it smacks a rock on the bottom side. SPD have a clunky engagement that bothers me, they're too tight or too loose and you get unclipped at the wrong times.

I used to unclip from my 959s at inopportune times until I really tightened down the tension on the pedals. I can still get out when I want, but now there's no unclipping when really pulling up on the pedals or jumping. I have also tried CBs and came back to shimano.

-jonI've got mine cranked up pretty tight-- such that they're perfect for straight pull-strokes... but even so, a simple lateral roll of the foot and they clip right out. This is no problem EXCEPT when lofting- when there's bike english. My shins are getting nervous.

I wholeheartedly agree. I know this thread will probably become another "which pedal platform is better" discussion, but in my experience, the Time's work a lot better than the Shimano's. With SPD, I had a lot of trouble clipping out when I didn't want to, not being able to clip out when I did want to, and not being able to clip in sometimes either. I also ride in a lot of mud, snow, ice, etc. and the Time's beat the pants off the SPD's in those conditions IMHO.
Bottom line for me was that as soon as I went to Time's I stopped having to fiddle with the pedal adjustments, replacing cleats, cleaning the pedals, etc. -- always trying to get it to work reliably. Once I went to Time's all the problems went away.

Been using CB smarties for about a month now. Up until monday I was loving them.
Fell 2x, both times (shamefully) because I had to dab and couldn't unclip fast enough.
They're the first clipless I've used off road, so I'll point the finger at me, not the Brothers Crank.... they were a little hard to get into as well when the cleats were caked.
But that could be more pilot-error as well...
...practice, practice... :o
