We didn't ride. I got there around 6:15 and it was just starting to rain. I stayed for about half an hour to see what was going to happen. James showed up and I saw a few others arrive and then drive off.
Thunderstorms don't soak the trails too badly since they come and go relatively quickly. I expect that we should be okay on Saturday. There may be muddy low lying spots, but I expect the trails to be rideable by Saturday.

The ride is usually steady, not race pace. We adjust to the group. Ricky is leading the ride this week, so it may be a faster ride. But I am sure he will adjust to the group also. David

The casual ride last night was great! Our fearless leader, Bob, got pulled away from the ride when we came across an injured rider. Bob helped the rider get to road so he could get picked up by his wife for a trip to the hospital. What a Good Samaritan! :)

Only riderx showed up for the moderate ride that I led last night. What do you call the pace above moderate? Race pace? Yeah, it was that. It was great trying to stay in front of him (me: HR 200 BPM and barely able to catch my breath, him: whistlin' and having casual conversation while HR 100 BPM) I'm toast! :o

I need to scout out some locations for my skills ride on Saturday and would like to do it Thur. night. If I make up to Scheaffer, I'll be doing a casual ride with stops here and there to look at places I'd like to stop on Saturday. Probably won't do Hoyles Mill since there are more logs, etc around the farm.

And stop putting all this stuff about Dr. Evil up. You guys want to ruin him with conceit or something. Eventually temptation may just get him.

Roll the dice!!! I'm going to plan on heading out to Schaeffer tonight for the ride. I've heard from some near the park that it has rained very little today. My location in Rockville has seen only the occasional sprinkles. If Schaeffer is questionable, we'll give Hoyles a try. Hoyles is shedding water exceptionally well and, barring a downpour near the time of the ride, it should offer us an option. If neither is workable, we'll bag the ride and head to a local pub.

Scheaffer has some spots that should be avoided. Of course the hill at the cell tower and there are spots through out the trails also. The white trail outer loop between 1 & 2 has a mud bog at the creek that should be avoided. The trail as a whole is O.K., not great but O.K.

I went to the beach this weekend, so, the Spot has not been built up yet. There is also the whole "how is my wife going to react" when I bring the frame home. Currently it is residing in my brother’s garage while I fabricate a complex and intriguing story as to how it came into my possession. I may have to break down my old C'dale and stash it in the attic so she only sees 3 bikes when she enters the garage. I'm still working out the details.
Any suggestions on how this can be accomplished, while keeping my marriage intact, are always welcome.

The key is to have so many bikes that she can't keep track of them anymore. :D
Oh BTW, I already treated the Spot with Framesaver.

I think the key, in my case, would be to replace all old bikes with ones of the same color. I'm pretty sure she doesn't notice the components, but she sure notices what color they are. Unfortunately the Spot is that nice motor scooter blue while the old C'dale is a white to black fade. Ummmm, how to pull this off

Get some waterbased paint that matches the color of your other bikes. Alternativly, just never wash it so it's always mud color.

Hey guys - new to the area and interested in coming out tonight to join the ride. I live in Silver Spring, just north of the beltway - how much time should allow to make it to Schaeffer? Mapquest said about 30 mins, but I haven't figured out how to gauge traffic around here yet. Any secrets or back roads I should know about?
Also - is Schaeffer survivable on a SS? No time to fix up the other rig tonight.

Cmon out!! We will be starting the ride at 6 pm, so, from Silver Spring allow yourself at least 40 minutes at that time of the day. Traffic going north on 270 can be a pain. There are usually two groups riding at Schaeffer, a fast moderate and a casual group. Dave leads the moderate and Bob normally leads the casual. However, Bob can't lead so Liz will be leading the casual group tonight.
Bring your SS!! Schaeffer is a great place for your single gear steed. There is a large number of us in the moderate group and a few in the casual group that all ride SS. One gear = more beer :D
Hope to see you out there,

Last nights ride was great, good turnout at the Pub and the new bike is......awesome. I freakin' love that thing! After a small mishap early on I started to get the feel of the Spot. A little more time in the saddle and I was feeling the groove. Still getting use to the Mary bars, but, I'm liking them so far. After I was feeling comfortable I started hitting the larger TTF's at speed. The Spot is smooth and confidence inspiring. I cleaned the large tree on the orange connector off the white trail on the first try. SWEET!! Basically, I'm hooked. I drank the Koolaid and I want seconds.
A great big mahalo goes out the Scott for hooking me up in more ways than one. All it took was one ride on your Bianchi for me to catch the bug. Then you just happen to have a Spot frame laying around as well as all the extra parts just sitting in your Jeep. Incredible and thanks.

I am thinking we need to mix it up and do Hoyles mill & Black Hills this thursday (moderate ride). We will need to leave right at 6pm to be able to finish it all. We may want to bring lights just in case there are any mechanical failures (this will not mean this is a night ride, just a precaution).
For those interested I plan on doing the Mini-epic (scheaffer-hoyles mills-black hills). So I will be at scheaffer at 3:45 to get all of Scheaffer in before the regular ride. That should give us plenty of time to finnish Scheaffer before 6pm.

There is a new tree down on hoyles mill that isnt rideable because it is unstable and elevated above the ground. If you where coming from sheaffer it would be located at the beginning of the first singletrack section after crossing Little Seneca lake on the road. It is on a down hill and is slightly off camber so its hard to stop and there is no runaround. It is fairly new as it wasnt there earlier this week when i rode part of the hmc. Be carefull i almost got flattened by it myself.

