ive got my eye on a pair of 2003 Shimano XTR Dual Control V-Brake Levers online. do these require a rapid rise rear derailleur or can they be with a nonrapid rise derailleur?

The shifter don't care what direction the derailleur pulls. You just can use 'em with SRAM X.- stuff.

ok, thanks. i wasnt sure if the newer derailleurs had more or less cable pull and if they did, could all shifters handle it. are there any tangible differences between the 2003 xtr dual control and newer XTR models?
