My girl told me today she wants a rack (for her car). Shes insisting on a roof rack but thats gonna run between 580-600+. Anyone have any recommendations on a better alternative? Im searching CL and Ebay. From what I can tell, with some minor adjustments, I might be able to fit a used rack onto her car. Anyway, I appreciate any advice you all have. Thanks again.

I assume you have looked at Thule and Yakima...but Performance has their own racks that run under $200 for the roof bars, then probably another $100 for each bike tray. I don't know what the quality is like, I have always used Thule and Yakima products. Occasionally you see used systems around, too.

This is down here in Richmond, but I will be heading up to Maryland in a couple of weeks, and would be happy to make a delivery...

Post what kind of car it is: make, model, year, and if it has a factory rack on it already. That way some folks who are interested in selling can see if what they have is compatible with her car.

Hey, I have a couple Rocky Mount trays you can have. Lock cores included. I had to buy a different model for my car that came with factory crossbars. They will fit both rectangular and round bars (yakima/thule).

If he doesn't take the rocky mounts off your hands I will. I need an extra tray or two for my rack actually.

I bought my setup from agee bike (http://www.ageebike.com/), who is coincidently based down in richmond. I think I paid about $400 for the Yakima towers, cross bars, fairing, two king cobras and the assorted locks. When I looked (which was three years ago), they had the best price and seemed nice enough on the phone.

Ooops... Sorry Ricky, the rack isn't mine. I saw it on our boards down here, and figured that if I was going to be up that way, I could be a "courier".

No, not you, the original poster should post up the type of car she has if he wants to get a used one. :p

I've got a Saris roof rack with one of those arms that clamp to the down tube so you don't have to remove the front wheel.

Yours for the asking, but buyer beware: Saris makes the best trunk rack you can get. Not so for their roof racks. My bike never fell off, but boy, did it sometimes sound like it was about to happen!

Now that I've painted you a glowing picture, PM if you're interested!

I've got a couple Thule Velo Vises and a Velo Vise II (all full trays) just sitting around in the garage. I don't use them anymore due to most of my bikes having bolt-on front wheels (lefties / thru axles) making them a pain to put on a fork-mount rack.

I also have some random bits (towers / adapters) laying around, but I'd have to see exactly what they are.

Up for grabs...

I'll take the trays off your hands. Where are you located?

You all are great. I ended up finding a great deal on Craigslist but I really appreciate the generosity. Hopefully someone here can benefit from this post, as there seems to be alot of spare parts lying around everyone's garage. :)

I haven't checked back on this thread in a bit after I threw my Rocky Mounts up for grabs.
Crashmore or skiandmtb, do you guys want the set. Seems like one of you may have picked up a set.
Thanks!

Peter and Jason,

Would either of you still have the racks you mentioned below? I need to get a Thule roof rack ASAP for a Toyota Corrolla-- possibly saturday, if anybody is around.

Please let me know!

Thanks,

Bunky

Sorry man. You might check with Skiandmtb to see if he has anything left. I gave him a couple sets of towers and a few velo vices. I don't know if he was actually able to use all of them between him and his buds.

OK: addendum to my earlier post. I am getting a Yakima rack from Trail Victim with one tray/ bike mount. Anybody got another Yakima tray or two which will accomodate bikes with Avid BB7 mechanical disc brakes? PM me if you would be willing to part with such item(s) on the cheap! :D

I have a pair of Yak Steelheads that may work for you. As for disc brake compatibility, I think it depends more on the brand of fork than the type of brake. Marz forks tend to have the brake droop down near the tray, I've never had an issue with RS or Manitou. Shoot me a PM or email to mwallace at VeeTee dot EeeDeeYoo if you're interested.

I have 2 Raptors for my rack. If you buy any more yakima stuff, check out Agee bikes -- it's a place in richmond, but they ship anywhere (only takes a day or two to ship here). They always have their rack stuff on "sale." The raptor is $85.49 -- which is $20 more than the fork mount tray.

Anyway -- the Raptor is nice because it grabs onto the downtube of your frame, so you don't have to worry about the compatibility of the rack to your disc brakes, and you don't have to store the wheel in the trunk. I would say that they're pretty durable -- this past summer I drove with 3 bikes on top from Chattanooga, TN to Fruita, Moab, and Jackson and back with no problems.

Yep, I had to cut a little notch out of my tray when I switched to Marzocchi forks. It wasn't a big deal, though. I just used a metal blade on my jigsaw. I think my trays are Yakima Copperheads.
