I have never been to wakefield. I know it's hard to believe. I would like to ride there once in a while, as it's the only place around for legal night riding, but would like to get somewhat familer with the trails (in daylight) first.

The map link in the "where to ride" section is broken, is there a map available?

Also, I don't see any recent posts on conditions there, weather looks good for this weekend, do you guys think it'll be ok to ride, or is there a reason no one is mentioning conditions there? Is there a safe rule of thumb for number of days after rain before it's ok to ride there (it's a schlep for me to get there - that's why I've never gone - I'd hate to show up and not be able to ride).

If you've got lights, the Tuesday and Thursday casual rides are GREAT introductions to Wakefield. Communicate with the ride leader about what the ride is like and what your skills are and they'll definitely help you out. I believe Craig2 is leading the ride this Thursday. He's a perfect person to introduce people to Wakefield.

Conditions at Wakefield are almost perfect. The tiny bit of moisture we had last night should be great for keeping some dust down.

I can see about posting up one of my Topo plots of Wakefield. That might give you an idea of where the trails are. The trails are pretty close together, so the topo map isn't always 100% clear.

Pete,

If we do some collaboration we could even put the proper names on the sections of trails.

Personally, I'm hoping never to see the terms, "Mixing Bowl" or "The Bowls" again.

We could name that section of trail "Steve". It's such a pretty name. ;)

I'll try and do something this weekend. I think all of my tracks have Wakefield and Accotink together. I can just cut a new track on Thursday night and systematically ride everything out there to map it.

Gotta love that geeky hot talk. ;)

I was out at Wakefield closing down some of the re-opened fall line and free-ride trails and decided to check out the conditions of the typical wet spots.

Basically - "WHAT RAIN?????" There wasn't any hint of moisture in the trails, including the powerline trails and Phase II.

Happy Riding...............

Yeah, It soaked up pretty dang fast. We were at Schaeffer last night and the trails were dry. The only thing I noticed was that the dust was a little less evident.

See y'all tonight.

I, for one, would love to see some kind of labeled map of Wakefield. Funny thing is, I know it pretty well, but everyone I know calls different sections by different names.

I'd be willing to help out graphically in any way I could - being I'm a 'designer' and all...heheheh.

A current wakefild map would be great. Maby one of just the racecourse and once of all the trails toghather. Which trail is the fall line trail? Is that the one that was blocked off with caution tape (which was torn down when i last went there)

I brought my GPS on a couple of night rides and also for some day riding around Accotink, and have compiled the data into a Google Map. Unfortunately, it doesn't currently work in Internet Explorer, and is rough around the edges, but if you visit this link http://www.thenymans.net/maps/map.cgi?map=FairfaxMTB.kml&zoom=6&lat=38.88&long=-77.303
you can zoom in on my data around the two parks. It works with Firefox (and presumably safari), but if you use IE, you'll see about 1/2 the icons, and none of the trails. (If anyone is really good with Google Maps, feel free to offer constructive criticism re: my code. I'm getting ready to rewrite from scratch to fix the IE issue.)

Here is a GPS map I made of Wakefield on the warm Monday night we had a few weeks back. It isn't the best GPS map I ever made, but it is a start if someone want's to clean it up and label sections. My GPS didn't function perfectly that night for some reason, so there were some gaps created.

FYI - Doesn't seem to work in Safari. I just get a blank page with the directions in the top right corner....

not to stir the pot, but exactly what makes the trail that some jerk decided to re-open against the obvious will of the powers that be and the reasonable minded people of the status quo a "free-ride" trail. just because it is steep doesnt mean it is "free-ride". it is the use of this term in these instances that gives the free-ride community a bad name. just say it was a re-opened fall line trail. DONE. be part of the solution.

Your absolutely correct.

However when you catch the folks raking the trail with their 6 plus inch front and rear travel bikes lying next to the trail it's easy to make assumptions. To be honest, I have to admit that a poser is a poser no matter the sport. A real freerider wouldn't waste their time or talents on Wakefield.

So what should would we call them??

I was thinking along the lines like, "DILLERS". A cross between a digger and a down hiller. A biker who feels the need to bomb a downhill but also feels the need to build (Dig in the dirt).

Now in all honesty, I'm a digger. I'll admit it. But I'm a 40 something, white collar digger who pushes the limits of the rules - but for the most part stays with in the lines. I've tried some down hill riding but you have to be born with that ability.

Some of my best friends are Diller's.

BUT - I'll never truly understand the Diller.

After a few cold ones I try and talk Diller - but I ain't fooling anyone.

But I digress - From this moment on I shall refer to the Wakefield trail fairies as "Dillers" and not "Freeriders".

i applaud your creativity with the term. cheers!

but everyone should bomb a good downhill now and again, makes you a better rider!
