Have any of you used 8-speed chainrings on a 9-speed drivetrain?? I realize the chain width is slightly different. Does it shift okay or lead to excessive wear?

My shifters, chain and cassette need replaced and 8-speed is becoming obsolete.

I don't think you can use the 8 speed chainrings with the 9 speed chain because the teeth are thicker (beefier).

Both my bikes are still on 8 speed, and one of them I just built. I like the 8 speed, it last longer since it's beefier and shifts better in muddy conditions. You can still get 8 speed stuff, new XT shifters for under $70, xt Cassette for under $50. and just use 9 speed chainrings and deraileurs (though I find race face 8 speed chainrings sets on ebay for under $30) , 9 spd chainrings work fine with the 8 spd chain.

Even though 8 speed is seemingly going out, you can run and 8-speed cassette and shifters with a 9-speed derailleur. Just crank the stop screws to the right places and make sure to use 8-speed shifters. I know Sram still makes 8-speed shifters, I got some last year. Granted, I did get Gripshift, so I don't know about Triggers.

Good luck, and I hope I haven't confused anyone--Graham
