Define 'not too far from DC', and check out our 'where to ride' section. There are tens of venues within an hour drive of DC.

I'm trying to find decent places to ride my mountainboard. Now that I've ridden them a few times on my bike I'm thinking the whoop section at wakefield is a good starter but it feels like a lot of hike for little reward.

mountainboard. That's funny, I was just getting to ready to look up http://dirtsurfer.com/ when I decided to read your post.

Take a look at Riverbend Park. There's a nice long doubletrack leading from Jeffrey Rd down to the river. Who knows what shape it's in right now, but the last few times I rode it I thought it'd be perfect for a mountainboard (not that I'd really know, never tried it). Also, adjacent Great Falls Park has even more, and smoother fireroads. But, you'd have to hit that at night or dawn to avoid crowds.

The mountainboard is pretty fun but scary too. If you think tire presure is critical on a bike it's even more so on a board because a lot of the time that controls your acceleration, braking, turning everything. Fully pumped tires on a hard slick surface go fast really quick and falling is a nasty option.

I've been riding over at wakefield a little. I usually walk to the top of the 495 pedestrian overpass, then ride down the ramp, use the grass to scrub speed if I need it. Cut left back towards the parking lot then sharp right, avoiding the bollard, onto the path that snakes down by the tennis courts. Fun, fast and more than a little nerve racking.
