Looking to buy a full suspension bike around this price. Brand doesnt really matter, looking for a good reliable machine that will get me around. As long as its structurally sound, I'm not too particular about the cosmetics (within reason) as its going to get beat up anyway. Wife and I currently do very moderate trail riding a couple times a month, the other times I will just be doing park rides/laps in my neighborhood. Have looked at the GT Idrive 3.0 and the Spec FSR XC.

Sizewise, looking for a large or something that would fit me (6', 175)

Live in Kingstowne/Alexandria, can easily pick up from your place if its in the area.

So send me some info and pics so I can start to get an idea of whats out there.

Thanks much.

You might want to check out Craigslist.com, and even eBay as well... might be a good starting point. There is also the MTBR.com classifieds.

Thanks Craig, been checking both actually. Always feel like buying from someone local on an established site is a better option if I can - that way I can at least see the bike before buying it.

Yeah, I agree. You might also want to check around with a couple of LBS' too to see if they have any for sale ads up.

you can get some good stuff off of craigslist and you can touch it but if you know what to look for in the decision making process for buying a bike and know how to use ebay (only buy from well reviewed paypal sellers, etc), you can get better deals there even with the shipping IMHO.

Check out the citybikes.com closeout list. I know we have an old Jamis Dakar XLT 2.0 on sale in your size for about $1200. Check out the rest of the sale items.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I did manage to find a few sellers on ebay that look like they move a lot of bikes. The problem is after getting burned once last summer on a golf club, I wont buy from anyone under 99.8% or so feedback, but it looks like there are a couple of good options out there.

Thanks again!

Be careful with bikes on eBay. I was in the market for a frame a while ago and I noticed a lot of bike sellers on eBay put up auctions for 99 cents and then tell you to email them instead of bidding. Then in their email reply they talk about a third-party "escrow" service where they want you to send the $$. Of course eBay warns you never to conduct business outside their service but in this case they're right. Stick to eBay and PayPal and you should be safe. PayPal will refund your money if you don't receive the item or it's not as described. I have been through the claim process and it works.

Thanks TDN, I would never do anything like that anyway. Have bought and sold a lot of golf clubs on ebay and have learned that sellers can come up with all sorts of scams. Thats why I stick to the high volume guys with 100% feedback. Its still not the way I would prefer to go with a purchase like this, but its an option at least.

i've got a kona dawg sitting in my shed that i'd be willing to part with - plus a mixture of parts for a build. mostly deore lx/xt stuff, used but good for a while longer.
the frame is virtually new despite being an '03 - note it's a size 17" frame, so you'll wanna check out konaworld dot com for spec's... i'm just about six feet and it was tight for me as i usually ride something between 18-20 inches depending upon the top tube and geometry. it rode pretty nice and you could bomb downhill sections comfortably.

i can take a pick or two if you're interested.

I got a C-dale Jekyll that is XT/XTR avid mechs 2002 frame with 2004 swingarm(made so you can have bigger tires) I was not sure on price but $700 would be good, I bought it for $850 (2004) used and replaced the deore parts with XT or XTR. Bought new cranks, shifters, derailers, and brakes, so I have put alot of money into the bike, and she has served me well. I am riding a 29er now so the 26er stuff has gotta go!
