The C&O Canal trail: Conditions???

01/09/04...:confused: ...Anyone out there ridden the C&O Canal trail in the last couple days. I was wondering how it's been holding up so far this year. I was thinking of planning a ride out that way and was hoping for a "Firm and not too muddy surface". Also, I was wondering if anyone knows if White's Ferry still operates in the winter (?) I'd like to do the loop that goes into Va. but I have no idea how the ferries run in the winter. I only know that if the water levels are high, they don't operate the ferry.......Rob

The ferry runs year-round, except when the water is high, which is not today.

I have not ridden the canal in the last couple of days....but I have ridden the whole thing twice in past years. The section of towpath near whites ferry is one of the the worst parts of the trail......it can get extremly muddy! I have riddden through there and the entire towpath is covered with water!!! :eek:
