Greetings -
Would someone be able to step up and lead tomorrow (2/14) evening's Wakefield Casual / Beginner ride? I will not be able to make it out due to a scheduling conflict. Sorry for the late notice - please post a reply, or email me if you can lead.
Thanks!

I don't know if Wakefield will be ready for riding tomorrow. We got ~7" in the Accotink area and they're predicting temps in the upper 40's on Tuesday. I'd expect it to be pretty sloppy. :(

Yeah, I was going to guess that as well; however, just to cover myself, I figured I would put out my request in the event that things were still frozen over enough to ride. I agree - I think that with the forecasted temperatures, and sun, it will be a slushy, muddy mess over there for at least a week or better.

Good morning -
The Wakefield casual ride scheduled for this evening, 2/14, is CANCELLED due to trail conditions. Go out to dinner with your other half, or stay in and watch cheesy, romantic comedies instead.
Thanks!

February 20th, 2006, 12:36 PM
I would say yes, unless there are reports from this evening's ride that trail conditions are bad. We haven't had any precipitation in a while, and the snow has since melted days ago here. I plan to lead the scheduled ride tomorrow.

No problem. If there is a cancellation due to trail conditions, it will most likely be posted tomorrow. However, I don't anticipate any cancellation.

I rode/ran wakefield this morning from about 7:00am until about 9am. The trails were perfectly frozen solid until about 8:45 when the sun started hitting them, then they were beginning to get squishy. If the temps are in the upper 40s and sunny (like it is calling for) they will be pretty messy.
The PhaseII trails look pretty damaged/trashed from muddy riding. Shame! :(

I did not go over to the bowl, or the stream trail for that matter, it was focused primarily on what would be (assuming) used for the Wednesday races.
The little section near the pedestrian bridge, down around the power station, into the armored area, around the base of the phase1 stuff, out into the powerlines for all of the phase2 stuff, back into the woods for the rest of phase1, then over along the edge of 495 up to where the start/finish is. Sorry I dont know the names of any of these places.
CRAIG2
February 21st, 2006, 01:30 PM
If those sections were greasy, I don't supsect the creek trail will be in great condition - the powerline sections and the section along the beltway are notoriously bad, and slow to dry. Was phase 1 also pretty slick, even at the higher elevations?

I've been to night rides twice now and both times I got hammered on the beltway in Virginia past tyson's corner. and been late both times. I take 270 S to 495 over the american legion bridge and around to the exit for wakefield park. Is there any short cuts or anyway to get there that may be faster?

I know that commute well, having worked in Germantown. That's 60-90 minutes in rush hour on a moderate day. The only alternative would be to come down the GW Parwkay to 395S possibly, but you'll get hammered there, too. Traffic around the area sucks. You're going to get hammered pretty much anywhere, unfortunately. Give yourself at LEAST an hour to get there from Gaithersburg, if not more.

CRAIG2
February 21st, 2006, 04:28 PM
I'm really teeting towards off - from what was said earlier, the trails still sound like they're pretty greasy from the thaw - it's certainly not below freezing today.
I'd like to be responsible and call it off, unfortunately.

I haven't been out to Wakefield since returning home so I can't personally help you make a decision -
BUT!!!
I just got off of the phone with Rich Edwards. Evidently he was out walking the trails on Friday. His exact words were:
"I'm a little disappointed." And he meant that in reference to the obvious tire ruts that indicate riders continue to use the trail even when it's wet.
L
And then he gave me a whole list of things to do to help get water off of the trail...
DOH!
((I always thought that when it was my time to die, that I would curl up off the trail at Fountain Head or in the abandoned car at Schaffer Farms. But now I know, I'm just gonna keel over at Wakefield...............))
CRAIG2
February 21st, 2006, 04:48 PM
Yeah, Phase II does NOT drain well. The switchbacks on Phase 1 haven't proven to be very resilient either. Still, people continue to ride these sections when conditions are prohibitive. I'm not sure if it's simple ignorance or what.
Tonight's ride is off. Please stay off the trails when temps are above freezing until the great thaw is over. Frozen dirt ok, melted dirt bad.

Larry,
I'm sure it's been suggested multiple times before, but can we put up a sign (or two or three) at Wakefield that says trails are closed or open for the day, just like at Fountainhead? I think the problem is that not everyone knows what trail conditions are marginal or acceptable. A sign would make it black and white.
Trail is open.
or
Trail is closed.
(If you still choose to ride, Larry will be on your ass like white on rice.)

I HEAR ya Rick.
As a matter of fact, I also spoke with Wakefield's Park Manager earlier today. He has no problem with putting up a Kiosk or a sign post at all of the trail heads to be used to indicate OPEN or CLOSED. However, what he won't sign up for (And he does not have the staff for) is the person or person's that will determine the trail conditions and then physically adjust the signs to indicate OPEN'ed or CLOSE'd.
He coined the term Trail Steward - And as much as I like Stewie, I don't think I'd want that job. I already make that call 6 times a year for the WAW and CM's. I also, more times than not, have to make that same call for the Thursday night ride. I couldn't fathom having to be responsible for the trail on a 7 day a week basis.
Any Volunteers?
(Think of the Power, the Glory, the ability to open and close Wakefield on your personal WHIM!!! Haaa ha ha haa.......)

I don't know how the signs are made. However, if it is a flip sign or an enclosed kiosk/bulletin board that you can padlock, give several appointed MORE members the combo. (Ride leaders and folks that live close by make the most sense.)
They can flip it up or down, then sign a little enclosed sheet like in the bathrooms that say "This Lavatory was last cleaned by _________ @ __________."

Trails were reportedly in good shape for yesterday, we haven't had any new precipitation in the past 24 hours, so we're on for tonight. It will be a casual pace; I have missed another 2 weeks of the bike, so don't hope for too blistering a pace :)

I can certainly see his POV. However, what about signs telling people to stay off in wet conditions, maybe with a little blurb explaining how messed up the trails get when people ride in the muck? It wouldn't keep the jerks away, but it may help with the merely clueless. Or am I being naive?

I don't know. To be honest any sign we've ever put up at Wakefield has been torn down, torn up and defecated upon. Frustrating actually. On the race permits we're required to have Race Date announcements put up a week in advance. Mike and I end up putting up new ones every day or every other day. The same thing with happens with Trail Maintenance and Trail Closures signs.
"Signs - Signs - Every where there's signs........"
I guess signs are a sign of "DA MAN". And nobody wants to be a pawn of - or told what to do by "DA MAN".
On the lighter side - The trails are in great condition. I went out onto Phase II today and put down a mixture of FINES and Virginia Clay onto to gravel we put down at the last Trail Maintenance. (I only did about half the distance - Those dang buckets were getting heavy and my lunch hours were long past over).
Let me know if you guys think this mixture is better than the straight gravel.

Craig
Oh it was definitely SKETCHY.
Two things happened.
ONE: We didn't dig the trenches as deep as I did on my test section. That gave us less room for the A21. Unfortunately with less A21, the rail road ballast started to surface (I HATE WHEN THAT HAPPENS)
TWO: I was counting on several days of rain to settle things in. As wet as things have been all winter, it never happened. Murphy laughs at me.
Hopefully I haven't made things worse. Thanks for the kinds words. The stuff I put down today was semi moist, but was drying fast in the wind. It really needs some rain to let it settle in. Maybe Friday.
Lastly, I have till the 1st of May to play. After that I want to have a system down on what works and what doesn't for the races.
Any way - I've hijacked the thread enough. Enjoy the ride tonight and be careful on the gravel!!

It may be a good idea to bring them if you want to finish the rides with the group. We usually are out until 8-8:15ish, depending how folks feel. You can always peel off if it gets too dark for you. It's not too big a park, so it's relatively easy to find your way back to the cars.

We're getting a few (and I do mean few, in the most literal sense) flurries here in Ballston - definitely not the 'winter storm' they were calling for yesterday. If you look really hard and long enough you can see a flake every now and then (quick - rush to the story to buy milk and toilet paper now!!!!). But it is really damn cold out there.
If the weather conditions remain the same as they are now, ride is on. Probably won't be out more than an hour and change. Us skinny people don't do well in the cold. No rain is forecasted; I doubt we'll get any today.
If something changes drastically in the next few hours, and the roads are in not so good shape, I'll bail. People around here on the roads scare me, and I'd rather not be out there any longer than necessary. But, as said, if the conditions remain the same, I don't expect ANY accumulation, especially on the road surfaces.

It went - for about 30 or 40 minutes... then it started raining. Only rode the creek trail, phase 1, and phase 2. Trails were in great shape, except for the rain, which at least kept the dust down but made the roots slick. Just two of us - myself, and Kathy, and we ran into Cory in the parking lot afterwards who had been in the bowl. No other users out there.
I'll be out again Thursday to lead the casual ride.

i suppose the monday ride aint happening, given the weather. how fast does wakefield dry up? will it be good to go by Tues night? i guess it depends on how much sky falls.
CRAIG2
April 3rd, 2006, 10:57 AM
That's pretty much about it. If the sky falls today, and we get significant rain (an inch is 'significant'), the ride tomorrow will be cancelled. The last I heard we are expecting strong thunderstorms today, with the rain potentially lasting into tomorrow morning. If that is the case, the ride will certainly not happen. Wakefield typically takes at least 2 days to really dry out into a rideable condition after significant precipitation - even with the new contour trails, it's not a fast draining network of trails (particularly along the creek trail and Phase 2).
Keep your fingers crossed, hopefully we don't get too much rain. If we do, come out Thursday!

