Well the trails where the muddiest ive ever ridden. I was covered in mud from head to toe and so was my bike. Trails will probably be closed tomorrow. Parts of white and yellow where just long puddles. Logrides are slipperyer than they look.

I can't believe anyone actually rode yesterday!! It should have been obvious the conditions were such that the trails should have been considered closed. It never even occurred to me that people would actually be out destroying the trails in that weather.

I know the event was tagged as "rain or shine" but ask yourself this: Would you have supported a few dozen riders that simply decided to blow off a normal rain-induced trail closure? Can't really see the logic for the double standard on this one. And it's not like it was a light rain...that was a drenching.
I realist that City Bikes is a major supporter of MORE and local cycling...I am prepared for the flames :)

I would point out that there were serveral M.O.R.E. members out riding on Saturday at the CityBikes event, so it's not fair to jump on Red... (particularly whomever gave him a red biscut)
These are the same people who do a lot of trailwork (myself included) at Schaeffer, Patapsco and other trails around here. The same people whom would otherwise not ride the trails for 2 days after an inch of rain. The same people whom contribute time, effort and money to M.O.R.E.
I'm not encouraging people to ride during or immediately after rain, however, the Demo day only happens 1 time a year. Considering that mud was not a problem (very few tracks were being left and while getting spattered, bikes where not coming back with thick mud caked all over the forks and seatstays) and no one was riding out to the outer yellow loop where the trails are most vunerable, I would venture to say very little damage was done. More damage gets done on a sunny Saturday after a rainy week when half the metro area comes out to Schaeffer (while we're out doing trailwork), than a dozen or so riders taking bikes on out 3-5 mile loop test rides.
Lets try to keep some perspective.

If people see organizations/shops like, MORE, IMBA, City Bikes, etc., out riding when the conditions are bad, they see that and think it's okay to ride. They don't know well we only stuck to this trail or it's a once a year demo day. They don't know the difference between puddles and mud. They see groups out riding when it's bad, so why not, they don't differentiate between what some people may have perceived or justifyied so they could validate riding.
Also just because you contribute money or do trailwork doesn't allow you some special privledges. It sucks the demo day was so crappy, takes a lot of time, effort and coordination to pull something like that together, but it still doesn't make it right.

The conditions were not bad. As I said in the other post, there was no mud. Red came back with no mud on him but rather leaf litter and water. I posted pics of the day on my blog and there isn't a muddy bike to be seen. I rode around 11am and only slid through one turn next to the cows. The trails were in great shape, just wet.
I got there early to make a decision about go-no go. The trails were fine at 7:30am and remained that way all day. Nobody came back muddy but everyone was wet. I think I can be trusted to make a decision here. It's not about City Bikes, it's about my personal call. And I have zero regrets.
So let's put this in perspective. After my 7 years as trail liaison at the most heavily used park in the ENTIRE Maryland system, the knowledge is there.
Schaeffer is fine.
