i took a spill and now the avid 5 left v-brake lever has play in it, in that it can now be moved up and down. i cant see any screws and nothing looks wrong (except for the play). should i take this in and have the shop look at it??

Yes, have it looked at. It could be cracked at the pivot. Those levers bend fairly easily by design. It would be a good idea to have a spare pair on hand. I have various Avid levers on 3 of my bikes so I keep a couple in my tool box.

anyone know where i can get a lever for the 2003 avid 5 v-brake at a reasonable price. i asked the shop and they said im screwed since its 2003 (too old), cant get it and that id have to get a entire brake set. i looked online and found replacement levers between $27-35. i can get an entire brand new brake set for that price.

I know that you can get just the lever, but I would recommend replacing the whole assembly. I don't think they cost much more than the levers by themselves. I got my speed dial 7's ridiculously cheap--around 30 bucks per pair. I don't remember where from though. Performance has them for 55 a pair. If you want just the lever, try ordering them through your LBS.