Greetings folks -
It looks as if last night's big storm wasn't as epic as forecasted - the bark was far worse than the bite. We only picked up about a half inch of rain (also, not a drop fell here in Ballston yesterday prior to the aforementioned 'perfect storm'), and the conditions today are sunny and windy - we should get some good drying between now and this evening.
This evening's ride is ON - depending on who shows up, I would like to head over to Accotink first (it's daylight savings time now, so we'll have a good hour to ride over there before it begins to get dark) where things usually drain and dry more quickly, and then we might do a lap or so on the Wakefield side depending on how things look.
See you out there!

Sweet. I was hoping you'd say that. 6:30, right? Is there anywhere to grab a bite to eat near the park?
will these directions get me where i need to be?
"Wakefield park may be reached by taking Beltway Exit 54A which is Braddock Road west for one quarter mile to the park entrance on the right. For MORE rides, follow the entrance road until it ends at a left turn into a parking lot. This is the parking lot for the rec center. Rides leave from the large recycling bins in this lot."
CRAIG2
April 4th, 2006, 12:25 PM
6:30 is generally the time I get there, and am jus about ready to go. We usually linger around til about 6:40/45 to wait for any stragglers.
Regarding food before or after the ride, there's a shopping center that is essentially across the street from the park that will give you a couple of options, depending on what you're looking for. One is Kilroy's, a sports bar, there's a supermarket, and I'm not sure what else is in there. If you take Braddock Rd east, there's another shopping center at the intersection of Braddock and Backlick Road, about a mile or so from the park.
The directions to the park are good, and will get you right where you need to go. Take the beltway to the Braddock Road west exit, and make a right at the first light you get to on Braddock. The park is hard to miss - it's literally spitting distance from the beltway.

We'll see, and avoid the lower lying areas - like the creek trail, and phase 2. Higher up should be ok - we got less than an inch of rain, and today is sunny and windy. Accotink should be ok; roots might be a wee bit slick in spots.
Worst case, we get there, find everything is too muddy, and ride the CCT or something.

Since I can't get a trail report from ANYBODY, would it be safe for me to write and say there was no Wakefield Night Ride and that riders only went to Accotink and all riders had vacated Wakefield before night fall.
Just as a reminder, to continue the MORE sponsored night riding program in the only FCPA facility that allows night riding, we agreed to submit a report for each night there is a sanctioned ride. The lack of one report won't kill us but if a pattern develops we potentially could have the program restricted back to 2 days or less. This is why I agreed to be the point man for collection.

The casual / beginner ride tonight is ON. Turnouts have varied greatly - there really is no 'average'. I've seen as few as 2 or 3, and some rides have seen upwards of 12-15. Just depends.
Meet by the green recyclye bins at Wakefield, ready to ride at 6:45. Wakefield should be good and dry tonight, so if we get any newbies, we'll stick to the Wakefield side where the terrain is not as challenging.

Wakefield is legal for night riding on Monday's, Tuesday's and Thursday's. You do NOT have to ride with any of the MORE group rides.
A Wakefield ride does NOT include Accotink. If you cross Braddock road (Under or Over) and your using your lights - Your POACHING.
From the Night riding Policy, "Night riding at Wakefield Park will continue as an approved activity on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday Nights from dusk until 10:30PM. All participant's cars must be off park property by 11 PM. "
Hope this helps

The trails look great. I can tell that you've done a lot with the powerline section at the beginning of phase 2. We've talked about that area a lot. It is in really good shape and rides very nicely. It should probably get mowed before the races start would be my only comment. I like the two logs on the section against the beltway towards the end of the lap. They're easy, but add a little texture to that part of the course.

I'm not sure how much bloodshed occurred last week, but last night's carnage was minimal. I had a little incident with a log bridge. The log bridge won. Thank you all for hanging out for a couple minutes while I collected myself. The evidence of the encounter has been doused in peroxide and slathered with bacitracin, so I'm good as new. Actually my palm is more bruised and sore than anything else. I take that back, the tiny little bit of confidence I was building on previous log bridges is pretty bruised.

Falls like that are what we sometimes need to go to the next level. I had a huge and rather stupid fall Monday night. While I'm going to be hobbling around for a week or two, I can't wait to get back to that spot and try it again. :D

If so- glad to see you are legal. Last year I worked w/ Anne M. of the BikeLane and built some Log-Clinic obstacle training aids. Per the incident- if the same one, I'm thinking I'll police those up and host another comprehenisve log conquereing clinic- all purty easy details, just a bit of know how, mastering some drills and application...may happen late June and/or early july- I'll post on this forum...