A couple climbs you will probably have to walk. But I would say most of the trails are very ss friendly. And from River Rd at the beltway to the exit for MD 109 (Sugarloaf) is probably 30-40 minutes depending on whether 270 is backed up (or I should say, how far south the backup is). Unfortunately the evening northbound backups are usually just south of there (at MD 121/Clarksburg where 270 NB goes from 3 lanes to 2) and can stretch to Germantown on a good day or Montgomery Village on a bad one. This week traffic hasn't been too bad (considering Moco and Frnx schools are back in session) but the rain won't help matters at all.
If 270 is reeeeeally bad, you can also get off 270 at exit 6 (MD 28 west) and take that all the way to Dickerson. After the stop sign (and you cross under the train tracks) turn right on Mt. Ephraim Rd. That will take you to the "Stronghold" intersection with Comus Rd at the base of Sugarloaf. This route will probably take you about 40-50 minutes from River Rd and the beltway. But it's an option if 270 is fubar. (for that matter you could bypass 495/270 altogether and take River Rd > Esworthy Rd > Seneca Rd and come out on 28 in Darnestown, the scenic route)

Also, anyone thinking of doing the Bike Lane/MORE ride on Friday. I had already planned to play hookie post-SM100. Any takers?

I am not holding my breath on Scheaffer. As much rain as we got, I am sure that it is messy in alot of area's. If I get a chance I will walk part of it after work. I would rather ride The Shed. But if that is too much trouble for some, I understand (the traffic). Maybe You all should just take off early from work tomorrow :D

So were getting down to the wire here so what's it gonna be? For now it looks doubtful that I will be able to ride tomorrow night. I've had my ankle taped up and have been on Naproxen, Ibuprofen, & malt whisky and it's still pretty sore. Don't worry James, I'll show up regardless and swap out your freewheel and participate in the post ride embibement. :)

I'll do the ride with my 22t cog on the back if that'll make you feel better. Maybe you should take a Vitamin "V" tonight. Guess I'll have to change the post-SM100 flat.
Liz is going to check out Schaeffer tomorrow around lunch. Assuming we get a decent report, I'll be heading out there for the ride.

No worries-- I'll be there. I'd hate to think about you trying to spin Schaeffer 32:22. I may even ride. We'll just have to see how the ankle is feelin'. I'd hate to blow it up off season.
Vitamin V is cool, but doesn't really fix anything. Just makes you not care.

Lights are a good idea from here on out. It gets kinda hard to see toward the end of the ride and if there are any mechanicals, we could be riding in full darkness. So bring 'um if you got 'um.

Hi--I rode with you and Mark at Patapsco about two weeks ago. I am heading to Schaeffer for a ride this afternoon -- I'll probably be there and start riding between 3 to 4. You know, I can't hang with the big boys so don't plan a ride around me -- but look for me on the trail and say hi!
I know nothing about the numbers folks were throwing around in the post, but I typically ride the Yellow, Blue and White. I avoid the Orange b/c I get enough fun at Patapsco, and I'm planning on riding there tomorrow afternoon.

I rode just about everything today, except the red crookneck trail and the new orange trail. It's about 95% dry, with a few puddles in the usual places. AND the entire yellow loop is rideable, thanks to the cornfield reroutes. It's warm and breezy out there, so should dry even more by 6.
Great day for a ride.... see you at DFH!

Yes they are legal. I heard they would eventually become permanent to avoid the muddy portions of the yellow trail. True? False?

I think we need to go underground. Maybe reopen that old speak easy off the Hoyles Mill trail. It's got a nice three holer too. We can set up a still and a brewery. How sweet would that be? We could just ride our bikes right to the bar. We would have complete control of the chalkboard. Sounds like paradise.

Runnin' from the law red- For those night rides that didn't quite get approval :D
" A full bodied, robust Imperial Red Ale where the maltiness intensifies, as does the extreme hop-personality. Complexity increases with the higher alcohol content of the Imperial. This spotlights the hop profile all the more, taking you into groves of citrus trees or pine forests nettled with softened dirt floors. You may even feel the stinging bite of the hop monster and yield in a perpetual search for extreme hop pleasures."

"Foot prints on the dashboard upside down ale"
This brew has quite nice body. The aroma from late addition of East Kent Goldings in the cask is intoxicating, as is this beer itself. At 12% ABV, extreme caution should always be taken while consuming this fine example of a strong ale. While you may be tempted to pound it down quickly, savor it slowly and cautiously.

I don't know about the rest of you, but, I'm planning to do the regular Thursday ride. It gets dark by 7:30 now and I was planning on riding from 6 (regular time) until about 7-7:15. So, for all you people who want to ride Schaeffer this Thursday but didn't sign up for the night ride, we can get a quick (or casual) one hour ride in. I will have to be back in the lot no later than 7:15 though as I am also the night ride coordinator. Because of the time limit I WILL be leaving the lot to ride at 6PM. If you get there at 6:01 you'll be SOL. :(
Please post back and let me know if you're planning to ride at 6. I'll try and keep an eye out for you. I'm on the motor scooter blue Spot SS driving a white Passport.

I know Bob is very busy at work and may not be able to lead a casual ride. If that happens and we have a mixed group (casual and moderate) of people for the pre ride, I will lead one group at a moderately casual pace ;) Basically we'll ride and adjust accordingly. This will not be a hammerfest. I was thinking a simple white trail loop with an orange connector or two.
