Rode Schaeffer yellow and white trails about 45 minutes after we heard it was open. Trails are in excellent condition: even the normally muddy parts of the yellow trail (near the cell tower) are in great shape...one or two sticky patches, that's it.

The new log features are great!

Yep - the trail conditions are fabulous! :D

However, what Liz meant to say was "The new log features are dangerous!" I went to great lengths (well only about 10' really) to demonstrate this to my boys on Saturday by proving once and for all that fat old men do land harder when falling from great height - much to their extreme amusement! :o :o Robert (age 10) made a couple of half-hearted attempts to show up Dad but ultimately had to agree I was right and wisely resumed riding on level ground. Nicholas (age 7) was smarter than both of us and said so as he rode away muttering about only loco riders would try that stuff... :p

Now the problem is that I did actually ride the first log successsfully on the first try - it was only on the encore attempt that the bike and I went ungracefully in opposite directions. Soooo? Do I try again until Dad has to get carried out of the woods on a stretcher (Thanks Dave for keeping these things near the trailhead for ready ambulance access!) or listen to my wise old 7y.o. and stay firmly on the ground?

Ahh such imagination - or perhaps just wishful thinking?

No, I'm afraid we are very much still in the middle of the Atlantic coast - no North Shore here. The dimension in question refers strictly to horizontal distance. The vertical element in the new features is limited to 18-24" at best estimate. Still I can't ride an 18" log lengthwise without falling over regardless of height so.... it's all relative anyway...

There are some log rides that are perhaps 30-40' long -- so squint just right and pretend you are at some insanely dizzying height of your choice and we won't tell anyone else the truth when you embellish the stories of your accomplishments! :D

Just wondering which new log feature you're talking about on yellow? I'm thinking of one near the 4 way intersection on the long downhill. It's just before a sharp right hand turn as you're heading back toward the parking lot. There used to be bunch of barb wire just off to the right (as you're coming down the trail) that's been cleaned out. You ride up a short log that's propped up against the end of the larger diameter log (3'+, so you're pretty high up there) and drop off just before the trail doglegs to to the right and continues down the trail. I don't attempt this one alone unless there is someone else around to call the EMT's if I fall.

Or, are you refering to the log in the play area (as I like to call it) near the yellow and blue intersections with a jump build up on one side and a tree at one end that you can ride between? This area is much closer to the parking lot on the yellow.

Or, am I completely off and there is something new that fell over this past winter? Both areas I talking about above have been there for at least 2 seasons. I haven't been out yet since the trails reopened this weekend.

The new log feature is very new like in the last week new. It's very close to the parking lot. From the parking lot, turn right toward the yellow trail and it's at the first junction that you come to about 200 yards down the trail.
