View Full Version : Schaeffer Hazard: Watch Out

There have been some windy days in the past weeks, and there was a lot of litter and deadfall on the trails yesterday. Just as I passed the spot which effectively begins and ends the yellow loop "field" portion going counter-clockwise, I noticed some huge shards of tree trunk and bark on the trail; then, after a fast, blind corner lay the tree itself. There were multiple skids around the trunk to the right, but I was going too fast; I layed the bike over on my right and shouldered the blow, which wasn't too bad (some cuts and bruises is all), but if I had hit the tree head on it would have been really bad at that speed. I'm sure it will be cleared soon, but I am mentioning this just to warn those who are thinking about riding there in the next few days.

Can you drive to the cell tower from Scheaffer road. I can remove those logs. I am just trying to find a shorter way to that area. I usaually hike to remove debris and carring a chainsaw and gear is hard. I have tried biking with a chainsaw but it does'nt work well.

I almost got taken out by that tree too. I locked up my wheels and the back came around and I slid into the tree. No damage though. I totally forgot about it until now. I beleive you can drive back to the cell tower. I have never done it, but I've seen cars back there before. Should just be right off Schaffer road.

Thanks for posting the warning. I put this under Schaeffer Trail Conditions with a link where it used to be.

It's a bit bumpy, but I got my civic down there for a trail maintance day once so the wrangler would be fine. I believe the access road is next to a old crumbling farm building, but it's been awhile since I drove down there.

It's easier if the motor isn't running!! :D :D :D

PS Having walked from one end of Schaffer to the other carrying a chain saw - I definitely feel your pain!

Do what BikerMiker does: use a B.O.B. trailer! I saw him trying to get over a log pile with the B.O.B. trailer attached, while carrying a chainsaw in it...it don't work so hot :p
