View Full Version : Looking for Mavic Crossmax SL non disc rear rim

Hey guys,
I pulled a spoke out of my rear wheel (crossmax SL, non disc). The rim is dead but the hub and spokes are still good. I'm looking for a replacement rim and/or wheel to finish the season. Mavic would charge 250$ plus shipping to rebuild the wheel and that is beyond my biking budget for now.
Anybody has a used crossmax rim lying around (i know this is a long shot), or another similar non-disc back wheel you have no use for?

You gotta stop riding like a bad azz. Ride like a nancy, me for instance, and your wheels last a lifetime. :D

Hey Jon,
Thanks for the good advice but I just can't help riding into rocks and trees. :)
Seriously the breakdown was not caused by a trail incident. It happened while I was climbing!
I think that that wheel has a little design flaw. The side of the cassette is radial so the power is mostly transmitted by the non cassette side. Of the 10 spokes on that side, only 5 actually make the wheel turn when you apply power.
It was one of these 5 that tore out of the rim. The other 4 spokes eyelets all have stress crack where the spoke screws in the rim.
We should get together and ride soon. I somehow doubt that you really ride like a nancy. If I remember last time you rode me into the ground.
Cheers

I have an old pair of xtr mavic rims just sitting in my closet. I will sell the rear for $75???
I also have a Chris King hub on a mavic rim but I would have to ask some more cake for that.

I haven't been riding much lately but I'll let you know next time I'm out at Merriman's or Avalon. Bummer about your trashed rear wheel though...I know those wheels are pricey retail. I looked at them before I went with a custom build.

Hi, that could be interesting. Are you sure it is compatible. Is it a 20 spokes wheel? My old rim is very specific because the threads appear to have been drilled at an angle. Freewheel side is radial, the other is a crossed pattern.
Let me know

Yeah,
I dont think I would try to take this wheel apart and rebuild. I was suggesting just use this wheel until you get the other replaced. Never a bad idea to have a second pair of wheels lying around but this would not be compatible with your spokes and hub.