I don't anticipate being able to ride anything at Wakefield tonight; however, I'm hoping we'll have some legal trail on the Accotink side.
At any rate - that said, ride is still on pending further notice. Please check back in later today in case something changes.

I'd vote for buying a light versus a bike - you'll probably want one by about 7:40/45 when it really begins to get dark back on the trails due to the tree cover.
For all: please begin bringing a light from now on - the sun is setting earlier now, and it will be dark enough before the ride is over to warrant bringing one. Those who don't have a light may opt to return to the parking lot early, though.

I am debating on buying a new bike at lunch time.. heh... Either way, I will be there. I dont have a light, hopefully we wont need one.
Oh, shoot, lunchtime is over now that I see your post. I hope you bought a light. Bikes require thought, planning, spreadsheets, calculations. And MONEY. You don't go out and buy a bike over lunch. Actually, you don't do that for a light either, but if it's a choice, you pick the light.
See ya tonight.
And bac, I've got words for you...... but right now I've got work. I'll be responding to you later. With words or SOMETHING!

I was planning/hoping to ride tonight. But I'm also a beginner - and don't want to hold the group up if it's going to be a more difficult trail or faster paced ride. I've ridden at Schaeffer - but this would be my first time at Wakefield/Accotink and also first night ride - although I do have a lamp :)

Greetings all -
The ride scheduled for this evening is still ON. As always, all are welcome to join, even beginners! After all, this is the casual ride.
I'm gambling on the rain missing us, or being short-lived if we do get anything. If for some reason it is raining steadily at 6 or so, then we'll cancel. Just mind the Doppler, and excercise a little common sense.
Also, please bring a light. You'll need it these days, particulary if you plan to be out much past 7:30 and we usually ride until about 8:15/30 or so.
Drop me an email or post a reply to this thread if you still have any questions. We may or may not venture over to Accotink depending on who shows up. The trails there are more intermediate in nature IMHO, and this is a beginner-friendly ride.

I think I'm gonna miss tonight because of the drive and my work schedule and all. :(. But Dharma, you've got to get different pedals. Even if you don't borrow my Candy Cs, you need pedals you can get in and out of with ease.
If Craig gives you a hard time about being a beginner, he's just doing that so you will beat him up. He likes that in a woman. Arrrrrrrrrrrrrr! :D

I agree! I'm going to give the SPDs a couple more chances, loosen the tension up completely and see how it goes. It has, afterall, only been 2 rides. But if no signs of improvement - then yes, I'm definitely not opposed to ditching those suckers and trying something else out!!!

Resisting the urge to make an incredibly tacky and inappropriate 'hard time' comeback right now... ye saucy wench! Arrrrrr!Allrighty, I'll ask since it seems to be a juicy topic of discussion pre- and apres-ride in the parking lots: are you two dating?
I figured with all the veiled sexual tension and electricity between you two, the rumors may be true. It's cool, and it kinda reminds me of those old Folgers romantic soap-operatic commercials where the guy borrows some coffee and looks longingly at the gal (and vice versa) but they are trapped in their own worlds of societal rules and norms yet there's a yearning in their loins...or those Shedds Spread commercials where the two pairs of hands have been slapping each other for years, then a baby mysteriously shows up (I wonder if the margarine had anything to do with it)?
If I am unintentionally outing you two, just deny it and we can all get on with our lives. But remember, the more you deny it, the truer it is... :p

Its not quite that far, it takes me about 20 min to get from le'fant plaza where I work to wakefield on an avg day, 40 on a bad day, and only an hour from bowie MD driving right through the city (on a good day) As for the crappy light setup, I have the same issue, std handlebar mount, make for blind cornering much more fun :) If you can get a helmet mounted light, go for it.
I will be there with new bike tonight and tuesday weather permitting, its alot heavier, so I will go it alone tonight to not keep the riders back while I struggle away and not dieing :)

Hey Justin, We're all just overgrown young uns ourselves. We tend to be of the not-shy variety. But that's OK. We're loveable (or we like to think we are). We like new people. We're fun. We're stupid. We're welcoming.
Actually, some of the folks are shy. It's just those of us who aren't shy are so NOT shy that we completely make up for the shyness of the others. We *try* to not offend people. I can't say we always succeed, but we *try* to be respectful of people who have less childish senses of humor.
If you want to be nervous, you can save that for riding with the moderate paced folks. There's no reason in the world to be nervous with casual riders.
You can sort of get by with a crappy light, but it'll probably encourage you to save your pennies to buy a better one.
The drive is the only reason for you to not come to WF. I complain about my 25 miles. But then I've done it so many times it's become a major serious drag.
Welcome!

Though truth be told, on most rides we're as far apart as can be. He's at the front and I'm at the back. Which is a shame since the most fun part of Tuesday nights is trading lewd comments with Craig.
