View Full Version : Attempting first bb and crank install m760- XT

UPS just delivered the tool and crankset with bb, XT 760's for my 2004 575. I usually let the professionals mess with my drivetrain. I do everything else myself. However, with a fast growing baby girl and the wife staying home being a full time mom, I've got to do it myself. So, any tips, things to look out for with these cranks or the install in general? I still have to take out the Truvativ bb too. From my research, I've got a 73mm bb. I should use one 2.5 spacer on the drive side. Any help will be appreciated!!!!

Just remember that the right hand side is threaded in an opposite manner...clockwise loosens, counter clockwise tightens. This is one lesson I learned the hard way changing out the BB on my homebuilt SS.

If you have the correct tools, and rudimentary wrenching skills...this should be no problem. I've been teaching myself repairs for the past year or so...It keeps me on the trail more and keeps what little bit of change i have IN MY POCKET. good luck, post up if you run into trubble :D

Non drive side crankbolt won't come loose. Pain in my bleep!!!!!

If this is and ISIS BB, 1 tip is to put a single pass of Teflon tape on the threads and lightly grease. This will help prevent creaking. Also make sure to clean the threads well. Use a torque wrench to properly torque the crankarm bolts. Have fun, David

CLEAN THE THREADS (very important) on both the BB and the frame. Then put one layer of Teflon tape on the BB then lightly grease. Be careful when threading BB into frame, you don't want to craoss thread it. D!

XT 760s are pretty easy to install. Hope you have the Park BBT-9 (http://www.parktool.com/products/detail.asp?cat=25&item=BBT-9) . If not, get one. You want the box end rather than the open end that the cheap Shimano BB tools have, plus the BBT-9 has the little torx-like thing for tightening the crank bolt.

Definitely clean the threads in the BB shell with citrus degreaser, then dry thoroughly. Have a shop chase them if they are really grungy; it shouldn't take long or cost much. You should not need Teflon tape or anything on the bearing cups; just grease the threads. Put a little grease on the splines that hold the nondrive-side crankarm. You want to get the cups tight, but you don't need to muscle them into submission. Just hold the rubber grip on the tool and crank it as tight as you can without going to extreme measures. I recommend pulling up on the tool as opposed to pushing down. Remember that the drive side is left-hand threaded.

Otherwise, follow the instructions. They do a pretty good job, but if you've never installed one of these outboard bearing BBs before it may seem confusing. If you have more specific questions, ask.

Great!! The feeling of accomplishment! Strike BB/crank stuff from your list of things that require you putting your bike in the shop!
