Sorry for posting so late.

Is the ride on for tonight (Monday, 2/20/06)?

Am I the only one that had to work today?
Hello? Hello? Hello?

Ugh.

EDIT five minutes later:
Just spoke to Joe Pergano (sp?), he was there this morning and he said that it was getting sloppy, thus, he is cancelling tonight's ride. No ride for you!

Just to clarify. I rode Wakefield and Accotink this morning before the big thaw. Trails were absolutely fantastic until about 9:30 when they started to get soft. That's when I headed home via the roads.

Note: phase II is a big mess. We need to get the word out about not riding in mud.

How many people showed up?

The ride last night was short and sweet. Only two of us. We rode the bowl and the north and south stream valley trails, and the little section by the tennis courts. Tried to ride phase 1 but found it to be too muddy so we headed back to the cars after less than an hour of riding. Saw no one else on the trails.

It should be a good ride tonight if the rain holds off. I was there yesterday and it was nice. Unfortunately I injured my knee on the Gambrill-like terrain of Accotink so I am not riding tonight. Can someone lead whilst I rest for a few days?

I ran over Mike Miller when I was going out for my pre-ride. He was heading out just as I got there. I don't blame him. Most people run when I hit the scene. ;)

I didn't ride alone though. Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny and Elvis go with me everywhere I ride. Elvis likes to chase the deer. :D

Why did the Monday night ride drop off the calendar? Did someone remove it by accident? If you remove a reocurring ride in an attempt to cancel and individual ride it cancels the whole series or rides..

I've got one in my bag and will be there a little early. I'm going to pre-ride Accotink and the bowl tonight. When would you be arriving? I can just arrange to be back by then and you can use it.

Do you have one of the wider single speed chains? If so, I'll bring my bigger chian tool which seems to work better on the heavier duty chains.

Pete
I learned early on in my association with MORE that the definitions used to describe a ride's pace are somewhat ... understated. :D

"Moderate" = fast (to me)
"Casual" = moderate (to me)
"Easy/Pokey/Slow/Bring Yer Grandma" = casual (to me)

The scary part is when you see some of those folks on the "moderate" ride and it's clear they really do consider it a moderate pace!

joep
March 20th, 2006, 12:52 PM
My pacing policy has always been 1) try to ride a bit faster than the person hanging on my wheel, and 2) regroup at intersections. So the "pace" really depends on who shows up. In the end, it sort of "averages" to a moderate pace. ;)

BTW, I try my best not to lose anyone. We will always stop to regroup at the intersections.

Pete (er, Dirt), I'll be there around 6:15. Thanks!

Cool! I'll be back by then. What kind of chain is it? Do I need to bring the big honkin' chain tool for a BMX style chain or is it an 8 or 9 speed chain. I can use the 8/9 speed tool an a BMX style chain, but it is much easier with the park tool.

See you tonight.

yeah, but your cadence musta been through the roof.

I learned early on in my association with MORE that the definitions used to describe a ride's pace are somewhat ... understated.

the only caveat i'd add about pace is that for a singlespeeder, it's all about momemtum which can sorta up the pace since there's now option to switch the chainring to granny during the ride. i think because of this, the definition of pace may be skewed.. or just that ricky and joep have monster quads...

Hi Larry,

I don't know if it would help elicit responses, but would you or someone else be willing to post up a reminder about what the Trail Monitor reports are, why we do them, and how they help?

I think I have a decent idea of how MORE came to do TM reports and the history behind them, but I have no idea what they're really supposed to accomplish in the long term, how long the program is to be in place (please tell us it's not permanent! Please?!?), how they benefit MORE as well as the Park Authority, etc. and so on, and I suspect I'm not the only one.

Thanks!

They are permanent and it was the trail reports that MORE agreed to do in return for 3 nights a week night riding. If we stop doing the reports the County could close down night riding for good. It seems like a pain but in the long run it allows us 3 nights a week of legal night riding that does not have to be pre-scheduled like in Maryland or many other jurisdictions throughout the country.

Thanks, but I was thinking more along the lines of what the Trail Reports are for, why does the County want them, how are they used, etc. In other words, what is the broader point of Trail Reports; what broader good do they serve other than being the chore we have to do to keep access?

The park uses the data to manage the user experience. Reports give an indication of number of users and any problems encountered during the evening. If you have a ride that has no issues the report should take all of 1 minute to send. I have a template that I use that puts in the number of riders in my group and number of riders and hikers seen on the trail. Any weather or trail issues and then I send it out.

The ride's on for tonight. But, attendance has been pretty lacking lately even in good weather. So a few questions:

1) Is Monday generally a bad night for people?
2) Do people have a problem with the pace, route, or time? (or is my creaky bike just driving you nuts?)
3) Does lycra make my butt look fat?
4) Is the DaVinci Code movie as good as the book?

I really want to know. PM or post here; the suggestion box is always open.

Thanks!

P.S. I fixed my creaky bike, so y'all can't use that one anymore.
P.P.S. Larry, the TM report has been sent... thanks for following up on me.

You bailed early. I bailed late. Hahahaha. You missed a beautiful crash on my part. My rear brake faded badly early in the ride. I later found out that Avid had problems with bad brake pads for a while and I've probably got a set. Without a rear brake, I found it difficult, if not impossible to stop and hop up a rather nasty section. I went over rather gracelessly. The helmet did its job. Unfortunately I wasn't wearing a helmet on my right thigh. I'm pretty lame this morning. Just what I need before big bear. :D Oh well. It wouldn't be me if I wasn't a little gimpy.

