View Full Version : Rear der install

I got the X9 rear d/shifter combo and started installation. When I bolt the der onto the hanger and tighten it, there's still about .5 mms of play and it jiggles loosely. I'm sure it'll be taught once the chains on....but this just doesn't sound right. I've stopped right there before I go any further with it.. Almost like all it needs is a thin washer.
What's up with this?

Well i guess the space allows for main pivot movement. Everything's lined up...guess I just don't remember my shimano stuff having this particular play. could be wrong. moving on..

Did you make sure that the derrailure is at the right angle? Sometimes it will wiggle when not at the right angle.
By the way nice choice in drivetrain ;-)

oh yea it's the right angle. The stop/adjust washer just spins freely, by the way-- there's no spring tension (like my shimanos) of any kind. Any which way i mount it to the hanger, it jiggles a little. After all the hype and shimano smacking i really hope this thing doesn't fail me from the get-go.
Can anyone provide input on this?
EDIT: ok, feeling a little better after reading... http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?p=2157152#post215715 2

I recently built up my 29er using the X-9 rear D. I'm sorry but I just can't remember if there was the play you are describing or not
However I know that I followed the SRAM directions that came with it step by step and everthing has worked fine so far (most of the summer).
I wish I could be more helpful. I would follow the directions and see how it works?
Good luck

Sounds like you just didn't rotate the b tension set thingy to the right place before screwing it in. I guess you got it working?
The important thing to remember is those H and L screws so you don't shift onto your frame or into your spokes, thus destroying your new shiny parts. I wrote this stuff a long time ago but it holds up http://bikeleague.org/resources/better/maintenance.php.
Enjoy!

The b-tension stop-washer thingy was in the correct place all along....but once you mount it to the hanger there's still lateral play....per the mtbr thread this is apparently normal.. ...but certainly strange.
The high stop was a little tricky, but once I got the guide pulley in the right place it worked fine. When the cage is in its fully retracted position, there's only a hair between it and the body of the der...and the cage swings allllll the way up towards the cogs.. Just a few observations of a new component....stops are fine, just working on the indexing now.
