Any SPD compatible mountain bike shoe that's in your price range and feels good on your foot. If the shoe fits, wear it.

I agree with Craig, but if you want to know my personal favorites: For short rides (1-3 hours) Sidi Dominator 5's. They fit me like a glove and are easy to walk and run in. Cons are: price, hard on the balls of your feet on long rides, and I hear that the ratcheting buckle can break. This has not happened to me yet.

For longer rides and the shoe that is quickly becoming my favorite all around shoe: Specialized Pro carbon mountain shoe. They feel great. The soles are very stiff and give you the feel of a platform pedal even though I use eggbeaters exclusively (no platform). Cons are: price and hard to walk or run in due to the very stiff sole. Hey, you can't have it both ways.

Also, the Specialized come with cleats (the kind that you screw in to the toe, not the kind that clip to your pedals) and a nice drawstring bag.

i'm a fan of diadora's. wide toe box area. 661 makes a pretty decent looking shoe.

Ive had good luck with oakley, diadora, shimano and my dad uses cannondales with those pedals. It is all preference. If you like a hiking style shoe pick up a pair of cannondales from performance. They are comfortable and are easy to walk in. If you want a blend between hiking shoes and normal xc shoes go for the oakleys. They are pricey but are cost less than sidis at $125 and are very durable and allow you to ride unclipped through tech sections. Diadoras are great for a cheaper shoe and fit well and shimanos are alittle more expensive but their stitching seems to be of higher quality. Ultimatly it is up to which is more comfortable for you feet.

I second the Specialized, however I use Shimano pedals, and I think shoes are like saddles, everyone is going to be a little bit different.

I bought an all purpose cycling shoe for my first pair. Shimano SH-MA80, they accept most all pedal clip systems. Very well ventilated. Reasonable priced. I figuered after a year I would move up to a better MTB specific shoe after some experience with the starter shoes. Almost 3 years later, they have not worn out yet, and I ride 4 or 5 times a week. At least 100 miles per week off road. And they are still serving me quite well. I will definitley buy a new pair before this winter sets in, as my shimano's because they are so well ventilated they are cold as all hell in winter riding especially if my feet get wet. I am probably ready for a more top of the line pair. But for 70 bucks they make a great starter shoe.