Poo. I was hoping that it stopped raining at Wakefield and Accotink even though it was raining everywhere else. I love being delusional.

See you next week.

I won't be able to lead the ride tonight so I'm cancelling it unless someone else can lead. See you next week.

The Monday ride led by me will now happen at Fountainhead instead of Wakefield. It will go back to Wakefield whenever daylight won't allow us to ride at Fhead.

[edit: and no, I'm not doing this just to get away from writing Trail Monitor reports for OtherBrotherL]

The official ride description in the calendar reads:

Join the Bike Lane and MORE for a dusky ride around Fountainhead (while daylight allows).

Pace: moderate to slightly faster (lap times a bit less than 1 hour), but no one who shows up will be dropped, except maybe the ride leader.

Terrain: Intermediate. Short ups and downs. Small rock gardens.

Meet by the trailhead at 6:45pm, ready to ride by 7:00pm.

Chris-

I'm heading out soon. If anyone's coming, I'll see you there at 6:45.

The Fhead ride tonight is on! See you there at 6:45. Lots of mosquitos and biting flies when I was there last night. Bring the Off.

Man - I blink and the Monday Night Wakefield Ride Leader moves AND takes his ride to Fountain Head.

HEAVY SIGH!!!

Any Way - My ride schedule for this week just got all messed up. I normally do a road ride on Tuesday's but a prior family commitment has forced me to switch to a Monday evening ride.

Since we need a Trail Monitor at Wakefield for tonight I've decided to ride my MTB from there. I know this is super last minute, but just in case folks are interested.

Wakefield Monday Evening ride: 6:30PM till 8:00 PM

This will probably be one of the last rides before we will actually need lights.

Fall is almost here and the days are getting shorter. The ride start time for 8/28 will be moved up to 6PM to give us enough time to ride.

See youz.

Does the Monday night ride still happen at Fountainhead? How about for Labor Day tomorrow?
Thanks

Sorry I missed your post. Last Monday's Fhead ride (Labor Day) was cancelled due to rain and my tired legs. Today's ride (9/11) is on. Note the earlier start time (6PM). Sunset is at 7:15pm. Depending on how it goes, we may try for a shorter loop in order to get out before it gets dark. And it does get really dark, really quickly at Fhead. Hope to see you there.

Starting next week (9/18) this ride will take place at Wakefield at 6:30pm. With the sunset creeping back on us, there won't be enough time to finish a full Fhead lap before dark.

It looks like we might get some rain today. If that is the case, the ride will be cancelled. I'll keep an eye on conditions and post another update later, around 3:30pm. Anyone planning on showing up?

I will try and show up tonight if it is still on. is 6:45 the start time? I'll have an ugly yellow (Replacement frame) fisher 29er and I'll have a woodbridgeadventure racers logo on the back of my Jeep.

The weather looks good for tonight's ride. I hope some of you can make it. For potential first timers who don't know what I look like: I'm the out-of-place looking, pale, skinny guy that's not Craig. I'll be wearing a MORE jersey, but I also have a mean surgical scar below my navel in the even that I'm shirtless. ewwww.

See you there.

I don't think there's a regular casual group on the Monday nights. Anyone????

It's usually a moderate-paced ride, but "beginners" wanting to try something a little bit faster than the Tuesday rides are welcome. Unlike the Thursday Jacka$$ rides (http://www.more-mtb.org/forum/showpost.php?p=41334&postcount=273) , this one really does have a no-drop policy. :)

Ok, ok you outed me! :)

But this is a good opportunity to do some 'splainin' on how I lead a Monday ride, or at least how I interpret a no-drop policy:

1) I'll go at a pace that will be a bit slow for the fastest rider, but a bit fast for the slowest rider.

2) The group (if there is one) will inevitably get spread out.

3) Everyone waits at the next intersection to regroup, chat, scratch, pee, whatever.

4) Back to step 1).

So, if there's a huge spread in riding speeds, people in the front wind up getting bored and people in the back get lonely, and everybody winds up hating the ride leader. It works like a charm!

Okay, got it! Thanks SG and Joe. I think I'll give the Tuesday ride a few more tries before I step it up. I had intitally asked because I wasn't sure I could make the ride tomorrow, but my climbing plans have changed - so i'll be able to go tomorrow after all!

Sorry for being the newbie asking stupid questions :o

DHARMA! :p :p :p

If you haven't learned ANYTHING yet, haven't you learned to find out ahead of time!!!! :D ;) :p

Look, JoeP is fast. JoeP is REALLY fast. He may slow down a little for someone who wants to try out the moderate rides. And that's fine. But for someone who doesn't know that they can be at the front of all casual rides, they shouldn't be thinking too hard on moving up to the moderate rides.

I will never be able to keep up with him. It doesn't mean I'm a bad person. It just means that I'm not as fast as him. And I'm not going to slow him down by making the mistake of going on one of his rides. I've been on an official casual ride where the leader declared in the parking lot, "We're riding moderate" and was left in the dust of the other riders. No fun. Fortunately I could find my way on the trail system solo or there might have been trouble. So when a ride is officially stated "moderate," people who go on it, need to know what that means.
